Ski "filmers" are over rated.

I just feel like filming any action sport is to easy of a " career " it doesn't really take talent you just follow a guy in the air til he lands. Fill it with b footage of trees and nature and shit for skiing or snowboarding, if it is bmx or skating fill it with streets and city life you have an edit. The only thing these " filmers " have going for them is that their mommy and daddy bought them the best equipment (splice) so they can get the best pretty shots. Anyone can make edits it doesn't take much, just a lot of money to spend on the best equipment. As far as talent goes you don't need any as long as the shots are super digital hd.

I have to say I agree with alot of the filmers and shitniks. alot of the time they are just the fucks that couldn't keep up so now they film. and often time you never see that hammer you laced kuz said film fuck is being a shiesty fuck

how to solve problem.


learn to edit, buy own cam (Mcdonalds is hiring, but most of you mountain town simps don't have to work :)), don't put out bitchmade edits, it makes us all look bad to watch your soap opera BS attempt at a ski edit.

proper edit= at least 9-15 tricks a minute including multiple trick lines, no BS filler only real shit this is a ski edit of a person doing stunts on skis lets keep it that way, to a song that doesn't suck, and no slow mo.

there are exceptions to the rule such as documentaries, personal taste, etc.

but if it comes down to showcasing freeskiing at a very high level. don't be a bitch

Just because someone has a fun fucking job, does not mean that it isn't respectable. Legitimate filmers/photographers work super hard doing what they love. There's no shame in that at all.

That said, there are a lot of people who consider their photography and film making a job, but simply aren't good enough to turn it into a respectable career. To the top 5% who really know what they are doing however, I salute you.

Some is true.. but the whole statement is false as a whole. It takes alot of skill to get sick shots and work a glide cam. You might think it's as easy as clicking record but it really isn't that easy

im glad this isnt in ski gabber anymore, all this bickering over whos pro and what it takes to be pro... i can only imagine the porn industry fighting over what angles and editing is better for squirting and cum farting... if the fucking is good im gonna watch it, i come to ns.com for skiing. seems like media is more of a concern than skiing nowadays. freestyle doesnt stand a chance.

This thread was straight up idiot, nonsensical, and offending to any filmers out there. I barely consider myself a filmer but have been editing for about 4 years now and I can tell you this shit is hard. Both filming and editing. I really hope this thread is a poor attempt of trolling because you may be the single most ignorant person on NS. You have absolutely zero knowledge of filming, video editing, or producing yet call it easy. That's like someone who has never skid saying skiing takes absolutely no skill and only rich white kids do it. Every single point you made is invalid.

The first part if your post is partially incorrect. Does the user need to be good to make a great filmaker? Yes. But unfortunately, especially with the ski industry, so many people buy their way into filming. Its a minority, but it still happens. I can name a few filmers who are "big time", yet are only in their spot because they can afford a RED, fs700, etc.

I somewhat agree

I agree that Money can be a HUGE factor in production. and those who have the access to expensive equipment already have the tools to create the best productions out there. Better equipment = better production = better videos

I believe that people also have different outlooks on how to capture and portray subjects. Give 2 people a camera and tell them to film the same action on their own = their videos will never be exactly the same. ever.

It is the person / people who utilize the euipment and produce the video you watch; you may hate it, you may love it, that is where the magic sparks. Talent and skill are definitely applicable to making a good video.

I do agree that there are people who have access to great equipment, and don't utilize the full potential. I do believe that people make bad videos. Some people make bad videos on this very site who have great equipment. There are a lot of videos on here as you describe... Some Ski filmers are VERY overrated. Some people just don't have that mojo to make their videos work for me. They rely too much on the Camera and euipment

^However this is all opinionated when it comes down to it.

I also believe that there are people who own sub-par equipment and rock the crap out of videos.

I DO BELIEVE YOU when you say you could take NICE cameras and NICE euipment out and make an equally good ski video as ones you are comparing too.

However you have to take time and effort to actually go out and make that happen! To me THAT is some kind of skill. AND who knows how it could turn out. I could watch a video filmed on a RED and hate it... and then i could watch a video filmed on a Sony handycam and love it.

I am assuming that you have some camera knowledge already, so doesnt that qualify you as having some skill / talent? If i gave a RED epic to my DAD and said "hey go out and film + edit a ski video" the results would not be so good. Nice equipment is one thing, using it to its potential is another...

It is all subjective when it comes down to it. But the business can be much more and alter things..

