As far as I know Windows Movie Maker is the only free one for Windows that is even decent. That being said, it's still pretty awful. When I used to use it, I would have projects just break fairly often then I would have to start over. It also supports very few video formats and the editing it can do is very limited.

It sounds like you don't want to torrent so I think Movie Maker is your best option right now.

the old windows movie maker was actually usable for stacking clips one after the other, that's about it but it could do it well, last time I tried to use wmm they had updated it to some complete piece of shit, same as how they ruined office.
