Stept NO HELMET!?

Recently saw Mutiny and it was unreal. THEY. GO. BIG. And I didn't really think about it until afterwards. WHY THE HELL DON'T THEY WEAR HELMETS!? We all know the consequences for taking that big of a risk. What is the logic behind this? Is there any?

We all want to see you guys throw down, but no one wants to see another head injury.
Throw on a dome bucket. Please.

It's a cultural thing. I'm glad there are still many pro skiers (unlike snowboarders or especially skateboarders) with helmets in urban, so that a kid who wants to take it to the streets doesn't have to feel like an idiot for wearing one.

Do you realise the implications of your logic? It means that anyone, doing anything that anyone watches will have to watch everything they do, in order to not "inspire" any "wrong" decisions on the viewers part. It is both stupid, illogical and impossible to implement or expect.

You simply cannot deny the fact that this is about free choice, no matter how passionate you are about kids wearing helmets. Fact of the matter is that it is the kids PARENTS, not their rolemodels, that are in charge of the kids wearing a helmet. Simple as that.

I can understand the showmanship aspect of it for legit movie making athletes, as many entertainers such as trapeze artists or what have you don't wear them as part of the show to add a sense of danger. It's a natural thrill adder, however for the average kid out doing urban for fuck's sake nobody cares how cool you are just wear one.

I said "the actions of others." The only thing you can truly control are your own actions, whether influenced by others or not. People, young or old, are going to do what they want no matter the amount of internet forum safety monitor grandstanding. Should everyone who skis be wearing a helmet? Fuck yes they should be but people do not have the right to tell anyone else that they need to wear one.

If young people are all about the "look" a warning message at the beginning of a movie is going to do jack shit. Based on this wouldn't the best solution be to ban all ski movies that don't have helmets? All in the name of safety right...

Wrong. Its up to parents bud. My parents made me ski with a helmet. Its not up to me or Stept to make sure kids ski with helmets its the parents. Haha really by your reasoning no one should ski, drive in cars or do anything for that matter b/c you might die. Hell what About b/c skiing? People die doing that way more often then skiing park with no helmet. So TGR is killing children by your logic.

Personally when I ski I wear a helmet 80% of the time, when I ride BMX its about 50/50 and when I MTB its 100% of the time.

I don't hold judgement if people do/don't wear one, but I don't really like it when people judge other for wearing/not wearing. Especially for wearing, when I ride my BMX I don't wanna feel like I'm being judged for wearing a lid, that pisses me off.

Other then that whatever floats your boat...

right. because a parent is right next to their kid the entire time they're hitting urban and is there to tell them "make sure you keep your helmet on!" before each hit.

Leaving it entirely up to parents is dumb. It should be the role models who will make a kid think 'oh, maybe it's a good idea to wear a helmet'. not having the whole parent's are the bad guy for making me wear a helmet even though all my favourite pros don't wear one.

It should be the person themselves who realizes that wearing a helmet is a good idea.

Helmets are a false sense of security just like seatbelts. People hype the accidents when someone isn't using one. If you need a false sense of security to do cool things don't judge the people with balls who don't.

Way to take simple logic and twist into some ugly beast.

This is a difference between using a seat belt or not using a seat belt. Not the difference between driving or not driving.

Let's use back country skiing then. If there was a ski movie where everyone was in the BC without any avy gear at all (assuming it was obvious to tell) and this group of people was the inspiration of a whole generation of skiing, would you support them in not wearing a beacon or carrying a shovel? Or would you call them out saying 'well maybe you should at least advertise the risks involved by not bringing this safety equipment so you're not setting an example for the next wave of BC skiers to not use avy gear.'.

That's it! We need MORE DATA so we can issue a decree that if you want to ski you MUST wear a helmet. Why stop there.... We could compile data about age, race, sex of skiers and what causes accidents. Then we could really ensure safety for all

Idk why this is such a big problem. Its just all comes down to the new era of "health and safety" that we all seem to be stuck in.

Helmets weren't mandatory in the Tour de France until 1996. These guys were doing similar speeds to skiers but on concrete/asphalt, not snow. It was just kinda the done thing.

Idk why everyone is so butthurt about whether the stept guys wear helmets or not. I guess its just another one of their ways of saying fuck the system, haha.

i lost my good friend will schooler because he hit his head on an urban rail without a helmet on.

ever since then i wear a helmet. one awkward bail where you hit your head can kill you, doesn't matter if you're a pro.

is it really worth it to risk your life to look cool without a helmet on burly ass features for a 3 minute part in a movie? personally, I don't think so, but thats just me. at the end of the day you gotta realize that you have your entire life ahead of you, and a quick bonk on the head can change that very quickly.

i'm not going to preach on people to wear helmets, but i've seen the worst thing that can happen if you don't wear one. you aren't as invincible as you may think.

