Your dog and skiing

I had a vibe this thread had been made, but when I searched it was page after page of shitty for sale thread for B-Dog jackets and other miscellaneous Inspired threads.

I am getting a dog. I am finally getting one after 18 years of near petlessness. I am moving into my Dad's and we agreed a third fella in the house would be the perfect solution.

Winter companionship for this dog would be:

1. Being my best fucking friend because I am tragically lonesome.
2. Bootpacking with me mostly in the Franconia area
3. Accompanying my Dad on his extended Nordic trips (yeah I don't like Nordic skiers either)




In the rest of the year he would be joining my Dad or myself on any number of outdoor outings. I am a long distance runner, and my father an aspiring triathlete.

Essentially this dog is going to get his fair share of activity, trust me. While the loving snow element is stressed, I don't want my puppy keeling over in the summer because he has a think, profuse double coat. I found a good amount of information, with my jumping off point being an Unofficial Network


1. St. Bernard
2. Bernese Mountain Dog
3. Great Pyrenees
4. Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
5. Husky
6. Icelandic Sheepdog
7. Entlebucher Sennehund
8. Karalachan fucking Bear Dog
10. Maremma Sheepdog

A lot of these dogs we found on the extra large side of pups, which is something I may not be ready for. Narrowed and expanded the field to include some mix breeds

1. Bernese Mountain Dog
2. Icelandic Sheepdog
3. Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
4. Border Collie
5. Mixes of any of the above?????

What I am now asking for and getting to the crux of this thread.

Does anyone own or having any substantial opinions/anecdotes on these dogs? I looked all over the internet but sometimes this is the community I trust the most. Sometimes.

Also, this doesn't mean I would be completely against a mutt from the shelter, because I just want to be loved and love a puppy back. But I cannot be dragging my retriever or puggle through the snow and across fields and hills and blah blah blah, he'll hate me ): ): and I just want to be loved.

Get a Malamute, they love snow and they're awesome dogs.

Also, anything mixed with a lab is usually a safe bet.

Still sticking to G.Shepard. Not to get on anyones case about labs but about 90% of labs I've EVER seen are overweight and lazy as fuck. I've yet to see a german shepard that cant out perform any other northern mountain dog.

I am a bit biased but I would say huskies are a breed you should look into. They are great dogs for snow (they were practically made to pull sleds). And for sure a smart breed but it also depends a lot on the trainer as this can totally change a dogs disposition. A couple downsides though are that they do shed and they can be a bit stubborn. I have had multiple dogs and my husky was my fav.

Dude just get a lab. Don't discount that that aren't "mountain dogs". At my hill almost all the avi dogs are labs man. They are great with kids. They don't bark. Easy to train. Lots of energy, but pretty chill around the house. You can take em hunting and shit. And they are super friendly. Just get a lab man

australian shepard no doubt, they are smart, energetic, and mad cute, i have no doubt it will be able to more than keep up with you on your trips. They also have a good life span

if youd of search harder you'd find dog threads where everyone posts their breed as the best, just like this one
since you have real expensive dog tastes I'd add leonberger to that list.
i'm on my 4th newf good winter dogs but their forte would be in the water and chill disposition

I remember being crushed when we found out the furkid had bad hips @ 18 months
but $5k a road trip to sunvalley and a hell of a vet and some hardwear later

goin on 8 now and slowin down a lot, but still accompanies me on river trips and has been a therapy dog visiting shriners hospital, a juvie delinquent facility and a host of other places promoting the bond of human animal interaction

any of those breeeds have the potential to be that which you desire but

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Border Collie, and I've also had Newfoundlands (3), Estrela Mountain Dogs (2), and a King Charles Spainiel. One of the perks of having divorced parents is twice the number of pets. But anyways onto the dogs, really depends on what your looking for I would say border collie is a solid choice if you plan on being super active all seasons, which it sounds like you do. I think a Bernese would also be good but may struggle over the summer on longer runs but they have a definite chill factor that I don't really see in my border collie. Then also border collie has a longer life expectancy as with most smaller dogs and the Bernese's would be shorter and may be more prone to hip injuries etc. I cant really speak to the other breeds because I haven't had personal experience with them. In all honesty though just try and go see some of them I think once you get to see some of the dogs in person one will just click with you.

Pyrenees can be really stubborn. They are great watchdogs though. When there is more then one of them, they take turns staying awake at night to watch.
Bernese mountain dogs have got to be the most gorgeous dog breed I've ever seen. All of them that I have been around loved people and were really fun.
You'd be surpried how good mutts can be though. My friend has a Pitt bull, Rott weiler, german shepherd, lab mix. It has got to be the most badass dog Ive ever met in my life. Really nice though once you get to know him.
I used to have a golden retriever and he was amazing. So full of energy and love. I miss that dog all the time. He had epilepsy and would have seizures all the time. Then one morning When I woke up to go get him he was gone.
Now I have a Newfoundland/yellow lab mix. She is amazing. The most well behaved dog ive ever had the pleasure of owning. She loves the snow too!

My friend has a corgi lab mix, it is short with short legs like a corgi, but bigger. It doesn't seem to realize that it's not a small dog either. I'd imagine it would have the same problems a corgi has going down stuff though. And it must be a yellow lab, cause it's still corgi/yellow lab colored and it has the white chest like a corgi. Very energetic and nice though, and corgis are cool, labs are cool so...

if you get a husky, be prepared to go for a run with it every single day and get a tall fence if you have a yard because they run away often. i think a german shepherd or border collie would suit you the best though, tboth are amazing dogs because they are loyal as well as athletic, plus they will be fine in heat and cold.

My personal biased opinion would say border collie
Pros
-smart
-Will run till their heart explodes
-loves to be outside all day
-easy to train
-will go outside in any weather
-will love you forever


Cons
-Will run till their heart explodes
-will attempt to heard you.
-If they get bored they can be pretty destructive/just run off. Mine has always come back though after like 30-45 min.
-May not be tall enough for really deep snow
