Totally not a voting ring... Here's an example of a voting ring --

I create a NS Cult / email chain / facebook group / subreddit, and whenever I post a link, every member of the group automatically gives it an upvote, with the assumption that everyone else will do the same when they post something themselves...

How is this any different from someone sharing a video on facebook and saying "check it out, give it a like"? S'not cheating.

This can of worms has been opened in the past. There's always the discussion of whether or not content should be allowed in the forums or if it should always be solely kept in its relevant content category. Videos have fallen under this for years... people want to get more exposure on their edit so they used to post it in the forums.

Now that videos get a lot of homepage play, it seems to have died down.

The real issue is that the forums are where the most hardcore NSers lurk constantly, and when you're in there its very easy to forget there is anything else on the site. So its a pool of people to get a nice seed on your piece of content.

I've always felt that the distinction should be that only conversation is allowed in the forums, not promotion. So if there's a video/photo/article in the forums then its only because there is something about that which requires a larger discussion than the comment system can handle.

I've never won this argument though, as a lot of people seem to like having the occasional piece of content in the forums. So you're right, its grey and its debatable. Its not cheating though, as its encouraged to promote your content to your friends a la social media.