ITS UP TO PARENTS TO MAKE SURE KIDS HAVE HELMETS.

"mom do i really need to have a helmet?". "Yes son you could get hurt awen you get older it up to you".

None of that included me, stept, or any ski movie. Just parents do what they should be doing.

This is well said. I get what you're saying Andy and I agree parents should enforce helmets, but peer influence plays a huge role in actions kids take on the hill and in an urban setting. Its not black and white.

Helmets were not mandatory in the Tour until 1995. A crash by Italian pro Fabio Casartelli on July 18, 1995, changed all that. The Olympic gold medalist lost control on a descent in thePyrenee Mountains and died of head injuries. At first, Tour officials said a helmet would not have helped Casartelli. But the doctor who examined the cyclist's body said otherwise..The Tour finally saw a fatality directly related to their relaxed views on helmets. They took very little time to change the rule making helmets mandatory. This was the first head injury to a cyclist in the tour and it changed everyones views.

Also, even though the cyclists are going very fast(faster then skies in many cases) They are not dropping cliffs, jumping off buildings, or grinding rails. Concrete isnt any softer than a metal rail, brick wall, or and other structure that these skiers hit.

while i agree that there shouldn't be a rule, and its nobody's business, i would hate to see skiing go the route that skateboarding has, where you literally can't get respect and recognition skating street with a helmet. its the stupidest and most destructive thing in skateboarding. so for those smart enough to wear a helmet, at whatever level, wear it with pride.

Yes, I'm a douche because I love having the least amount of gear on while doing something I love. It's not like I don't enjoy stomping shit with a helmet either, it's just that I love the feeling of flowing through the air with just sunglasses and feeling the elements (helmets make me feel confined). I feel as if extra gear makes the sport less fun for me (helmets, spine pads, etc.). I don't hate on people that don't wear pads, so stop hating on those that don't. Most of us are adults here and can make our own decisions. Stop trying to force helmets on people!

How many of you, preaching about how everyone should wear helmets, binge drink? I have lost two close friends over the past few years from drinking (one of poisoning, the other from liver failure). Does that mean I'm going to go telling people off for drinking? Hell no, people understand the consequences of their actions. That goes for helmets too. Shout out to stept, who are definitely reading this thread laughing.

Urban skiing clearly isn't dangerous because none of the biggest urban names have had a career ending, life threatening, or life ending head injury.

If one of the big names has a tragic head injury then we'll know that urban skiing is dangerous but it's obviously not. Then we'll lead a campaign to teach everyone that urban is dangerous.

When I watch the stept movies I honestly think every single one of those kids are fucking idiots just because they don't wear a helmet. But hey they are free to do whatever they want, idc not my head...

Athletes don't have to be a role models, stop making the argument they need to set an example. Who the fuck looks at like shea or clayton as damn role models? If you do chances are you have bigger problems than just not wearing a helmet when you ski.

stept gets the most hyphy shots and it makes ppl mad that they keep it casual in a tshirt and stunnas instead of a redbull helmet.

redbull helmet is an exaggeration but sometimes they choose a brain bucket, sometimes they might choose a mouthguard like kieran, sometimes/ pretty much always now they getting turnt up in the streets without very much/ any protective gear

and they're going fast as fuck.


theres no denying that it makes the shots look that much more burly. with a helmet, ppl watch the shot and might notice that the rider took initiative to keep himself safe in case of adverse circumstances. stept is going the fuck in and keeping the shots as raw as possible so you kids can cringe


the dub at 3:00 is an example of the freedom associated with not wearing plastic on your head. skiing can involve goggles, neckwarmers, helmets, expensive ski jackets or can be kept as simple as possible by skiing naked.

Wearing a helmet is a good idea, period.  It is a good idea in the same way that wearing a seat belt is wise.

If someone does not want to wear one, that is their choice. 

I do hope people wear helmets because I have concern for folks I don't know, even though I have never met them.

If you don't want to wear one I can't force you to do so.  I really hope you don't learn the hard way.

The way I see it is it has it's places. Like you'd wear a beacon in the BC, you should wear a helmet hitting gnarly urban. Obviously it's the persons choice, but when they're setting an example for others, then they should be highly encouraged to wear one in the proper situations or at least recommend wearing one in those situations.

this is not a valid comparison. Wearing/not wearing a beacon has immediate implications far beyond the individual wearing it. You wear it just as much for the safety of your friend next to you as you do for your own. Wearing/not wearing a helmet does not carry the same implications.
