Replying to WSKI106: A full review.
You’ve all been chomping at the bit to hear a detailed wski review, so here’s my opinion.
Intro- One of the most unique intros ever, Cali P kills it and it’s just flat out cool.
Pollard- Eric’s seg is divided into two parts: Part 1 is all his footage from Russia, and Part 2 is all the rest of his footy. It has more crashes than we are used to seeing in regular ski movies, but I didn’t mind at all. Plus, he more than makes up it up with some absolute stunners. The hang glider shot was one of my favorites of the year. My only complaint is that there may have been a little too much footage in his mini video on Line’s website. Monkey Mittens!
The Midgets aka Kye and Sean- These kids just destroy. On a skate or on skis. It gives you so much hope for the future, but makes you feel so woefully inadequate at the same time. It’s a great song, funny seg, and you can tell they had a lot of fun making it.
The Rory- The most unique segment I have seen in... forever. It has a perfect song, interspersed with a cool story and bits from old horror movies. People made this seg out to be a lot more gruesome than it was. Some amazing shots, Rory kills it... literally. You just have to see it for yourself. This is one of my favorite ski movie segments EVER.
Dash- This seg puts a whole new take on being a ski bum. Great idea, along with the appearance of Dash’s brother. The best part is a guy actually gave him some money. Dash is super smooth all over the place. I especially liked the tree jib at the end, and the wooden rail where he uses his hand to boost up onto it. (Shitty description, you just have to see it.)
Shoya and Mickael- Well done and good skiing. At first, it’s tough to tell Mick and Shoya apart in some shots, but after a couple viewings it’s no problem. I just wish Mickael would spend some more time on the snow and get a real segment together. His last few have been either short or barely existent. Snoopkael kills it but just never seems to have been able to compose a real segment since Royalty.
CR- I had high hopes for CR this year and he fully lived up to them. An excellent seg where he does it all, and looks just great doing it. The song meshes amazingly well. Although, you can easily tell where the footage from Top Gun was edited out and replaced, I must say, had it remained as originally composed, it would have been one of the best concepts ever. It’s really too bad. *cough* fuck msp *cough*
Tanner- Wow. Tanner year after year proves why he is the best. He just never ceases to amaze me. He doesn’t just rob the bank, he robs Fort Knox, and rides away on his trustee steed with posse in tow. Tanner’s at the top of the freeskiing game, no doubt about it. The segment was also amazingly edited and had a great song. I just fear the amount of “What’s the song in Tanner’s seg in Wski threads we’re going to have to endure over the next year since it seems to be custom done or created by a friend. Not likely to be available on Kazaa unless a kind soul rips it from the dvd.
Overall Opinion and additional Comments
This movie is the most unique ski movie ever. It is nothing like you have ever seen before. That alone makes it worth buying. Each segment has a unique theme and turns out super cool, the commercials are unique (personal fav is the Line one ft. Snoop Dogg), and the radio show concept is cool. Many people don’t like the Evan Raps commentary, but I thought it wasn’t bad. Although, don’t look to me for an honest opinion on that part because Evan could murder babies for shits 'n giggles and I’d still love him. The one person that really deserves some recognition for his amazing editing is Shane Nelson, he did a great job. I can only imagine how amazing this movie would have been if Pep hadn’t got hurt. All in all, Tanner and Iberg have created the freshest, most unique ski movie of our era, and I love it.
