Ok so in the last year Ive had an urge to start golfing. Having never golfed a hole in my life, I turned to my cousin, who is a competive college golfer. I golfed my first 9 holes today and I had a blast. I shot a 5 on a par 3 hole and was super stoked on that. But in general I hit very poorly obviously. But I am interested in getting a beginner set of clubs and Im not sure where to start. Ebay? Craigslist? Sporting store? What brands should I be looking for? Thanks

Anything Taylormade is good. You can find some older drivers and irons for pretty cheap. Probably could get a whole set for $300.

Well I was looking around for something cheap and something for beginners and I found this(sorry no clicky on mobile)

I noticed it doesnt come with a wedge, but despite them obviously not being "quality" clubs, Im still learning would these be a fit?

If you plan on going out quite a bit and want to really improve your game I might recommend a higher quality set but if it's more of a casual thing these would be just fine for a beginner.

Look towards a set of used or cheap new.

I mean I was looking into the Taylor Made burner irons. They are pretty cheap and hit really well. I just felt that the rocketballz irons were a better fit for me.

I'd go to a Golfsmith or similar golf store, and buy some used name brand clubs. Get some Ping, Taylormade, Nike, or Callaway clubs that are 5 years old or so. 2ndswing.com might have some good deals on their site too.

It also doesn't come with a wedge, so Id pick one up also, but I have $100 worth of dicks sporting goods gift cards, thats why Im looking there.

The thing about graphite shafts is that it's a wrapped shaft so each iron has a slightly different flex while metal shafts all have a consistant flex. Not really a make or break factor but just something to think about.

Go to a local golf pro and find some clubs that feel "right" make sure to play with them a couple holes don't just go on the range and then make sure you give him a price maximum and details on your golf game brand names don't matter till you get pretty good

Check out the Ping Eye's or Eye 2's. They're older, but a very nice set that you can get for rather cheap now. Basically just a classic design that's really popular, and in my opinion irons haven't really advanced that much in comparison with drivers/hybrids, which would make more sense to get newer.

I'd also recommend going with a grip that works well for you.. shitty grips are the worst.

Or also just check out the thrift store/pawn shop..especially as a beginner you really don't need a full set so you can pick and choose what you want based on your budget. Hell, screw the long irons and just get some sweet woods/hybrids, they're so much easier to hit and golf is a bitch of a game so ya might as well make it easy on yourself..I love my 7-wood. It's also a pretty expensive game so you could save yourself some dollas that way, especially if you end up hating it/not playing as much as you think, which I've seen people do before..

The problem with those clubs is, your just going to end up getting new ones soon anyway. Go ahead and spend a few extra $ and get something used and something that will last you a little longer. www.globalgolf.com is a great website for used clubs. I have used them several times and have been very happy. Its just like anything else in life, you get what you pay for, so dont buy shitty shitty clubs for your first set, youll just have to upgrade once you start getting a little better.

If you plan on continuing to golf for a while do yourself a favor and just buy some halfway decent clubs that will last you for a long time. You don't have to buy the best of the best obviously but try to get the nicest clubs you can within the highest budget you can afford. You'll be happy later when you have nicer clubs and don't have to keep rotating through them according to your ability level. Also a lot of the technology nowadays makes nice clubs easier to hit for beginners

Instead of buying super nice clubs you should get decent beginner set and then use the extra cash for swing lessons with pros. Engraving a good swing in the beginning will help you so much with your game.

if you're interested in buying a set i have (3-pw irons, taylormade driver r7) ill sell it to you for a good price.

Irons are Tommy Armour Morph 3-PW. they are in used shape of course but really easy to hit.
3-5 irons are cavity backs
6-8 are a half cavity
9-PW are blades.

if you dont know much about why they do this, you can do some research or PM and I'll let you know.

Driver: Taylormade r7. used condition as well. no headcover
really nice club to hit. im thinking i want to upgrade though.

i dont have an extra putter right now but you can find one of those easily.

I'm thinking about 120 shipped for all that, but feel free to throw me an offer.


Since you are a beginner, I wouldn't suggest my other iron set, but I do have some Mizuno MP-30's. they aren't as much of a game improvement iron set so you may want to stay away from them for now.

Yeah man, check around for used sets and you can easily put together a phenomenal set for sub 200 if you look hard enough. Stay away from those box sets at dicks sporting goods. You can get MUCH better quality clubs for a better price. Those things are quite frankly junk. I'm a gear junkie and know way more than I need to, and buy/sell ridiculous amounts of equipment because I like tinkering. I know where to find deals and all that. This is some good advice. I got a set of Ping I2s a few years back because I needed an easy club to hit.


Good grips is important. Its hard to find them on used clubs. Regripping is very expensive. So if you buy used clubs and regrip them definitely buy name brand clubs not crap.

I can vouch for the I2's, great club for a beginner, huge face and pretty offset. Super forgiving club and you can pick them up for really cheap.
