Stept NO HELMET!?

Recently saw Mutiny and it was unreal. THEY. GO. BIG. And I didn't really think about it until afterwards. WHY THE HELL DON'T THEY WEAR HELMETS!? We all know the consequences for taking that big of a risk. What is the logic behind this? Is there any?

We all want to see you guys throw down, but no one wants to see another head injury.
Throw on a dome bucket. Please.

Wearing a helmet definitely prevented some pretty serious head injuries for me 2 seasons ago. I love watching the Stept movies but the lack of helmets make me uncomfortable as I watch.

Don't be a pawn in the safety marketing campaign. They are making money off of your fears. There is a place for helmets, but it sure as fuck isn't green and blue trails and small terrain parks....if that's the case you should be wearing your helmet going to and from the mtn, because that's where you will get a brain injury.

Messaged Martini (he's online right now), hope he'll respond. So far, not a single valid reason for no helmet in my opinion. I don't skate with a helmet, but I ski with one, because they are insulative, look good, and have saved my life more than once.

Also, I wonder if there's some kind of pressure to not wear one from the inside? You would think that 1 out of 10+ dudes in their movies would wear one, if there wasn't some incentive not to.

Or, acknowledge the fact that these people's lives are at stake, and their risk of death is unnecessarily increased a hell of a lot from not wearing a helmet, and while they do not need to be role models to anyone, any one of their deaths would be a huge blow to the ski industry. Imagine your favorite skier dying from a head injury that could have easily just been a concussion.

I think people need to wake up about this and stop defending it using the "don't tell other people what to do" shit. Of course they do not need to wear a helmet, but the fact that they don't is completely pointles, and affects the entire community of freeskiers. What's the point?

I think you're missing the point of who the Stept crew really is. There wouldn't be that much blowback on a scale of what you're saying. Little Jimmy and his daddy aren't concerned with this type of skiing. They aren't taking any cues from it. And honestly if you're that worried about the role model thing, then your kid or whoever's kid shouldn't be watching a Stept film. There are plenty of other ski films more suitable to a younger or impressionable age group.

Personally, I wear a helmet. If that affects how you read my comments at all.

I think people need to wake up about this and need to stop trying to tell other people what to do in situations that the people complaining (a.k.a. this pussy-bitch I'm quoting) will NEVER experience. Hey it may be pointless to you but when you're faced with a feature that is borderline life or death, you go about it the most comfortable way possible and for some people (underage children and pussies, look away now) that means wearing the same shit they wear skiing NORMALLY.

They're people going out and pushing themselves and freeskiing in the best way they know how. If you're scared of your idols dying, you picked the wrong fucking sport, you stupid piece of shit.

P.S. to all those children complaining that their kids that they might have 20 years down the road will be poorly influenced by people who don't wear helmets, BE A FUCKING PARENT AND MAKE YOUR KID WEAR ONE, YOU STUPID FUCKS. That's some free parenting advice to those that may be too retarded to figure out how to have kids in the first place.

Skiierman's right, who gives a fuck. Some people wear one, some don't. Some people smoke cigs, some don't. We all die one day, and at least for the stept guys they'll be doing what they love, ha. Stop being such parents and just enjoy the skiing.

Everyone SHUT THE FUCK UP. They are grown ass men who will do whatever THE FUCK they want. You are not a parent, a friend or even a shit they took this morning for that matter, your opinion has no effect on what they do. Also to the person who posted a Bob Burnquist video you missed the point Mcleod was even trying to make he meant street skateboarders. Not one of them even wears a helmet in street league where more little kids see them than anywhere else. And to whoever said "they're not skateboarding down mountains" look at whats on the ground on a mountain dipshit. SNOW. Whats on the ground all over the city. Cement. There is just as much if not more risk in skateboarding. so with that I conclude my rant with I hope all of you fucks bitching get hit by a car since you're too busy worrying about what OTHER PEOPLE ARE DOING.

I would also like to point out that the Stept crew is well aware of the risk they are taking. They are no strangers to head injuries and know what they are risking (better than anyone in this thread.) Stop treating them like children.

I ski just as hard as the next guy, but but I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy to be watching through a lens as I die trying to get a shot, because I'm not wearing a helmet. Give me a valid reason and I'll reconsider.

B. Click the link in my signature before you call me a pussy, I AM out trying shit that pushes my limits, and I DO tricks that are of a caliber that could cause me death if I landed wrong (especially without a helmet).

