Free shit Friday 3.O'Neill

I had the pleasure of spending yesterday afternoon & evening talking business (over beers and burgers, of course) with the totally awesome Jimmy Adams from O'Neill. We chatted about skateboarding, we chatted about the Olympics, we chatted about winter plans and backyard setups, but most importantly, we chatted about the Newschoolers x O'Neill collab jacket (which is looking like the sickest piece of product we've ever put out).

The one question we kept asking ourselves though was this -- how do we promote the jacket in a way that is actually enjoyable to consume and that gets people pumped on the gear. Obviously the end goal is to pus the product, but we want to do it in a way that doesn't piss you guys off, but gets you excited to see the next ad / banner / contest / etc.

What we're giving away:

A 2012/2013 Newschoolers x O'Neill jacket, size large.

Two ways to enter the random draw:

1) Convince us, using video (Youtube, Instagram, Vine, Newschoolers, etc.) that you deserve the jacket. Super vague, but that's the point -- we want you to get creative.

2) Tell us how you'd like to see Newschoolers x O'Neill jacket promoted. Do you want contests? Banner ads? Pre-roll videos? Do you want to see member generated content in the promo? Do you want a totally animated video? You get the point -- tell us what you want, no matter what that may be.

To spread it on NS definitely make banners, I pay more attention to those than the ads before the videos. Facebook is also a great place, just do a "share and like this post to win this NS x O'Neill jacket". Both of those is probably your best bet. Just don't do an ad before the videos.

I hope to someday have as much swag as all you blue/green/red/orange names <3

2. Newschoolers is all about community, I know bands will make music videos/posters that incorporate video/pictures of fans collaborated into one final project, I think that overall promoting the overall community along with a unique skiing segment & the product would end up with positive results.

Ok so the idea of promoting a product is generaly associated strictly with humans in mind with exceptions such as cat food, but still dosnt catter to other genres of buyers. What im trying to say here is that this jacket should not only apeal only to skiiers but to many ranges of people. Convince everyone that they need this jacket. Sell it as a pillow case, a dog bed, a place mat, a hamsters bedding, and anything else you can think of. The only time iv ever seen this promotional idea is in Doctor suesses' "The Lorax", in which the antagonist is selling a "thneed", as a multi use sweater which is what needs to be done in this instance because the product was so popular that they ran out of materials to make it! To say the least it worked phenominally.Infact it worked so well that I dont see why no one has used this idea since. Create a video ad that has two options: one would be to watch the usual 11 second video ad, and the other would be a simple ski game like gnarshmallow with the rider wearing that jacket that the user would have to complete a level on to continue to the video. Run the ad a lot, people could do tricks and people could compete for high scores with their ns brethren. Hopefully that makes sense, but you can kind of see where I'm going with this.

Also put the jacket on the shredsauce dude.

I think banner ads are great, as long as they are different about everytime. Seeing the same picture or the same clip over and over again eventually just makes me never want to see the jacket again.
Also, ads with cool pictures of various NS members could potentially be pretty rad.

To promote the jacket I'd suggest:
-Banner ads on the net or ads in magazines
-Videos of some kind
-Maybe a contest where someone could win one of the jackets

....or just slapping it on a hot babe, taking pictures and uploading them on the internet

Thank you RaphKP for being the first semi-intelligent NS member to respond to this. 

Mousseau thank you for reminding me that the ski industry is complete bullshit and unless you know someone who you party with all the time and is the shit, you will not get ahead.  This "contest" is flawed in so many ways that I can only hope that some NS members will read this and learn something about how real professions work.

You are asking people to enter a "random drawing" by "convincing you" or giving you free advice on how your company should be run.

Well O'neill sucks, nobody should buy your product, but banner ads are the best promotional idea so add me to your random drawing so that I have an equal chance to win this jacket as kids who are giving you all the knowledge about this subject that they know.

And please stop convincing kids into giving you free advice about how to promote your company. I agree that it is a great way to find out what types of promotions people respond to more, but you are tricking unknowing kids into giving you much more than you give them back.  If you are asking for this type of consumer feedback then please respect them and offer multiple prizes for certain "best of" categories.

