Rant about pushy parents

I went for a ski at my local fridge the other week and didn't realise but there was practice going on for a comp the next day. The atmosphere was pretty serious, people were doing stretches at the top of the slope (very serious stuff) and then there was a dad who was shouting at his son telling him to 270 on to a rail and the son was saying he couldn't and looked like he was about to cry and didn't seem to be enjoying it at all, found it all rather ridiculous. Kids should just be enjoying their skiing and not be forced to do it by pushy parents just because they think their kid will get in the olympics or whatever.

Thats crazy, Ive never seen that kind of thing in freeskiing before, but it deffinately shouldn't be happening. I remember playing baseball when i was a little kid and seeing stuff like that (my parents weren't doing it though) and it just seemed awful, it didn't make it fun for anyone. That poor kid is going to grow up thinking that this is just another sport like that, and he may not ever really get to experience it for the amazing thing that it is.

Sounds like some racing parents to me.  Parents should be supportive, but never pushy like that.  Leave that up to a coach or friend who can encourage without being an ass.  Everyone comes along at their own speed.  Seem some parents who were never worth a shit themselves always want to live vicariously through their kid.  :-(

this haha, im not saying i wish i had pushy parents but i wish my parents loved skiing as much as me. This way they would have introduced me to skiing earlier. I just started skiing in general this year so i had to learn all the fundamentals before I stepped into the park. Also i would've had something to do in the winter all those years i was snowboarding instead of skiing since I wasn't aware of how much more fun i had while skiing.

I compete and one of my buddy's dad is just like that, telling him what to do, scolding him when he messes up, etc. This guy really didn't understand what our comps are about, having a good time, pushing yourself, throwing down, and being stoked. I really hope it will stay that way after the olympics, I mean I'll always feel that way about it, but hopefully others will too.

Same here. My dad is always like: Why do you always want to ski park? You should be spending some time in the glades, steeps, and you'll end up killing yourself in the park.

You never got pushed by your dad to be better. He was spending time with his kid. Some times it takes a little extra effort to reach yours goals. Someone pushing you sport or not.

This is like every-day shit if you go to American youth sporting events.

I remember growing up and playing baseball as a 10 year old... the parents of some of the kids on that team just made them feel like shit. I was having fun, because my parents just encouraged me to. the other kids weren't because it was more of a chore at that point.

Same thing happened growing up with soccer (erm, football) where parents would just freak the fuck out if their kids weren't scoring goals. "YOU'RE PLAYING MY SON AS A DEFENDER? WHY? HE'S THE BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM!" (which is why he was probably playing stopper, idiot)

I was at a skatepark the other day that has baseball fields next to it and a little kid game was going on and all I could hear were dads shouting at their kids telling them to do better. Pretty sad if you ask me.

I work at an ice rink as an ice maintenance tech (person that drives the Zamboni) and about once a week i have to kick people out for being obnoxious and yelling at coaches ,refs and me. the kids playing hockey are a solid 8 years old, i mean there pushing your kids to grow and develop but like parents are ridiculous sometimes

I race for my High School and one kid on my team is pushed so hard by his dad and his mom is just supporting the dad. Literally, they expect the kid to make it to the Olympics for ski racing. The parents have been planning his future for him. On the other hand my parents have been encouraging with short-term, yet easy, goals to accomplish during the day. Also, my mom and dad were, and still are, some of the biggest inspirations to me to ski since I was little and helped me get to where I am, training to become a ski instructor at my local mountain and hopefully work on my park skiing so I can pass that down to future generations.

Besides, I spend a lot of time out of the park whenever there's enough snow cover to ski some glades and steeps.

My dad's old as hell so he skis through the park like a gaper and skips all the features. Also, the park at my home mountain isn't too good.

I played in a golf tournament this past week, and I was at the clubhouse and a very similar thing happened. A kid in "division 2" (decent player group), couldn't have been older than 12, came in after his round of 9, and his dad came out to greet him as he walked in. I was just like alright, he wants to know how he did. So I overhear him asking what his son's score was, and the kid said, very sheepishly, a number in the 50s I think. (very respectable score, especially for his age). The dad proceeds to take him to the corner and I heard him yelling at his kid saying shit like "you're never gonna be on the tour with that awful score!" and "That's absolutely terrible! How could you possibly suck that bad!" The kid was fucking bawling his eyes out and his dad just kept yelling at him. I was appalled. People like that are just absolute scum.

Stretching is a prerequisite to all sports ! Skiing is a rigorous activity! Especially with landings, impacts, miscalculations, and crashes! Any wise athlete is going to accell much further and recover much quicker with routine muscle training and stretches for flexibility! But I don't believe this is the main point of OP! Point is the negative reaction of said a ahole dad , instead of positive motivation and coaching ! It's s shame to see these parents in any type of competition ! Truth is every parent thinks their kid is the next big thing! Less than .01 % of these parents or kids actually know what intense dedication and training is required to even have a shot at making a career out pro sport , let alone any discipline in skiing !

I hate it when parents have that attitude. Like when parents are trying to make their kid into a football star and make them run and lift weights all the time, like let your kid have a good childhood.

If you DONT think stretching is helpful, the entire medical and sports world feels bad for you, son. Seriously every single major sport everyone stretches, its backed up by years of research and practice and is shown to greatly reduce your chance of injury. Note I said reduce, not eliminate. Before you do any skiing you should at least do a full set of lower body stretches.

Have you even been to a skatepark and seen anyone doing stretches? To me skiing isn't a serious sport like football or whatever, its a chilled sport like skating.

You obviously haven't read any research in the last 10 years. I personally would not recommend static stretching before OR after skiing, as it diminishes the elasticity in your muscles and ligaments. Dynamic stretching is a very different thing, and I would definitely recommend that before skiing.

According to recent research, and what many elite athletes are doing, you are just flat out wrong. I suggest you go and read up on the science behind stretching.
