Binding Problem

If you ski park a lot chances are you or one of your friends have broken bindings because you landed switch and your skis popped off. If you have not heres what happens (sometimes), your binding break will come down and be shoved forward (the wrong way, because you are skiing switch), and possibly tear out the heal of your binding or bend the break. Doesn't it seem time that ski companies make a break that can bend forward and backward for switch mishaps? I dont know if the Reactors do this already but I just thought it up last night.

I don't really understand what your saying. I know that 4frnt is trying to modify the VIST bindgings to be more compatable w/switch landings.

That would be really hard to do. If you don't want that problem, you could just go back to safety leaches.

^ no, what he's saying is that the brake goes down the wrong way when you land switch and come out of the bindings, so there is a possibility of fucking your binding up

What if u just trim part of the brake and welded on a heavy spring or something? U know what i mean? It would be stiff enough to keep the ski from moving but bend if there was enough weight to dig it into the snow and consequently rip it out

yea i think i see what you are saying, but i also think that it would be really easy to make a ski break that will fold towards the heal (or heel dont know) AND the toe. This way you brake would not bend at all when you land switch and pop out. I am looking at my P12s right now and it looks totally doable.

i actually bent my brake pretty badly last year. i did a 180 and my right ski landed on my left binding hitting the release thing and my brake dug into the ground and bent the wrong way. i guess im lucky i didn't rip out or break my binding but i did have to bend the brake back

Brakes are easily replaceable on Salomon and Line bindings.

brakes are super easy to replace, but that's just an extra 15 bucks or so down the drain. i think this is a great idea, but it may be hard to get it to work right. the break has to angle either forewards or backwards b/c when you put pressure down on it (when you're clicking in), it goes back. if it was straight up and down or something, due to the angle, it would be hard to click in. i've had lots of skis come into the shop where i work that have bent brakes taht go nearly straight down, and they're hard to work with. i kinda wanna make a project out of this idea now. this could be fun. i know that my wording was kinda strange but wtf

OK so this is really hard to explain so if you dont understand the first time just read it again maybe you will get it:

I was just messing with my P12 bindings, mounted on Fujatives, if you let the ski sit on the carpet of your floor and push the ski forward the brake obviously folds to the heel and then drags (stopping the ski). Now try pushing the ski backwards, the brake ofcourse locks at a 45 degree angle, and that can cause problems (brake bent, binding metal bent or ripped out). I think that the brakes range should increase to 180 degrees, which means that we would have to add another spring to keep the brake at the 45 degree angle with no boot clicked in. This extra spring would allow the brake to fold toward the toe, eliminating risk of damage when alnding switch.

So basically we want a ski brake with 180 degrees of movement instead of just 45 degrees.

ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO NOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT
What needs to happen is we need the original and the new spring to max out at the normal 45 degree angle, this way the brake will sit at the normal 45 degree angle without a kier popped in.

but wont the ski be off your foot is the brake is going hit if your landing swich?????? and if u adjust it like u said^^^ dosnt that give a danger of the ski runing away

i know what your talking about exactly. this has happend to me so many times i ended up jsut tearing the break out somehow. a freestyle binding would be complete with lines pivot technology and a break that that can move either forward or backwards depending on the landing(switch or regular).

actualy monkeysteezes idea could work... but I would design it with a tense spring setup that would go all the way around to 45 degrees switch, because if it's sticking straight down I can still see it bending real bad.
And ^^ I have no idea how that would make a danger of the ski running away... maybe you misread it

nah my brakes r fine for now, they got bent last year, my bro had marker frees and they broke (Marker got him new ones for free but it was a pain in the ass), and he broke Salomons last year, both times he tore out part of the binding.

yeh i broke my markers twice doing that. the brake broke and the heelpiece got all fuckup up an loose. they won't warrantee them anymore, so now i just use them for urban jib skis. i haven't had these problems yet on my rossi or salomon bindings, so i hope they'll continue to work out for me.

my friend has the line binding, and one side of one of the breaks bent forward. nothing else on the binding moved i dont think, we just bent it back. its not exactly where it was bent back close to normal

Here is a simple solution that I think would work. Cut off one side of the brake so you only have one level that will catch the snow. This way when you hit switch (or even regular) the ski will kind of spin when it comes to a stop. It would still keep it from sliding down the hill or tip the ski over and a ski won't slide down a hill when it is on its side.
