Ski "filmers" are over rated.

I just feel like filming any action sport is to easy of a " career " it doesn't really take talent you just follow a guy in the air til he lands. Fill it with b footage of trees and nature and shit for skiing or snowboarding, if it is bmx or skating fill it with streets and city life you have an edit. The only thing these " filmers " have going for them is that their mommy and daddy bought them the best equipment (splice) so they can get the best pretty shots. Anyone can make edits it doesn't take much, just a lot of money to spend on the best equipment. As far as talent goes you don't need any as long as the shots are super digital hd.

Exactly. You can copy what other people do, or make it special and be creative, which sets other filmers (ehv, martinis, mcfalls, etc) apart from the rest.
Sure, anyone can go out and make a half decent edit, you see it all the time. Just like you can see someone play "blackbird" on the guitar. You gotta make it your own, though.

I guess...if it's as easy as pointing a 'digital hd' camera, I am curious what OP can produce for a video. I mean, it shouldn't be that hard, it takes zero talent. Right?

wow. now that the op mentions it, i wonder why edits from different people with the same camera don't look the same, and why some are god awful and some are amazing. we must be in the fucking matrix because according to the op, anyone can point a "digital hd" camera and bam.

oh wait...i know why, because some people have loads of talent and put in countless hours to be better than the rest. but what do i know, im just another dude with a 60D

Please try to go out and film something, anything, with manual settings, focus etc. take into account the weather and what/who you are filming, ambient sound, multiple angles, different lenses and countless other details. Then get back to your computer and scroll through your footage for hours looking for shots that actually worked how you wanted them to and getting rid of the other 90%, then edit it for the next couple of weeks and get back to us please. Even if you are trolling your "opinion" shouldn't be voiced because I do not think you have any idea how hard people work to make the edits you enjoy so much.

Alright so I hate to put it in this sense but Evan and myself can agree by saying at least with our as you say "so called career's" we make damn good money to do something we dreamed about and worked an amount that you probably cant fathom for, for many years... I check myself every once in a while because I feel so blessed to do this shit on a daily basis... Say what ever your ignorant 12 year old mouth wants to but your still a little shit talking behind his computer and were actual people who do this as a job... What more do I need to say honestly??? I may be a tad drunk but fuck it I'm in whistler for 3 weeks for free because I did what you say??? Filmed and worked my way to this point.... /end second rant :)

According to op's previous threads....he owns a gopro, now if your dumbass theories are true prove to us and create an edit using that equipment that is up to this sort of par....


and since your an annoying dike I know you will say "If I could film Tom Wallisch I could" so heres a video with plenty of shots that require no outside talent (lifestyle/landscape shots)



Lastly keep in mind that gopro's are maybe a percent of the difficulty most other cameras would be. And honestly I don't think this thread should and your account should be deleted because of the ridiculous concept. You mine as well quit skiing considering your "opinion"

Okay taking a photo is pretty easy, so you can compare it to you taking a video of you sticking pins and needles up your asshole. But taking pictures =/= ski filming, it is more like: Advanced photographers = Top ski filmers

I rarely chime in on NS, but feel obligated to say something here... If you say nothing, the OP is just a dude ranting nonsense to himself. And it goes no further than that. Why entice his limited scope of what how fundamental hard work is to any type of success. His parent's have clearly have failed to teach him that...

If I've learned anything from working in a this field, it is that time does wonderful things to lazy people who think that they know it all. Talent and a good work ethic are absolutely pivotal to any sort of creative success. OP, pull your head out of the sand. You are making yourself look really unintelligent.

how could anyone make an edit before t31 and a glidecam? everyone who has posted in this thread has no respect for anyone who filmed before them, and all the pro equipment. it is alot easier now than 10 years ago...
we used to MAKE custom camera handles, tried to make follow cams smooth, i have edited on REAL linear reel machines, only to have todays "pros" say it was filmed on a potato, and not as good as theirs.... looks like the only thing that hasnt changed in the filming game is respect.

Over rated? NO, they are underrated. Even if you had a good camera and a good editing software and you would know how to use them it won't guarantee a good edit. One of the most important things here are creativity and some kind of unexplainable talent. It's like making art or music, even if you have good technique, you will need inspiration and sense of art to create a masterpiece.

This is a great thread because it raised a great point. No, it's not that ski filmers are overrated. It's that media consumers assume that because they developed a third-grade level to recognize patterns that all they have to do is recreate those patterns, and then, they too could do that. This is foolish because the part of the equation that's vastly overlooked is time and effort. Sure, if you had the large sum of money it takes to create content, then yes, you too could probably "edit" a cool ski film. But still, probably not, because talent, while important, grows with experience and experience comes from work and work requires effort and effort is not something you do when you create a thread bashing the professional lives of others.

Filming is an art, people who are good at painting make it look stupid easy, but when you try and draw a happy little tree, it looks like you shit on a piece of paper from ten feet up. My point is that skilled filmers/photographers make something very difficult, look very easy

If anything ski filmers are under rated. its people like you that just piss this community off. My buddy jake films and you can ask anyone that knows the kid that he has talent. not only do you need talent to do this kind of job but you need passion too. It takes absurd amounts of time to do everything that a filmer does. and as for making edits, if it were that easy every edit on here would be a masterpiece. theres a reason peoples edits stand out more than others.

Really good ski edits are an art form, just like any film. The effort and decision making put into every shot takes it to a much higher level than what anything OP is trying to make.

This thread is rich. That anyone could agree and say making a top level edit or video is an easy thing to do is ridiculous. All the things people mentioned about difficulty and talent acquired are good. But I didn't see anywhere that it was mentioned about the pressure of not messing up the shot. Someone tries something for hours, days even and finally gets it. You better hope you shot it perfectly.

Also. Watch this video. I'm willing to bet theres a few people who've owned this camera who didn't know some of the stuff he talks about.

I think that video production, no matter the content is one of the most intricate and complex forms of artistic expression. Making a quality video incorporates so many vital elements and ingredients. It requires technical mastery in both video and audio, physical effort, storytelling, the ability to think from another person's perspective, and most of all a creative and artistic eye. If any one of these elements is sub-par, the video will appear non-professional and people won't like it. Creating a good video, no matter the content requires the producer to combine so many elements that work together to create the final piece.To dismiss action sports filmers as non-talented is absurd.

I got a chance to watch abe kislevitz edit this summer at CoC and it's insane how much goes into his edits. He gets so many different shots and watching him edit was wayyyyyy above me. What he does with premiere pro and after effects takes years to learn how to do, and I could guarantee that you couldn't do what he does with the computers.

BTW: He makes all the visual and sound effects himself, how he does it is beyond me.
