^ well, I don't know if i'd characterize subaru's as fast. They have some models with good power, but not all.

My thoughts: For the money, it is pretty hard to beat a Subaru. All-wheel drive, reliable, good on gas, powerful enough. The only thing I am not sure about is how they do in crash ratings.

Aesthetics aside, I would recommend a Subaru.

yeah josh has a 1997 outback with a box on top and it still gets pretty good mileage. the tank isn't very big though and it's 4 wheel drive. he only has a v4 so the power is a little lacking, but it's still an overall good car.

^ i've got one of those 97's also.

Not to be a wise ass lizziebeth, but they are horizontally opposed four cylinders. If i remember correctly, this is a little different from a v-4. It is not that much different, but it is one of Subaru's bragging points. The theory is that something horizontally opposed is less top-heavy, therefore the car has a lower center of gravity, therefore it handles better. It is also a selling point for Subaru, cause they claim it makes the engine quieter. The piston vibration on one side of the engine counteracts the vibrations from the other pistons, effectively dampening each other (less vibration, less noise).

subaru's are real nice. my friend just got a 2001 2.5 rs. NICE CAR! they are pretty fast considering most of them aren't sports cars. and they will last almost forever. allwheeldrive is nice too.

im still rockin my '93 impreza, and FUCKING LOVE IT

fills my tank for 18 bucks at 1.90, and i can go like 220+ miles, such good mileage, and even tho it was before standard all wheel drive, it still handles like a beast, even in the snow, i love my doob-aru

yeah i jsut got my 97 outback.Its so pimp. Good gas mileage not ugly, all wheel drive is sick for snow.

v4, horizontal 4, whatevs. it's still very much a 4. you can definately tell a difference between it and the 6 in my passat.

i must give subaru props for engineering the wrx. what a fine piece of machinery. fast as hell with all wheel drive and four doors.

1990 subaru legacy wagon. you've been in it craige you know how the subaru rolls haha. mine is before AWD was standard, so i dont have it, but its still real good in the snow, i have studded tired for it though. i get 30+ mpg highway too.

i got a 97 impreza wagon 5 speed the things pretty sick, hella sweet gas milage, and awd owns, but the only problem is that the road noise is hella fuckin loud, does anyone else who has a subaru have this problem, my mom drives a 2000 outback but theres really no road noise

boxer engines are awesome. Very quiet and balanced, plus subarus sound awesome. My mom has had a subaru for as long as I can remember, and we've never had a mechanical failure over the easily 300,000 miles we've driven in 2 cars. My mom currently has an 02' Outback, and it handles better than any car I've driven. Plus the 5 speed in it is butter. Only thing that bothers me is how high it revs at highway speed. 80MPH translates to 4000-4500 RPM, which after 1200 miles to Idaho burned a quart of oil. It's good on gas, and I personally like the looks.

I'd say you can count on 250,000 miles easy on a Subaru unless it's been neglected or rallied all the time.

I drive an 02 outback sport...definetely reccomend it...its decently fast with plenty of cargo room, but sporty enough to not look like a soccer mom car

My friends 2.5 was way fast, he now has a impreza w/ a WRX engine and other after market stuff so its incredibly fast now. And its an awsome ride up to the MT too, he goes like 60 in snow.

by box I assume they mean a cargo box attached to the roof rack.

I drive a 97 Outback Sport. A boxer 4 is in no way a v4. V in engine terms refers to the layout, such as 'boxer'. V means that the piston run in a diagonal fashion. The term 'boxer' comes from how an exploded diagram of the engine looks. Pistons laying flat pushing out. Subaru is known for this. They use it because of the above stated points, balance, reliability, etc. They aren't the only company to use it though, Porche, Ferarri, and other high end cars use, or have used horizontally opposed engines. Balance and center of gravity being the main reasons for use. Think about where the crank shaft is on a V engine. It's at the base, same goes with the boxer, but the rest is at that same level, giving it the low center of gravity, and with how much an engine weighs, that translates to great handling characteristics.

Subarus are defenitly safe. The forester sets the standard in it's class, none perform better. The legacy line does well also. The impreza is on the same chasis as the forester, so it's very safe too.

Get one, any year, any model, as long it's had is scheduled maintenance, it will run forever.

They're simply opposing cylindars. My dad's BMW 1100GS (motorcycle) has an opposing twin, and it's the smoothest engine I've ever ridden. Hardly any vibration at all even at 125 miles an hour. Getting there is almost scary fast too. I think they're originally German.

i had a 1992 Loyale back in highschool. Bought if for 1500 bucks and it became known as my Ghetto sled. It had 170,xxx when i bought it, i drove it till 210,xxx and then i sold it. It never broke down and I put it through so much terror. I lived on the edge of farm country so most of my buddies had big grassy fields for horses. We would put the horses away and go rally racing. This car totally own. I only got rid of so i could buy a Jeep and go to college.

Sti's do get worse gas milege. Who cares though, if you want great gas milege, get a Volkswagon TDI something. If that's what you're looking for, you won't be happy with an STi. The ride is harsh, the steering is insanly quick, and the stock tires don't really even hold traction in the rain. It is a true sports car.

yeah i got a 96 vw and it's superb on gas. i was deciding between a vw and a subaru, and for the money i had to spend, i felt that i could get a better condition vw than a subaru.

so i didn't read anyones post. however!

i just got a subaru outback legacy (1998...key year) for $7600.....everything was great about it until i moved to the mountains and found out it had a shit load of engine problems. all in all buy the suby's but check that shit out first...

get the 1998 model as well; all leather and pimped out. it was the 30th year anniversary.
