Longboard Edit Critique

I liked it. But it was a bit repetitive and I started to lose interest around 1:30. Same slides and same camera angle for almost every shot. Get creative with the angle of the camera!

Thanks! yeah i was kinda getting that vibe. since you don't know the riders i definitely know how it could loose interest. i probably won't make them longer than a minute or two after this. the main rider in the edit (my friend jared) just left for college, so this was my last weekend to film with him. i wanted to get it all the shots in.


what do you think would be good angles to try? whenever i film i try to do a couple different ones, but im kinda running out of ideas.

First of all, tell your friend to wear a helmet. His lack of one detracted from the edit quality. It made me assume that he's kind of a tool. No offense to him, it just skewed my perception of the rider.

Also, get closer to the riders. You have a fisheye on that gopro, might as well utilize it. Maybe try some tripod shots as well.

Don't put in the shots where he falls, the reason people will lose interest is because he clearly falls in around 25% of the shots.

Try to put some filler in the make it interesting as well. I liked the time-lapse in the beginning, but having 3 and a half minutes of straight colemans and pushup slides got boring. Some B-roll could help that.

And strictly from a production standpoint, if you want people to notice your editing and filming, if you have some friends to film who are maybe up a notch in skill, you might get some more exposure when you upload. I know you might not have this, and no offense to the riders you filmed, but it's something to keep in mind. Better riding=better edit generally.

Main thing is just get closer. Maybe get a long pvc pipe like 7 foot, Put the gopro on the end and mimick a crane or jib shot.

@Forcillio, yeah man i get the helmet vibe. i tried to get him to wear mine (which he would occasionally) but he didn't like to since it didn't fit. I'm right at the point where i can start doing stuff again, so i'm definitely going to wear my helmet when i'm sliding again. just is smart. Yeah i'd like to get closer too. I'll make sure to focus on doing that. that lens can be such a pain sometimes. like in the intro shot, im only about a foot off the road but it looks like 10 feet. I'm glad you liked the time-lapse! it was my first time trying anything like that, and i was pretty happy with how it turned out. i'm definitely going to do that more. For sure, i know what you mean on the falling shots. Those could easily be trimmed out. And on rider skill, i was actually going to film with two dudes that are really good, but the damn gopro died after a couple shots. Im thinking the next edit will be around a minute or two, and only showing the best slides of each rider once or twice. i actually have like 8 friends that ride, but they all were busy when i filmed. My friend luke has a lot more experience with final cut, so i'd like to work with him more when i'm editing. i like the idea though.

@jiberfish, thanks for the follow up. good idea on the long pole, that could look pretty cool. i'm definitely going to work on the shots getting closer.

You should be like 2 feet away from him on the follow cams, also try to come up with some sort of plan or story for your edit. Like, some shots of us eating breakfast, or talking about the hill, or driving in the car, etc. Also, edit to the music. Especially in a song like that you gotta cut to the beat.

I would color correct a bit If I were you. The colors seemed a bit dull. Otherwise everyone else pretty much said it.
