Mounting with Binding Freedoms

Alright, I plan on buy a pair of ON3P FRs for the upcoming season. I'm mounting them with FKS 180s. What I want to know is, is it worth drilling for/installing inserts if I don't plan on switching the bindings out until I got pow skis in a year.

I want this setup to last me a while, so I don't want any risk of pull outs. Has anyone had experience with inserts? Do they give more strength to the mount points?

I plan on having my shop drill and mount my skis and then I would back them out and drill for inserts using a drill press. I'm technically inclined so installing the inserts isn't a problem for me.

I don't see any problem with installing quiver killers/binding freedom inserts on you skis a year early. Inserts will actually strengthen your mount, the pull out force required with inserts is something like 400kgs. Sorry if anything of the above doesn't make sense I'm on mobile.

I would. My plan if I was to ever use a pair of fks was to use inserts so if I needed to replace the brakes I could easily remove the heels without damaging the skis. There is no problem mounting skis with inserts even if you don't switch them

i'm not sure why someone technically inclined enough to mount inserts wouldn't just mount his own bindings right the 1st time not worry about pullouts and not put 16 bigger holes in a new ski
Unless you plan on taking that binding on and off several times this season why exert that $$ and energy
on something thats not gonna add any resale value to that ski

Completely forgot about that the brakes. Yea I think I'm just gonna drill for inserts. Thanks guys.

Inserts are actually stronger because they have a greater surface area in contact with the core, so they are less likely to pull out. Also some people use one pair of bindings for two skis or have two sets (one alpine and one touring) for one pair of skis. Plus, like I said before, fks brake swaps involve removing the heel piece, so having inserts makes it so you can remove them without damaging the core

I never said I wanted to sell the skis. I just want them to last for a couple seasons. Worrying about binding pullouts is not something I want to do. Like Blake said, switching FKS brakes is a bitch inserts would make it easier.

The only real reason to do it is the brake issue with fks. The issue I see with inserts is if you do have just one of them pull out your screwed. At least with a staNdard mount if you had a screw pull out you could fix it via a heli coil or a insert and keep the same mount position. But with inserts if they do pull out, which I have seen, they destroy the hole to the point where there is no hope of fixing it. It's really hard to try to fill the old home and the new mount usually has to be quite a long way away which can be an issue with the small foot print of the fks heel piece. But like I said with fks brakes as they are its worth the risk, so just make sure you get them right. Good luck and enjoy your new setup.

Eh, as long as you do a good job of mounting them then you will be fine. The first set of skis I ever skied on them with we're pure peak and jib ridden, mounted into a soft aspen portion of the core. Bindings have been off a few times and the inserts haven't pulled out or backed out with the screws.

I'll probably never do a traditional mount again. But I guess my situation is a bit unique.

There's no reason to spend time and money installing inserts in your situation. Even if you need to take the heel on and off a few times for brake-related issues, no problem. Improved pull-out resistance? Maybe, but a good mount is plenty solid. Stick with a normal mount and you can always add inserts any time in the future if you actually need them.

I don't think you will want to mount with inserts either. You said you plan on switching your bindings out to put on your pow skis? Are you going to spend the effort changing the brake size each time you want to put them on your fatter pow skis? Seems like FKS bindings aren't really the right binding for inserts unless you're switching them between park skis. Just my $.02.
