Is urban the future?

theres only so much us as skiers can do in the park until we will reach a max. however there are endless amounts of ideas and different features out on the streets. what do you think?

i think urban is nothing new, it has been a part of the sport for a long time.  There are equal amount of endless ideas for the park or streets as long as you have a creative enough imagination to come up with them.

I think insurance and liability are ruining park skiing's progression. If they weren't an issue then park features wouldn't be basically the same as they've always been and there would be some mindblowing features that would be the progression of park skiing.

Urban is now.

Saying urban is the future is like saying that whatever surfers were wearing 5 years ago that mainstream culture just started to pick up on 3 months ago is the next hot thing.

There are plenty of mountains building very creative setups right now. There are plenty of people findings awesome stuff to slay for urban.


Both aspects are going to stick around for quite a while. IF you don't think anyone's being creative in the parks you need to look around more.

No. It is already happening. Also, some parks are having more urbanlike features. How you can say there is a limited amount of progression in park, I will never understand.

The future of skiing is going to be interesting. I think it will follow the path of snowboarding, like it has been since the late 90s. Skiing will split very abruptly into competition skiers and film skiers. Right now, top slope/pipe skiers still film (becoming less and less obviously) but soon, comp skiers wont film and film skiers wont do comps.

Snowboarding right now I think 1 or 2 comp riders film still but for every comp rider there are like 5 film riders. Skiing will eventually be like this, more money going into films and contests kind of staying the same. I think this will be sick though, I love the way snowboarding is going right now I'd love to see skiing go the same way.

Biking is interesting it kind of goes the oppsite. Some of the biggest comp riders have taken to only doing the biggest comps with more emphasis on filming. The biggest comps like crankworx are still the biggest shows and every one wants to win them. There are not really film riders yet as it still takes comp results to get your name there. Downhillers don't film much as they can't take the risk. But if you look at skiing some of the biggest comp skiers still have big film parts look at Tom for example he has a whole film this year. Things will change but you will still see film parts from the Olympic guys and other then on ns they will still be the best known riders.

I don't know a ton about any of those sports, I know skateboarding has plenty of content skaters (insert andy mcdonald, bucky, etc) but most of the street skaters all film and do contents. Its very different IMO. As for biking/surfing I have no idea.

It seems with snowsports, contests arent cool but thats because contests are just people hucking as hard as they can and most with no style. Contest skating is just as cool as film skating at least to me, they still do sick tricks that I wouldn't consider "hucking" but then get points for it. I dunno, I think snowsports are just a different breed.

if what you are saying is true, it will be interesting to see which way skiiers like Wallisch and Henrik go. I feel like Wallisch is already leaning towards filming, because while two years ago he accomplished everything possible in competition, last year I feel he really focused on filming and getting his project finished up.

I just don't want to trash my bases and edges, and every time I do, I think "you lose" ...so that stops me from doing a lot.

- urban is fully relevant, and it'd be interesting to hear some views from skateboarders and bladers, because how I see it, they'll push urban more than anyone else. I just don't like it myself, and interestingly I don't really like watching it either.. looks real try-hard... (there I go again, alienating everyone including myself)

A sub-segment within a sub-segment is not the future of skiing. Most park skiers will never hit an urban feature.

I watched a lot of snowboard flicks recently and I can say that urban in snowboarding is where it's at. There's A LOT of snowboarders doing urban, and there's a lot of diversity also, and it seems like the sponsors are there, with a lot of brands who have almost strickly "jib" snowboarders on their teams.

I think that skiing will catch up, well, I hope, because I'd love to see as much urban in movies as there is in snowboarding, and I'd love to see more all urban movies like Stept is doing.

I think people have to keep an open mind about urban and hit whatever they like and don't worry too much about standards or the current trends in skiing. If someone prefers to hit handrails, or do creative stuff, or do trannys, or all of them, they should do so, and people shouldn't worry as much about who hit that spot first or is that spot big enough for the camera? It can't be worse than another park edit
