Ski "filmers" are over rated.

I just feel like filming any action sport is to easy of a " career " it doesn't really take talent you just follow a guy in the air til he lands. Fill it with b footage of trees and nature and shit for skiing or snowboarding, if it is bmx or skating fill it with streets and city life you have an edit. The only thing these " filmers " have going for them is that their mommy and daddy bought them the best equipment (splice) so they can get the best pretty shots. Anyone can make edits it doesn't take much, just a lot of money to spend on the best equipment. As far as talent goes you don't need any as long as the shots are super digital hd.

no im calling him out, his edits are so so. I could make the same edits if i had the same equipment and the same talents of riders to film.

ok lets go over what a filmer does, white balance, focus, follow object, then put it on the computer add music. Easy.

HAHAHA that's the stupidest thing I've heard all week. Camera equipment is a lot like ski equipment. It may look cool if it's expensive, but it certainly does not make you a better photographer or skier.

Riddle me this: If it's so easy to be as good as, say, eheath, why does he stand out so much?

Not true... you need to know how to color correct and shit of the like. That takes at least a season or two, from what I hear.

Have you ever used a glide cam and nice equipment. I used it for the first time this summer and it is quite hard to ski while making sure you are getting the skier in the frame. Glidecams can be tricky with the swivel handle.

There's also the different angles to film from. Some filmers and photographers go through some rough shit to get good shots especially in the bc.

Most of the follow cams my crew gets are to shaky to use. I don't know how pro filmers can get their shots so smooth. And putting together a good/ creative edit to music is more time consuming then you think. I have mad respect for all filmers out there.

I kind of agree. a bit. sorta.

I always watch edits from big names and think "I could easily film and edit this". it's practically the only aspect of skiing where I can watch the high calibre shit and think that I could do that if given the chance.

I've only ever made one 30 second edit in my life too, from 5 minutes of footage and a shitty camera.

Really.... Is that honestly your thoughts... Let me give you an idea of the average day of a professional action sports film-maker... I'll just use myself and today... I am currently in Whistler as one of 6 filmmakers invited by GoPro to compete in a film competition for the Crankworx Mountainbike festival and am the sole filmer in a crew of 5 invited athletes... Today I hiked a couple miles... biked around 150000 vertical feet down whistlers finest (I race DH so trail difficulty didn't come into play) and that probably ended up being about 15 miles of total trail length... I was constantly working with equipment and stabilizers that take more time to understand and work with than you probably have devoted to anything in your bullshit excuse of a life... I was out for a good 10 hours today working my ass off and had the time of my life doing it... The amount of talent it takes is ridiculous... There are hundreds if not thousands of reasons why very few people get to the true point of professionalism, its incredibly tough and frustrating and there is without a doubt a certain eye you have to have to create amazing content... Now to address your other bullshit... Any good filmer spends hours working out that perfect B-reel to portray something that may add extra emotion and worth to the edit, not just shooting some trees and nature shit you ignorant fuck... Oh and I'd like too add the fact that I personally and just about every professional I know and work with funded their own career... I have spent thousands of dollars of my own to pay for what has now put me in a position where I am lucky enough to go to the places I do and work with the people I get to... I would like to address your blind comment "Anyone can make edits it doesnt take much, just a lot of money to spend on the best equipment" with this edit I included in my post that I shot with my old busted t2i on a full setup that didnt even break a grand in terms of value... Anyone who actually works in the actions sports industry will rip your ignorant ass to pieces... Please just stop... /End Rant

But I kinda a agree. All of these points you guys brought up are not that great. Finding good angles. That requires standing where you get the coolest POV. And color and editing effects. I could learn a whole editing program in a week if I tried.

Now, I give a lot more props to people to it in the ski community because I love what they take the time to produce.( I will admit its time consuming)
But all of these other people are like " man, I am such a hipster and shit cause I go around take pics of stuff and filming interesting people and stuff" is what I have a problem with. /rant

Select angle, select lens (and know why you are selecting it), decide if you will be using any filters/ad ons to the lens, set up the audio/mic, set shutter speed, set aperture, set ISO (and make sure the previous three are compatible while getting a depth of field you are happy with), set up the white balance, choose values for sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color tone (for t3i, differs on some other cameras), keep the rider in focus, keep it smooth while matching the speed of the rider (for follow cams), export to computer, color correct, color grade, fix audio issues, choose song (that isn't crappy like 90% of what people use), export in a format that will upload well without losing quality (involves knowing quite a bit about video formats, codecs, bitrates etc.)

There's actually quite a bit more but I'm really bored.

I'd like to think I've spent a lot time filming skiing over the last couple seasons and I'm still learning new things every time I go out or fire up my editing software. The guys I look up to got that good because they put in a ton of effort. End of story.

Yeah but it isnt that hard. It is really basic shit, it is just like taking photos, but add in you have to make in edit.

Okay....so by this theory if we gave you and let's say eheath or stept a t3i and took you to the same mountain with the same pros.....you would produce a just as good, if not better edit than them? I really want to try this out....I garentee that you will not.
