I know I can't be the only one who gets a headache from listening to techno, and I'm not super into rap / hip hop either. I listen to almost exclusively classic rock, ranging from Pink Floyd to Motley Crue to the Ramones, and I just wish there was something fresh that still carried its roots in quality lyrics, bitchin guitar solos, and heavy drums. I feel like I'm living in a generation of people who have lost sight of what it means to Rock On, and that saddens me. If you know of any bands that keep The Metal alive, please share them here.
and you should give some of that other music a chance even if its not your typical rock music sound or dont fully like it because it will give you a better in tune ness with the world around you assuming you dont live in a village in south america and have used ns once
You need to stop measuring things to the "classics" and then you will find that rock is alive and well with some great sounds coming out. It is clearly different than the classics, but that is a testament to how music evolves and changes.
Keep your mind open, go out and enjoy what is currently out.
Some of my favorites:
The Trews - the first song starts out slow but builds very nicely:
Nowhere near unknown, but The Black Keys have impressed me with virtually everything I have listened to from them going back into their earlier years.
And to try and say that songs like Little Black Submarine don't kick ass would be absurd:
Great post, SkierX! I dont want you guys to think that I'm just complaining about how new music totally sucks and everyone should go back in time with me, because even I am growing a little weary of the classics. I made this thread in the hopes that people could introduce me to some new rock bands that are still kicking, and so far you have delivered. if anyone has any other suggestions please post it up. I am open minded to a lot of new things, but at the end of the day there is Metal in my blood so I like things that keep in touch with that. The Black Keys (Who I have listened to a bit and really like) and the Trews (Who I haven't listened to until now but seem pretty good) are great examples of what I'm searching for.
Rural Alberta Advantage, Black Tide(shockwave was awesome, heard their album after that sucked) Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros, Black Angels, Chuck Ragan/Hot Water Music.
No mention of Jack White yet? In my opinion, Mr. White has managed to keep to the heart of "classic" rock and blues, but giving it a new, modern sound. Pretty much my favourite musician who is still making music.
Not his most recent work (his solo album that is), but in my opinion "The Consolers of Lonely" by The Raconteurs is one of the better rock albums to come out in the past 20 years. And it's opinion, so please don't start an argument with me, just listen to it and enjoy it, damn it!
Other than The Black Keys, those are just pop-metal bands. I don't mind listening to The Offspring every now and again but they're really a 90's/early 00's band. That's the type of music that 30 year olds that never left 1998 listen to. That's not the type of rock OP is looking for.
Wow. I'm so sorry I deeply offended you. Was that really necessary man? You're lucky I don't give a fuck about what you think. I've added plenty to this forum in other threads. I don't listen to this type of music much so I don't have a lot to offer and that which I would've suggested has already been posted: The Black Keys, Jack White and Tame Impala.
The "Classic Rock" genre just isn't nearly as popular as it once was. Go to the rock category in iTunes - 6 of the top 10 albums are by older bands and not a single one of the top 10 songs are by a new band.
I am more than familiar with the bands you posted. I went through a phase in middle school. Look, all I'm trying to say is that those bands are in a very different genre than the genre OP is looking for. That is all.
the mars volta, modest mouse, bloc party, brand new, crime in stereo (they did just break up somewhat recently), thrice, glassjaw, cursive, the war on drugs, the national, of montreal, rural alberta advantage, MASTODON, mew, apparatjik, explosions in the sky, the gaslight anthem.....op you obviously live under a rock
