Poison Ivy

Sup NS. Anyone know any over the counter stuff for poison ivy or possibly any home remedies that really work? I'm open to all suggestions, this shit is unbearable and it's all over my arms and legs. Thanks in advance.

Ive always used Zanafel and its worked for me, you could try that, but i dont know any home remedy's

I heard rubbing yourself with cow parsnip and then going out in the sun does the trick. If you cant find any of that just rub yourself with more poison ivy and it should go away.

i think it is hydracloristone or something like that, also calamine lotion, helps the itch.

another thing you can do to help the itch is to take an allergy pill

Calamine lotion (that pink stuff) is the best option. Tecnu is great if you think you have been exposed to it, but it hasn't set in yet. Go grab some Calamine Lotion.

i just got it today. all over my legs. ftw using this stuff called ivarest. but it does not work once the little bumps have bust from itching if your itching it. but it helps with the un-popped ones. 7.99 at rite-aid.

I wash with Technu as soon as it shows, and then cover it with Calagel every couple of hours until it goes away

No matter what anyone tells you, besides the initial 15 minutes of getting the oils on your skin, itching it will not spread the rash. So itch away.

Yeah so guy above me ain't so smart. Itching isn't gonna spread that shit but it'll leave you with scars so don't itch (plus scratching it makes it itch even more). Get calamine lotion or liquid Benadryl itch stuff, or if it's really bad, like bad enough to keep you up at night, then go get prednisone prescribed by your doctor. Anything non prescription will alleviate the itch but prednisone and other prescription meds are the only things that will actually help get rid of the rash faster. I'm on it right now for real bad poison ivy and it's been 1 day and it's feeling better. Good luck.

Never said you won't scar, just that it won't spread.

Here i'll actually be of help to op and anyone else who gets it. Whatever clothes you were wearing when you got the poison ivy, burn em. The oils will stay on there for 5+ years so every time you wear them, you will get rashes again.

Also everyone should take the time to get to know poison ivy and what it looks like. It's pretty easy to avoid once you know what to look for.

Use hydrocortisone twice a day for a week. You can't spread it, scratching leads to scars though. Can't infect other people, etc. If its on face between fingers/toes on your nuts, a doc may give you low dose systemic steroids like prednisone. Benadryl helps with itch, but makes you sleepy.

Goes away depending on sensitivity of skin. Hopefully under two weeks. Warm water helps. Also some kind of bath that helps, ill get back to you.

I'm working in pediatrics now, see it a decent amount

Wash your hands with dish liquid and use it in the shower it helps bring the oils out of your skin. Rubbing alcohol also does this pretty well. Go in the ocean as much as you can. whatever you do don't get it between your fingers and beat off or your screwed.

I used to get poison ivy like 5x per summer. This summer not as much (knock on wood), but one thing that'll get rid of it quick with some pain is popping the bubbles on the rash then putting rubbing alcohol in there, and it'll dry up in the next day or two and it's gone.

if you have any growing around you, rubbing touch-me-not on the poison ivy spots definitely seems to work for some people. repeated application and it'll clear up in a few days. this does not work for everyone though, just like not everyone gets poison ivy.

also calamine lotion is definitely great for itch relief.

Don't listen to these kids, the oil the plant secretes will cause the rash. if you itch while the oil is still on your skin you will spread it, but after you've taken a shower (cold water works better) and all the oils are washed off the rash won't spread.

as for the itch, use a hair dryer on the hot as fuck setting and aim it on your rash spots, hold it there until it burns with the scorching heat of a thousand erupting volcanoes, then take it off and let it cool down. repeat until satisfactory numbness of the area is achieved. not only does it feel great but it drys out the rash as well.

most poison ivy rashes occur only where there's been contact, but some sensitive people can get a systemic reaction to poison ivy which can cause rashes to pop up in pretty much any place on your body regardless of whether it's contacted poison ivy or not.

use a steroid based cream. Never scratch the itch, it will spread. Go consult a physician

I look at poison ivy and get it, but zanfel or whatever it's called works wonders if you follow the directions

Issue resolved, a combo of Benadryl, Calamine lotion, and hydrocortisone stopped the itch. Went to the doctors and got some steroid-based cream, so I should be good. Also, I'm on Cape Cod atm so I've been going in the ocean a ton and that's helping. Thanks NS!

My job is working with plants and I had to research poison ivy for my boss...

A wash can get rid of all the oils, but most likely will not. Better to be safe then sorry.

I'm not saying your wrong as not everything on the internet is true, but this statement was put out by the FDA and posted on the state of Delaware's official website

“The rash will only occur where the plant oil has touched the skin, so a person with poison ivy can’t spread it on the body by scratching. It may seem like the rash is spreading if it appears over time instead of all at once. But this is either because the plant oil is absorbed at different rates in different parts of the body or because of repeated exposure to contaminated objects or plant oil trapped under the fingernails.”

beats me dude, but my yard as well as the rest of the neighborhood I grew up in is covered in the stuff. I have crawled, rolled, and walked all over it growing up I have never once had it.

well they're missing info. I suggest becoming familiar with systemic reactions. and I suggest the FDA do the same. what they posted isn't wrong, it's just incomplete.
