Park skiing on epic powder days?

I see a lot of edits and videos in which people seem to be only riding the park on what looks like to be awesome powder days. Why is that? Wouldn't you want to ski epic powder that you only get every once in while, than ski park which is there always? Maybe i am just biased because we don't get to many epic powder days in New Mexico so we have to take advantage of every single one. But it just seems weird to me that people would ski only park on epic powder days.

Thats what happens to me. I go try to ski powder. Fail miserably. Go back to the park. Continue to fail miserably.

Unfortunately I'm going to be doing that quite a few times this year when I'm back in the northwest. I'm coming off a blown knee and in December through February I will able to ski, but probably won't have enough confidence or strength in my knee to do anything more than cruise groomed runs and hit rails.

I live in lower Michigan near Detroit: the choice is made for me. We haven't had a powder day at my local mountain, much less an "epic" powder day in two years now...

Center-mounted 80mm underfoot park skis arent always the greatest for that deep pow. But still, some people cant ski it while others can

On an epic pow day, it should be snowing faster than the park crew can dig it out, or there is too much snow and digging it out involves hours of pushing snow and reshapjng everything

I tried this one year. Retore my knee on a flat rail, next year just stuck to groomers and played a little in the trees. Enjoyed plenty of pow days.

If you have a good park crew they will close all of the buried features and go ride pow all day.

Not everyone has backcountry safety equipment. I don't have any but I still enjoy skiing pow when its there, however I do have days when I'm just not feeling it for safety measures so I'll head to the park instead.

Im coming back after an acl reconstruction. How did you find hitting the pow? Im more pow than park and have been wondering what you were able to get back to first?Also how long after your op did you manage to get back to freeride...

powder day in minnesota for me. 9 am i am at the hill, 9:15 I am the only one at the park digging out the fucking jump line. 12-2 pm, powder jump landings for dayz.

my mum has blown both her acls and skis with knee braces the whole time cos shes like old and stuff, she refuses to ski except on pow days if that answers you question, i would advise against wetter/heavier powder days though

If its good pow, then I can. However the 6 inches on top of crud where I'm getting kicked around and hitting things I can't see under the snow doesn't sound good for my knee. Rails are consistent and prett low impact if you hit them right

LOL @ everyone downvoting the comments about people defending skiing park on a powder day.

Who even cares? Let them ski the park. Nobody ever makes a thread saying "Why the hell do people ski the mountain when they can ski the park." I've seen at least 5 threads on this same topic.

The closest thing to epic pow we got was in 2009 when we got 5 ft. of snow in 3 days. Us Southern Californians aren't so blessed.

I dont think that the park is very fun on a pow day cuz too much snow slows you down and gets piled up on features if its snowing hard

Yeah the people who do that are dumb! I mean I have taken a couple park runs on pow days it's not usually worth it! There are not very many pow days.. You should take advantage of them

There are a lot of kids on here with brain aids.

I understand the whole good, more for me aspect and "you don't get pow" Yet, people who stay in the park on pow day shouldn't be taken seriously. If you stay in the park on pow day and come on here and try and seriously comment you should note that I'll remember you and I'll ridicule anything you say.

in Colorado the powder is tracked out within an hour or two, so why not ski park.

in Jackson you have more like half the day to ski good powder and even longer if you're really going off the beaten path for it, but a lot of times they don't even open their park

the perfect park powder day is with about 2" of fresh. any more and it will slow you down and get tracked out/sloppy, but just a little bit of soft snow goes a long way on the landings. <3

I live at a small east coast mountain that lacks gnarly terrain. I ski all the glades and steep runs in the morning with fresh tracks. After that, im stuck with park. But it isnt to bad, my mountain doesnt groom the landings on pow days, so you can huck shit into the powder.

rather than letting people do what they want to have fun, we need to be angry at them, and wish that they were out helping everything get tracked out faster.. that's much more agreeable right?

Fuck this.

That said...I skiied 3 days in Vail this year. Almost all of it was in exact optimal conditions you describe. And I guess that wasn't bad I was happy that I had something to turn in. To be honest considering it was Vail and a flat ass crappy mountain mountain you might actually have a point about too much snow potentially slowing one down.

But go huck off the cornice at Kwood when there is only 2inches of fresh on top of the ice/hard pack and see if thats enough to help out the landing. It won't be.
