Ski "filmers" are over rated.

I just feel like filming any action sport is to easy of a " career " it doesn't really take talent you just follow a guy in the air til he lands. Fill it with b footage of trees and nature and shit for skiing or snowboarding, if it is bmx or skating fill it with streets and city life you have an edit. The only thing these " filmers " have going for them is that their mommy and daddy bought them the best equipment (splice) so they can get the best pretty shots. Anyone can make edits it doesn't take much, just a lot of money to spend on the best equipment. As far as talent goes you don't need any as long as the shots are super digital hd.

theres a difference between editing your raw Gopo footage in I movie and taking well thought out bits of footage that were carefully calibrated in the field into programs like after effects and premier. also if tour adding animations like names and and text over video not the stupid defaults ones its really hard. still frame photography is hard enough shooting and editing but video is much more difficult. seriously doubt OP knows any of the following Lightroom, photoshop, after effects, premier, flash been using them for 4 years and still learn stuff daily.

i dont know if your trolling or not but i think im getting dumber and dumber by reading your fucking idiotic posts. If your so good at filming, make an edit, cause if you are good at filming and editing, you can make even a somewhat average skier look sick as fuck. The reason 4bi9 and crews like them got so big is not only because they are dirty, its cause they know what theyre doing behind the camera and on the computer.

Alright, I never post a god damn thing on Newschoolers but this deserves some attention.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and agree with the little shithead that started this endless conversation..Obviously he isn't trying to put down people who film for a living, especially for huge production companies (at least thats what it seems like to me). Some people are responding to this so viciously without thinking about how broad the term "filmer" has become.

We all have to realize that it has become WAY easier in the past decade to film and edit videos. The quality of products has made it way easier for us, and if you don't agree with that you're wrong. It's hard to tell who is a talented filmer and who isn't until you see their work. Because of course I agree with everyone saying there are filmers with talent, thats obviously true.

The point I'd like to make is that I see so many kids cruisin through the park with full filming setups, filming their friends to straight airs all day, while they should be just skiing. This is where I think the problem lies. Some kids realize they aren't that good at skiing, they lose confidence, so they buy a camera and become a filmer. I've seen it many times, its common.

I think this kid is just trying to point out there are too many filmers out there that take themselves way too seriously, while (in my opinion) they should really just be skiing and stop worrying about documenting every second on the hill.

I don't care who disagrees with this, I really dont. Just thought I'd post one thing on here that isn't a vicious attack on a kid who is just trying to make a decent point.

I don't think you realize the sense of accomplishment that many people get out of filming. Getting a good shot feels a lot like landing a new trick, even if you aren't a great filmer.

Don't mix "filmers" and "pro filmers" in your statement.

What do you think about people like Ronan Ozturk, Guido Perrini or Matt Pain who have more orl ess 20 years experience in big mountain filming. I mean dude, filming isn't what you see on NS's homepage !

You are the biggest fucking idiot ever. Filimg and photography to most people is a form of art its not just about the skiier in the frame, or the trick he does. Every single part about the shot is though carfuly about and placed. We spend our hard earned money trying to produce the best video we can learing with years of expierence, the best part is when you put out a video and people really apperciate what you have created and reconize the hard work you put into it. I hope you fell like a piece of shit because you juged and hated on every sigle filmer on NS and everything theyve made. Told them that all of there hours and dollars spent was a waste and did not reconize what they did what so ever.

i think i know what you're trying to get at with this thread, but you worded it a little to awfully. some people make edits as a hobby and call themselves "ski filmers", some make money from it and are under the category of professional "ski filmers". you just assume anyone with a camera and glidecam refer to themselves as "ski filmers" on the other hand. but thats where youre wrong

Filmmaking in the action sports realm requires a lot of patience, time, dedication, work, and of course skill and talent. You have to have an eye for shots and how to put them together in a final product. Everyone has said what I was going to say here, so I wont rant on how mislead you are. I have been studying film for over 4 years now and still am a terrible editor and filmmaker. I compare my work to others and know that my shit sucks. But I will continue to work hard and learn how to become a better filmmaker by making one film at a time. Just have to devote more time and energy to my passion.

As someone who works professionally as a cinematographer (advertising, films, promo videos) and does ski filming on the side for fun every once in a while, I can say that while ski filming is MUCH more accessible and isn't exactly rocket science like it used to be (before you had to use NDs, light meters, etc just to expose properly-- nowadays the new GoPro's footage is damn near indistinguishable straight out of the camera on auto settings) it does take years of practice to even just get your rhythm right when doing follow cam, especially with good athletes at high speeds-- and that's not even taking into account the ability to keep a camera steady and on point, with a rig or otherwise.

I love ski filming simply because it takes a lot of skill to do right, and when you do get it right, it feels good. I've taken a lot of my inspiration in my work from ski filming, because it's super innovative and super dynamic. I'd love to be able to do it more, but unfortunately there's no way to get paid [well] doing it, which is part of the reason that creativity and freedom of expression exists in the first place.

The filmers you see, even the ones who you might not consider to be any good, are doing that shit day in and day out and have to be on their game 100% of the time because the athletes are going to land maybe 50% good-- and maybe 10% makes it to the final edit. And while we're at it, let's talk editing-- Editing, to do it right, takes 10x as long as it took you to film it, no matter what type of project you're working on. Try it sometime-- I've been doing it for 10 years and I hire an assistant editor on a project any chance I get to deal with that bullshit.

Sure, you're right in the sense that any chump can go out with a pro skier, shoot a shitty edit, and post it and get tons of views simply because the skier is dope. But if you know the filmer's name, and if the filmer puts out a lot of material, that takes tons of dedication and organization in the first place, which is why you won't see people doing it that aren't super passionate about it, which is why everyone hates you now.

Try using Final cut pro x for a day and see how much you figure out.. it takes time effort and skill to produce good edits. I have been filming for a year or so and am not even close to being a even an "Okay" film maker. its a lot harder then it seems.

Definitely. And then theres the part about creativity and vision. Sure anyone can put clips into a line and throw some film burns in there. But a really good edit or video with blend together seamlessly and almost tell a story. You can feel the emotion of the videographer and riders through the video screen when watching a really good video, or at least I can. That takes talent.

Agreed, I have been trying to film for 2 years now and i haven't even scratched the surface, I took 2 film classes and film every other day if not every day. and i still suck. Yeah i can make a dumb edit for me and my friends to watch so we can feel cooler about our selves. but filming takes serious talent, practice, and creativity.

Also if you had any talent you'd probably have the money to own the equipment the "pros" own.

I come from a family with a single mom, but own all my equipment. I'm not saying i'm talented. But I seem to get hired for quite a few jobs. I was raised far from rich. It's not all about money and equipment. I've seen plenty of good work come from cameras that cost a fraction of what I own that make me feel behind the curve.

Although this is completely ridiculous and not true, I think there is a valid point about ski edits... It's definitely not an easy career, and the successful people in the industry have put endless hours in to get them to where they are, but there are very few filmers on NS who (in my opinion) I would consider good filmmakers. It's becoming very easy for anyone to get t2i, glidecam with a 11-16mm and follow their friends around, then make an good ski edit. I think a lot of people are confusing these people to be "good filmmakers". I think the majority of us on here including me would not be able to produce an actual high quality film. There's a lot more to filmmaking then filling a timeline with a bunch of pretty pictures. Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of sick ski edits on NS, but most of them follow a generic format that many people can replicate with some practice and equipment.