P.S. Oh yeah I was also drunk when I wrote this so please only judge me as much as you judge the OP..

a) It's not a contest and I didn't use the word contest in my original post. If I created the same thread with zero prizing, I'm sure people would still take the time to give their feedback.

b) If you don't think I've worked my ass off to get where I am today, then give me a call. I've messaged you my cell phone number and would gladly spend a couple hours explaining what I've had to do to get where I am today.

c) Everything we do is based on what our members want. And why is that? Because that's what our members want!

d) I really don't see it as tricking them into doing anything. We're asking them for their thoughts so that we can give them what they want. Take the first FSF for example, where I adjusted my social media posting to better cater to the content people want to see. The second one asked members who we should interview, which we've done two of so far and have another 10 in the hopper -- these were all picked solely by the members... and hey, so were the questions! I'm trying to eliminate the "bro" factor in ski media and give the power back to the people.

e) There is no "best" in my opinion. I want to know what every single member wants to see. I want to reward you for taking the time to write down your thoughts -- whether you be a 12 year old weekend warrior or a 24 year old marketing manager. Every opinion counts. And I am giving away multiple rewards! So far I've shipped out 20+ packages from FSFs, and plan on giving away at least 2-3 other super nice, brand new, O'Neill products -- on top of the brand new jacket.

Im thinking that giving away stickers to anyone who buys the jacket will get people to buy it. Either that, or make a contest out of it: anyone who buys a jacket will be entered in a contest to win either something big or a shit load of cool gear.

And use this jacket as a way to advertise Newschoolers. I think it would be cool to make a promo vid and incorporate user generated stuff, and show off what Newschoolers is.

Make it the main page cover page behind all the videos and pictures. Or make it the picture of the day(with a Ns member wearing it). Just a quick idea, I wanna make a video but probably won't get around to it.

you still havent answered the question though. So if i made some sick video as my way of trying to promote this jacket, and some other kid simply posted "you should make a commercial for it", then we both would have the same chance at winning it?

How about a long-haired, spoiled looking brat on a computer. He's obviously up to no good. Splice would be good for this role. Then, get some upstanding members of the community, say Skiierman and AR6, arm them with blunt objects, lock them in the room, and film the results. in the end skiierman can write out "O'NEILL X NS COLLAB- KILL ALL NOOBS 2013" in blood

That's what I was thinking, if I work super hard on this video idea I have, I don't want to have the same chance of someone giving advice that's been said six times. But if it's a raffle I could simply say the same thing that everyone else is saying like, "Make the guy in shredsauce wear the jacket." Or, "Bannder ads are cool.

Think the drawing is stupid? Then don't participate. It's pretty damned simple. These guys run plenty of contests, so just mellow on out and wait for a contest to roll around and bust your ass on that.

Got your panties in a wad because you really want the jacket? There are two options. A) Buy it. B) Contribute something and hope you're lucky.

Quit hating on the guys who run the site you obviously use and love.

See the thing is, I don't really want the jacket. I'm just trying to point out the flaws in his free shit Friday giveaways. If he actually wants good ideas, and truly cares about what kids have to say, then he should make a "drawing" into a "contest" so kids will actually work hard, and get creative. If its 100% random, no one is going to try.

To say "you get out what you put in" is a little bit of a stretch, but i think it works here

Never thought people would get so worked up about free stuff! If you don't want to participate, don't click the thread -- it's really that simple.

It's a draw. The only way to win the jacket is if your post # gets randomly generated, and when I check it, I can see that you've done one of the two options.

I also give away bonus stuff. For example, I really liked Mr.Huck's and .Leo's videos, so I'm going to hook them up with some prizing -- but they would still be eligible to win the jacket. I also really liked five of the promotion suggestions, so they're getting a package as well -- but they would still be eligible to win the jacket.

I do this on an everyday basis across all the entire website. If I see an awesome member contributing positively to the site, whether it be in the forums, news, videos, pictures, etc... they are going to get rewarded!

Elaborating on the shred sauce contest idea. But because there will be loads of people rocking this jacket this winter. Make 3 limited color ways that the top 3 "shred saucers" could win that way people get way more amped on the contest... Originality goes a long way when people choose outerwear so It could definitely bring a lot of people to be one of the only ones with a certain colorway.. Just a thought

Great idea, rather un feasible... But working with this concept of a global collaboration you could send one jacket to newschoolers members around the world to show and capture them wearing the jacket, lifestyle shots etc. obviously it is not winter across the world so it would portray all seasons and take the jacket through it paces while also bringing everyone together. Still some loose ends on the idea though...