C. I didn't tell anybody to do anything. They can do whatever the fuck they want. Shit, I'll still buy their movies too. I think that the industry needs to move to be pro-helmet, and stept is a large deterrent of that. I don't think that telling someone to buckle up is going to fix it though. I just hope that nobody in stept dies from doing this, because the pain that it would bring upon this community would really blow, don't ya think? And honestly, will somebody give me one valid reason for them not to wear a helmet? This isn't a rhetorical question, I just can't think of a single reason. So why do it?

I don't have any control over people I film, you honestly think if I told someone to wear a helmet they would listen? I wear a helmet when I ski park, I've had some hard falls in my past. If someone doesn't want to wear a helmet that's their choice, not ours. Again, shut up dad.

Yes, you didn't say "wear a helmet" but you made many very suggestive remarks like "how can you support someone not wearing a helmet". You're acting like we should take other peoples business into our own hands. How fucking old are you? If you're a day over 16 then you need to realize the world keeps revolves without you intervening. By the way, your reason was suuuuper sensible and a great defense for not wearing a helmet, I can't possible think of why It might be dumb...you know...aside from the fact that there's no reason not to wear a helmet when they are skiing 'normally', thus getting comfortable with it. It's a fucking helmet dude, it's warm, comfortable, and holds your goggles in place...and saves ya brain.

And can I just bask a bit longer in the irony of skiierman calling me a pussy? It's such a warm, calm feeling. Like two heel clicks. There's no place like ns.

I also made some very blatant and concrete remarks, like "Of course they do not need to wear a helmet"...You don't have to read into what I'm saying when I'm saying it clearly.

I'm an adult, and I'm not trying to intervene, just question. If you think I'm going to come running into a fucking shoot and yell at clayton villa to put a helmet on, you are a little bit too wrapped up in this.

If you are actually going to use the whole "world will still revolve" bullshit, you cannot honestly say "worry about yourself". Like yeah, fuck what everyone else in the world is doing, I'm just gonna look out for number one and ignore all of my surroundings. other people can do what they want, it's not my place to disagree and say so.

was wearing a helmet. Cr was wearing a helmet. Does that mean people shouldnt wear helmets? No. But thats a pretty bold thing just to come in and say as a response.

Yes, helmets save lives but you can still get brain injuries with a helmet on. Basically, a helmet keeps you from cracking your skull open and from small bonks, etc. You can still get concussions, very minor to very severe with a helmet on.

I'd prefer that the skiers pushing urban so far today, influencing kids who look up to their skiing heroes, wear helmets. Younger skiers are more likely to copy the skiers who they look up to and if that results in them not wearing helmets then we have a problem.

Here's a few reasons I feel it's alright for me to weigh in on this thread:

1) Danny Toumarkine is my roommate
2) I didn't wear a helmet until last year
3) I've known some of the Stept guys going on ten years
4) My good friend Sally Francklyn is alive today because she was wearing a helmet
5) I'm an avid support of High Fives Non-Profit, which is launching an helmet campaign this fall with POC


So now that those credentials are out of the way...

You should wear a helmet. You should also eat healthy, exercise, not smoke or drink, and take care of yourself. No one is perfect, and we all deviate from the things we're supposed to do in favor of freedom of choice. I support this argument.

I also think helmet awareness is key. Actually, that's not an argument. That's a fact. People should wear helmets because they protect your head. Simple as that. The mountain, especially in the park, is a place of unpredictability. I wear a helmet 98% of the time when I'm skiing not because I'm worried about me, I'm worried about the other person that might make a mistake that has shitty consequences for my head.

My friend and fellow journalist Sally Francklyn had an accident she didn't see coming in Jackson Hole. Her choice to wear a helmet saved her life. Danny wasn't wearing a helmet and if he was, he might've walked away with only a serious concussion instead of a traumatic brain injury that changed his life. I believe in learning vicariously through others, i.e., I don't need to try heroin to know it's bad for me, because I've watched what it does to close friends.

In short, I'm not going to call up Clayton Vila or Sean Jordan and say, "hey guys, as your friend, I think you should wear a helmet" in the same way they're not going to call up me and say, "Hey Rogge, I think you shouldn't smoke cigarettes when you're at the bar at night." I support what Stept puts out there and I think they're fully aware of the consequences, which is what makes them the absolute best at what they do. All that aside, don't kid yourselves. Wearing a helmet is fucking smart.

You're talking about a movie that solely consists of people trespassing, breaking and entering, damaging personal and private property, doing drugs, having confrontations with people, jumping off of buildings, and sliding rails over concrete steps.....this isn't fucking football! This isn't even a contest setting.

It isn't stept's responsibility to endorse wearing helmets....it just isn't, fuck your trends! No one is saying that Michael Vick HAS to slide as he's an influence on HS QB's and that if he doesn't it's on him to carry their injuries on his conscience.

