Meh, he doesn't know because he didnt try it. Taking a year off after high school was the best somewhat major decision I have ever made for many reasons. If you aren't sure about college or what you are studying, take a year off. If you know what you want to do, I would still take a year off. It sounds lame, but giving yourself a year to learn about yourself really works and helps. Giving yourself time to learn and really think about what you want to get out of your life will help you avoid wasting time later I think.
In my case, I was a weak high school student. I didn't care about it, nor did I try very hard. This showed gpa wise. I applied and got into the U anyway and deferred for a year. After taking a year off I learned how much more I value learning and having something to devote my thought to. GPA may not be a big deal, but I have a 3.7 and am in the Universities honors college as well as a number of other groups. At the end of the day though that may not matter, but it's helping me get a lot more out of my education and money and has helped me learn a lot more about what I want to do with my life. I feel less hopeless if you will.
