ski halfpipe should NOT be in the olympics

although it would be good for exposure of the sport... look what it did to snowboarding. snowboarding used to be cool and about style and now everything is so technical and about points in the olympics. let the snowboarders have this one, i say, we still have freedom in the sport. remember what FIS did to skiing's freestyle events? well, if the olympics got their hands on skiing halfpipe it may end up that way... only WORSE!

i say let halfpipe into the olympics. let the official judges do watever they feel like, hire our own set of judges, and decide the real winner based on our own rules and judging. that way skiing gets huge exposure, there will be yet another chance to watch pros throw down, and we will get to screw over those crappy 'ussa approved' judges.

do you people remember when snowboard halfpipe was first in the olympics, back in japan? it was so horriblke, like NO air, and the chicks barely made it to the lip. i think that the main problem is that the drug stuff would keep some of our best atheletes out, so we would not be fairly represented. its the same thing w/ snowboarding, and its sad because the guys who won medals in the olympics really arent even the best. if that happens in skiing... death.
and im glad skiing halfpipe isnt in the olympics. its better for those of us who dont want 4000 tanner wannabes on our hills.

^If people like Powers and Kass weren't the best snowboarders in 2002 then why did they also podium in all the big pro events that season as well as the Olympics? And to Frenchy88 while FIS admittedly has a lot to figure out about halfpipe and how to judge it, they do NOT make you call your run beforehand.

just leave it like it is we dont need a 'newschool skiing' olympic comp. Yeah lets make it an official sport! and then we can have all these gymnasts putting grabs into their quad-flips and shit, because we all now they can kick our asses. And no judge at any olympics is going to take a styly 180 over a hucked triple flip with a safety half way (after all it is new school) plus they can all train hardcore and train in the gym 24/7, awesome

Just to clarify on the judging comments, current FIS ski halfpipe judging is as follows: 5 Judges- 1 Execution, 1 Difficulty, 1 Amplitude, 2 Overall Impression. Each Judge gives a score out of 10. So really the hucked 1260 wouldn't give much of an advantage since there is only one difficulty judge. Of course what is probably more important than the criteria they use, is the people judging. I think if they can start hiring people who really understand the sport well, then almost any judging criteria would probably work.

i agree it shouldnt be in the olympics.. whats the point? for one thing it will just bring a whole bunch of posers into the sport(cough cough SNOWBOARDING) It will make it too competitive.. Skiing should be all about having fun and not trying to beat another country...

i myself, think that skiing should def not be in the olympics, this style of skiing was not found on the basis of publicity but of the basis of having ur own unique style and going with it, a few years ago i had an interview in a local newspaper for skiing, and they asked me why i like this sport so much, my answer was that
'i can do whatever i want in it, i dont have to be coached like in soccer, i dont have to be put up to stupid standards like in other parts of skiing, and i do it to have fun'. think about that for a second, that is why we have free riding isnt it, and all the olympics will do is feed greed for another medal and expose our sport to a deadly amount of posers that will all round wreck our sport

While I agree that any kind of slope style {i know its the x games terminology i dont wanna hear it) i dont see halfpipe as being something technically detrimental to the sport. Mainly I believe this because, lets face it, half pipe is somewhat cornering anyway, although you can do any trick you want, you are limited to how you can do them. This makes this sport somewhat similar to other things such as diving and arials, while you can do what you want, you are limited as to how to do it. Therefore i think that half pipe in the olympics would give some much needed publicity to the sport, beginning to even it out with snowboarding, while not hurting the essence of the sport. Just look at snowboarding, it still has plenty of freestyle soul, even with its olympic coverage.

And if they aren't making enough money to 'feed their (theyre) greed', then I think we need more publicity. Why are you people so against publicity. Publicity simply means more twin tips and clothing to choose from. Its not gonna change the number of poor skiers in the parks, its not going to change skiing.

I agree totally with dynarider... why would we want to go againt other countries and shit... us skiers just all chill together even if theres a language blocking us... shit and why the fuck would we wanna be coached... freestyle skiing is all about having fun and doin the shit you want it cant be restricted to a bunch of dank ass judges who dont know that the fuck there talking about

think about all the dumb shit in the olympics now... not necessarily the winter olympics, but ppl devote their lives to stuff like tossing hammers, so why not put something cool like halfpipe skiing in? it cant do any harm, just bring the halfpipe to a new level and give really good halfpipe skiers something else to strive for... plus as others have said, bring more exposure to the sport

most of you are just spouting off, saying it will kill the soul of the sport. what the hell does that mean? 'it will bring more poseurs into the sport' again, what does that mean? once they are in the sport, and can ski, are they really poseurs still? just because someone is no longer going to smoke up and work their asses off for simply another comp, with another judging format, doesn't mean you can still ignore your soccer coach and do whatever you want.

putting halfpipe into the olympics will not force everyone into it. it won't change every event(xgames etc) into an fis sanctioned event. there may become more fis sanctioned events, that doesn't mean your skiing will be affected.

in early comps the three phils were in they would do inverts and got booted out of the comps, everyone knew they did the best tricks. did the rules change the way they skied? no. grow up and deal with it. ski the way you want and let people do things. or are you the FIS?

Style is so subjective. How do you plan on quantifying it? Competitions are based on a system. Style would be very difficult to develop into race criteria. There isn't even a conclusive, universal definition of what style IS so how do you plan on JUDGING people on it?

Competition is not about style. Its about executing a routine to make the judges happy. That is why so many people are at least a little opposed to it. Competitions wouldn't mean shit if it were based on style because the criteria is based solely on someone's opinion of what looked 'good.'

The reason that Ganja can be considered a performance enhancer is:

A skier may be too much of a headcase to compete well if they don't burn one. So by burning one they enhance their performance. You know it's true. If you can't clean up your pee for the olympics you are fuckin' weak and your priorities need adjusting. Don't go there and fail the test, show up clean and ready to win fair and square. If you don't want to do that, then don't go, do your own thing.
Also, CONCEPT DUDE the olympics aren't gay, it's a venue for the best athletes in the world to compete with the other best athletes in the world. That attracts a huge audience of spectators. Those who are fortunate enough to attend the Olympics can feel a vibe that is unique, positive and diverse. It's a good feeling.
Hell yeah, pipe should be in the olympics!! It would be one of the most fun events to watch. Go Tanner, C.R., Candide, Sarah, Phil, and the rest of the contenders, you guys will be psyched with Olympic gold around your neck.