"We are highly influenceable people"....no, WE aren't. Maybe you are. And if we ARE influenced in superficial aesthetic trends that let us feel a sense of belonging to a ski subculture, fine. However, anyone who is making decisions about their personal safety based on the actions of strangers operating at a different stratosphere of the sport is plain fucking dumb.

There is no reasonable argument that makes it ok for people like you to control the behavior of others. Take personal responsibility for your own choices and actions. The only reason this is even a discussion is because culturally it's become so fucking acceptable to blame others for our own decisions. There's such a reflexive, knee jerk tendency to look to hold others accountable for the consequences we suffer at our own hands and it's bullshit.

How about this: If you're young and enough and immature enough to try and emulate stept down to the details, you have zero business hitting urban. Stay in a safe, controlled environment, practice ballerina spins on flat rails, and wait to sue Vail resorts after a concussion you get despite wearing a helmet.

Anyone that feels really strongly about helmets should take it in their own hands to push helmets. Go kill it at your local park with a helmet on it. Talk to young kids on the lift about how a helmet saved your life. Share your personal experiences and talk about why you choose to wear one.

But, for fuck's sake, leave other people out of it.

Right on point here! There is a multi billion $$$$ lawsuits brewing in the NFL! Our medical research is learning how delicate our heads are! It would be a shame to see a trickle down scenario happen in the ski world too! When the research and medical knowledge is there!

after watching it again i realized 2 things.

1. The whole vibe of the movie was dark and about how crazy and nuts everything was (ie. the old guy talking) this long ass debate is probably exactly what they wanted. Controversy sells

2. They do it because they are young and full of piss and vinegar.

But in all seriousness, it's a personal choice whether someone wears a helmet or not. Simple as that. I actually bought a helmet two years ago, I love riding with just a hat but honestly I'm more worried about getting smoked by some out of control kook that can't pizza than skiing into a tree. That being said it is an added comfort knowing my dome has a chance if being protected if I catch an edge in a tight glade.

I agree, but i think you really cannot deny the fact that IT HAPPENS, often, and at the sake of peoples physical well being. I feel that creating this thread IS doing something about it. It's creating conversation, creating awareness. Numerous people in this thread have shared personal experiences about how helmets saved their lives. Hopefully someone somewhere will take a look at this thread and throw on a helmet this season. And protect their brain.

Whats so wrong with looking at football or hockey.... big sports with more people, more money, and MORE DATA on head injuries as a result? They have all run the numbers and decided it is in peoples best interest to wear a helmet. I'm confident that if the same was done for skiing the results would be similarly compelling. I'm not saying skiiers have the same intensity or type of contact as people in those sports, but it is still significant. I personally know people that have died skiing and had other serious brain injuries... im sure you do too

that did nothing to invalidate what I said. All pipe skiers wear helmets just like the vert guys you mentioned.

I am not saying street skiers should not wear helmets but I do know a lot of street skiing influence comes from skateboarding and whether it is a good thing or not, you simply will not be getting shots published as a skateboarder in the streets if you are wearing a helmet. I support people wearing helmets especially the riders I work with, and some of them do wear helmets at times- people like Tim McChesney who thrive on going after high-consequence setups tend to wear a helmet often which I think is a great idea. Then there are some riders who are paranoid that wearing a helmet will play some placebo effect and cause them to hit their head somehow- I know it is ridiculous but when you have a rider say to you, literally the only times I hit my head are when I am wearing a helmet you can't say much back, other than respect that they are making a decision on their own accord and that whether or not you agree with them you have to let them do what they are going to do.

I don't care so much about their lives, they're experienced enough to know the consequences and know full well one good hit to the head and they're dead.

It's the lives of the inexperienced 14 year old who wants to act all 'Stept' and doesn't wear a helmet doing urban because he sees that's what his role models are doing then hits his noggin on a rail and is a vegetable for the rest of his life.

How is this any of your concern? So what if some kid becomes a vegetable. They made a choice and there is nothing you can do about it. Everyone needs to stop worrying about the actions of others and focus on themselves. The only thing you really can control is if you wear a helmet or not, end of story.

If they're a responsible adult then I have no problem with it. There's a reason why you can't vote till you're 18.

Young people are notoriously prone to not following reason or logic but to following what is 'cool' and fit into a certain look. Stept is creating a look through none of them wearing helmets and this look will 100% influence younger people to not wear helmets so they fit in with that look. Someone is going to get seriously hurt as a result.


Solution is to just have a simple warning in the beginning of their films says something like "helmets save lives. these are trained professionals". Just enough to get people thinking that maybe they should wear a helmet rather than emulate what they see verbatim.