Abes videos are perfect example...you see hundreds of shitty goPro videos but his edits are up there with the best edits using the best equipment. Why? talent and practice

ask mommy to get you a nice camera so you can become a pro filmer overnight. till then fuck you

I'm in conneticut so it's highly unlikely, but I can almost guarantee your shots would look pretty awful considering you would have no idea what your doing. At hood this summer I let multiple friends of mine borrow my equipment and each of them were disappointed in their work and realized themselves how hard the art is... I'm sure you would discover the same

Also how about those guys who shot a skiing video with a 50 or so year old camera. It turned out great. Filming and editing isint something that you just do. Its a art, some people have it some people dont.

Filmers have just gotten soo at, and made it look so smooth that they make you think its just that easy. Maybe for them it gets to the point, where they love doing it and have done it soo much it becomes relatively easy. But becoming proficient in something is never a walk in a park.

I Disagree. It actually does take some effort to make an entertaining edit that people won't minimize after the first 10 seconds. I have made a lot of edits, and only a few of them are mildly intriguing.

I can speak from personal experience and most on here that shoot seriously will agree with me. The amount of work that it takes to be in that top tier of filmmakers (make a respectable living) is much more than most think. For most of the guys on here, shooting action sports is probably what pays the least out of what they shoot, most do it because they love to shoot/edit it. Your favorite ski edits on here from people who film for a living were probably supplemented by working another film gig that you will never see, I know thats true for me. I film skiing because I love it, it takes a lot of handwork and no, not everbody can do it, guaranteed.

You can't be serious? some of the ski filmers are some of the most versatile talented riders out there. Take Abe Kislevitz for example. He works for GoPro and shoots the jumps with the rest of his crew and even does tandem flips... to say that these guys have no talent is wrong and i challenge you to make an edit as good as he does

OP is onto something. Equipment is just one factor that can give someone a head start. But as prices come down, that head start is dwindling. And also, people are going to be watching online in 360 and 480 even if it can be watched at 1080. Also, not sure if so many people are creating true films with storylines, use of archetypal imagery and characters - they're just recording tricks. Nothing wrong with that, but if you're not involved with (5?) other non-actors, you're probably not creating a film.. I think a film should be considered as something people will pay to watch.

To me creating a film is more like creating someone's dream and thus taking into account all the pacing, drama and emotion that can go with it.

... thus filmers are overrated (by definition,) because they are not creating films, they are creating sports edits. Or rather, it's more a misapprehension that overrating.

But there's demand for these edits, and people enjoy watching them - but they're not creating films. It's more the role of "visual technical marketing stylist" and not "filmmaker" - but at the same time such a specialization is by no means easy (to do well.)

When did ski filmers start garnering enough respect that they became overrated? Last time I checked as the filmer I am the bitch in all situations... just because I'm wearing a film pack doesn't mean I have room to carry your fucking goggles, poles, hats, etc.

I will say if that is a filmer's best effort (follow + b-roll + music) and they expect to become a professional in any facet of video they will never be successful, and most certainly never make any money in this industry considering 99.9% of skiers barely make anything. Just like the sport itself it's all about progression and innovation. You don't see Level 1 and Stept filming park laps with GoPros and 7Ds. Furthermore you don't see Abe Kislevitz using his GoPro like ANYONE else.

As a hobby filmer, I tend to not care about peoples' opinions of my own videos because I make them as an excuse to have fun with my friends, and meet talented skiers all while living in one of the worst climates to be considered "skiable." I have a career elsewhere that I am perfectly satisfied with so getting to film skiing at all is a bonus.

I'd say something like fuck you, or another rude thing involving female body parts, but hey this is Newschoolers after all... feel free to bitch all you want it's not going to get you very far no matter what you say or do.

OP, let's actually put this to the test, and see if you can even do half of what you say. Download shots that other hard working, talented, and overall very impressive cinematographers have put online, and make an edit out of them. They are all already color corrected, chroma keyed, etc...all you have to do is put them together over music (or so you think)....good luck ya dumb fuck.

"Too easy of a career". What kind of meth are you smoking? Do you honestly believe that there are more than a handful of guys out there making money shooting/editing skiing? Even working for guys like MSP, PBP, TGR, etc. most cam ops or editors are going to make a salary that dwindles in comparison to what somebody would make doing the same thing in commercial video production. That's not to mention that the work is inconsistent, that you'd likely have to get your feet wet as unpaid intern, etc. etc.

You owe a debt of gratitude to the guys putting out quality edits (especially those you see here on NS); they're sacrificing their time, money, and energy to make the content you enjoy. They're the ones who only get to take a handful of good turns on their pow day because they're more concerned with sharing the stoke with the rest of the world. They're the guys who hike miles through deep snow with a 60 pound camera bag just to get one shot. Furthermore, imagine what a joke this site would be without the quality filmers, photogs, and editors who create its content.

In short, fuck off.
