During my ban for posting ellie's tits on a few threads (/claim) I had some time to think. And I decided me and my roommate should document our adventures. We both like writing, and hes a journalism major. We are going to live in Spokane, where i used to live and hes lived all his life, and we think it could be prime for exploring.

Most of the BC in northern Idaho and Northeastern Washington is pretty untouched. People go through some gates at Schweitzer, but other than that its pretty limited. Last winter we did some sledding and found pillow lines, big lines, and unique peaks that haven't been skied and documented. We already have a trip on the powder highway planned, and it seems like it would be a good opportunity to blog ourbe stories, some pics, and maybe a few videos.

But we don't want to try without at least a small audience. Would you like to see this? our plan is to bring a different attitude to the BC-- less patagonia trend whores, more based on fun with the same level safety. We don't want to take ourselves too seriously, but we'd rather not die in the process.

Our blog would include planning, costs, obstacles, snow conditions, obviously skiing and pics of it, and maybe interviews with some of the people we meet (there are a lot of interesting folk in the inland northwest).

So if you would want to see this, let me know. Any suggestions are welcome, and if you live anywhere from Sandpoint to Pullman and would want to be part of this, we are always open.

Why do you want to know if others would be interested in it? You're going to do the bc skiing and what not regardless right? And creating a blog is free. I can understand asking for input on what kinds of things people like to see but the idea of a blog is to be showing the world or a certain something through your own perspective.

yeah, i guess we are trying to decide to what level we are going to be putting out media. I think we can blog about it no matter what, but we're also trying to decide if we should invest the time and money in making bi-weekly to monthly videos, and how many quality pictures we would aim to get. It would change how often and how long we would be in the bc, and what we did. But talking to my roomie the blog is pretty much a go no matter what.

Ah I see. Good call. A quick bit of advice when it comes to blogs and creating original content, don't shoot for the moon. Initially it will seem easy to do new stuff 3,4 or 5 times a week but as the weeks and months go on you'll find yourself repeating the same content. Best to set out a structure of minimum updates ahead of time then if you have time to do more no one is going to be upset.

by blog, i would mean blog on ns. Not create my own. Having the platform already in place is what really encouraged us to think of this.

You guys got rid of the blog and went to all news. Not a terrible idea since the blog section probably wasn't so popular, but the idea of a blog where you have a collection of all the things you are doing is more worthwhile to the person doing the posting. Posting photos and videos in their proper sections are great, but what about the times when you want to tell a story with your photos. Does the News section really make sense for this?

Does listing every post under editorial really make sense? Especially if it's just a casual update or something you are super stoked on?

I like that forcing the use of editorial makes us think a bit more about what we are writing and who will be viewing it, but it limits the "doing for yourself" vibe that the blog section used to have.

I'm curious to know where exactly you found good backcountry terrain in northeastern WA. I thought Sherman Pass was pretty much it. I'd actually be really interested in joining you guys of I still lived at home. I grew up north of Spokanistan and skied Red.

i'd definitely watch/follow it. i don't think the blogging/pictures will be too hard because if you've never done anything like that you'll see writing about a sick day you had produces a pretty good feeling, makes you pretty much relive your day. the videos would be the only thing you'd have to spend some extended time on, maybe get a 3rd person to help with the filming?

Quite a bit off 4th of july pass which is kind of near kellogg. Theres a good network of sled trails and a ton of mini golf lines, and there are a few higher, steeper peaks. We also talked to the former owner of Peak Adventures which was a cat operation in Cataldo. He showed my roommate maps and pics, and said the mining and logging trails he used would still be fine to sled up. We've also seen some good hike/skin to options near lookout pass on the Montana side of the border, and the selkirks above priest lake and near schweitzer offer some real big mtn lines. Parking at Thompson Pass also offers some gnarly shit, but we've never heard of or seen anyone skiing there, just a bunch of slednecks. We might even try a cascade trip if we can save the $.

The inland NW has a lot of good BC, but most of it is in idaho. We might try to find some lines near loup loup or across from 49, but thats kind of unknown. Which is what makes us so interested, that what we want to do will be completely fresh and original. Interior BC, Colorado, Utah and the Sierra's are all popular BC areas. The excitement is not knowing what exactly we're getting into.

Then perhaps another category since neither "feature" or "opinion" seem to fit when I feel like documenting how excited I was to finally do a rail. It would simply go something like. "OMFG skied a rail today. Felt so good, then I fell 15 times." Then probably have a photo or two from the day.

Then the next day I would probably post about how excited I was to be able to do it again and that I'm feeling more confident.

I used to get word of encouragement for this sort of thing, now I don't post cause it feels very far from news.

agreed. Some of our adventures will have longer, feature length articles with lots o pics, but sometimes it might be a short paragraph with 6 or 7 pics. Doesn't really seem feature worthy.

Ya, some rocks and road gaps on Moscow mountain with tones of potential to build, also some cool cliff drops in Pullman. Not as much big mountain bc stuff but definitely plenty for a fun weekend. Now I am so stoked for winter!

Good idea -- it's definitely something I'll look into.

Maybe we even just change the term "News" to "Words" and we can add a blog category under that? I'm just rambling here, but let me know what you guys think.

Either way, I want to read what you guys are writing!

when i skied at schweitzer i met a surprising number of people from Moscow and Pullman. I always thought Brundage was closer.

Please :) I miss my NS blog. It was a lovely compilation of things I didn't mind my parents or future employers reading. No joke, I had an interviewer at a ski company compliment me on what I had to say. It's a pretty solid tool if you use it.



In regards to anyone saying you only do things for approval on the internet... A lot of people who take the effort to write a blog have a personal and a public blog. I printed out my personal one from my first year of college. It's around 300 pages. I just started reading it again, and it's sooooo much more enjoyable than going through some old photos. Anyone who feels like writing absolutely should. But... it is fun when you can share the thoughts and stories which are appropriate. Telling a story is a tallent. You're either good at it, or you have to work really hard to become decent at it.

I go to school in Pullman and am really looking to ski some more BC this coming year in north eastern washington or northern Idaho. I normally ski the BC at Alpental and Crystal but really dont know my way around Northern Idaho and Washington, it would be great if you guys could hit me up.
