X Games Detroit

So now that Los Angeles is no longer going to host the X Games there is a huge push by Metro Detroiters to get it moved there. As much as I would love to be able to see X Games live in person I really don't think the city can handle it. Don't get me wrong, I love Detroit, but the city can't even handle their own fireworks without a shooting, stabbing, or other violent crime. A lot of people have argued against me saying things about when we hosted the Superbowl, World Series, DEMF/Movement, and the Belle Isle Grand Prix. As cool as it would be to have X Games a 30 minute drive from my parents home, I really don't believe it is in X Games best interest. No one wants to go visit Detroit, and Superbowl XL was proof being that it was one of the lowest attended Superbowls in the last 20 years.

Any thoughts on X Games in Detroit?

I will give them credit for a lot of time, money, and effort involved though

No way, Showtime was in that commercial. The guy who owns that place is ridiculous. He used to play for the lions in the 80s and has some pretty intense defending his turf stories.

Well detroit is already in the shitter economically so whatever happens happens. If it does end coming here and costs us whatever, thats just another million of debt were already in. But hoefully it will be of benefit.

Austin has an awsome BMX and skate scene, but not much else. Chicago would be an all around good choice, but I feel sorry for detroit. And why the hell is charlotte on this list??

Ya me too since the skate and bmx scene is growing so rapidly here in the south. That would have just propelled it plus all the rednecks would come watch the dirt bikes and rally car races.

You clearly don't visit Detroit much if you're so "disturbed." Yeah, there are a lot of shitty neighborhoods and burned out buildings, but for the most part, the city is pretty awesome. Lots of fun things to do/see and it's not unsafe unless you're wandering around in the wrong place at night alone and acting scared. Most crime isn't random, not to mention people don't get shot in the middle of the day downtown in crowded areas. They just don't. I don't see any particular reason other than the stereotype created by the general public to keep the X Games out of Detroit, though I'm sort of indifferent about the whole thing. However, the amount of ignorance being tossed around in this thread about the city is more "disturbing" than people being upset it didn't come here. Detroit is a great city with a (well deserved) bad reputation, but it will come back.

I'm not disturbed with the city, I'm disturbed with the fact that it's such an enigma to half the people on the #xg2d site as to why we aren't getting it. Detroit holds a certain reputation that people really and truly believe to the fullest. That's why most people from the west side of the state would rather associate with Chicago than Detroit, at least the many people I've talked too anyway.

Dude did their bid video to get the X games really consist of showing how run down and deteriorated detroit is, and then showing people riding dirtbikes and ATV's in the street like somehow that's not fucking illigal, and then to top it off a bunch of idiots lighting off fireworks in the streets with their hands?!

It's starting to make sense why Detroit is in pieces.

Actually, not even close. The packard plant and michigan central station were the only run down places in that video. Look up pics of some of the streets where almost every house has been arson-ed to the ground so scrappers could have an easier time getting the metal out. That's the real run down detroit.

Didnt a bunch of people just get shot at the fireworks? Pretty sure goku was there, and would know more.

As far as Detroit being for the most part a safe town, I believe you are mistaken. There are safe parts of town but they are definatley not the majority. I would not want to be walking around alone in 90% of the city.

Lol I work in Detroit and have a lot of friends who live there. Goku grew up in Walled Lake and goes to Northern. I bet he knows aaaalllll about the city. One of the facilities I work at is on Jefferson (no, not Grosse Pointe Jefferson), and the other is on E Warren. I pretty regularly have to drive from either of those places to the heart of downtown to get to the DHS office. I've taken plenty of drives through the "hood." I know Detroit. I know the good areas and the bad. It's not as scary as people make it out to be. Are there certain areas I wouldn't like to even drive through? Of course, but you'll find those in Chicago and New York too. I've never been approached, threatened, or anything like that. The places I work aren't even in downtown downtown. Real downtown, with all the bars, the stadiums, the casinos, restaurants, etc, is awesome. So many people out on the weekends walking around, and sports games are incredibly fun. People who are afraid of going downtown are fucking stupid. Midtown is cool too. I spent two years down there going to school at the WSU med campus/DMC. Also not scary.

As for the fireworks, I haven't really read anything about it, but yeah, I heard someone got shot. People get shot in Detroit all the time. 99% of the time it isn't random. You're not gonna get shot driving through Detroit unless you're looking for trouble or are an idiot. Stay out of the bad neighborhoods and go downtown. You wouldn't visit Chicago to party and then cruise through the ghetto there, either, so why would Detroit be any different.

What reason does anyone have to walk down random ass residential neighborhoods anyway regardless of the city? Those are the only real dangerous areas in Detroit and there is no reason for outsiders to be in those areas to begin with. If you look for trouble in detroit, it will find you. If your idea of a good time is going out with friends to bars, sports games, or events like that, you'll be perfectly fine.

Thank you. I don't know why it is so hard for people to grasp this concept. Detroit isn't dangerous until you willingly go into the dangerous areas.

Well I'm going to ignore that first part mostly except never once did I say I was scared of Detroit or say it was the scariest place on Earth. I actually went to OU for 2 years and lived in Pontiac...you want to talk about a city... and I have spent quite a bit of time down in Detroit because my mom worked for the DMC growing up and she still works there weekly as DMC owns her doctors office in Walled Lake.

Despite how "not scared" or "how comfortable" you may be down there, it is very very unlikely that you will be able convince someone from not in the Metro Detroit to change their opinions about the city, trying to tell them to visit it will get you laughed at unless they are a fan of Detroit sports. Broaden your horizons. Ask someone from Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, or even Lansing what they think about the city. It's rather eye opening. Most people born in the U.P associate themselves with Chicago more than Detroit because of the reputation to be honest.Then find someone from out of state and see how they feel. How the city is portrayed by the media vs how it actually is is very different, but unfortunately it does have its similarities. Someone above posted asking why they would want to the edit using all the footage showing how shitty Detroit is. It's pretty obvious they were trying to use that to their advantage with what the mass media coverage tells about the city to promote it as "hardcore", "extreme", or "on the edge"

So it's not necessarily about how "safe" the city is, it's the fact that people have thought this way for so long that they don't want to change their minds.

Iniatially, I was disappointed to hear that Detroit (and Chicago) didnt get it, but after some thought I believe this is a good thing for both Detroit and action sports.  XGames have gotten so far from what they orginally stood for and is now just a big marketing event to generate money for ESPN.  It basically turned into what it stood against in the beginning.  And if you really think about it ESPN doesnt seem to care much about action sports since they hardly mention them outside of their usual coverage of "mainstream" sports.

Bottomline, XGames didnt want Detroit and Detroit doesnt need the XGames.  I am excited to hear that Detroit will be moving forward with a TBD summer event that will hopefully bring action sports back to its roots and away from corporate influence.  If they pull it off, it will be a big win for the soul of Detroit that ppl can point to as a positive turning point for the city.

My take on Detroit: I'm born and raised in Fresno, California and think Detroit is a rathole city that is too burnt out to bounce back. That's how bad Detroit's reputation is outside of Michigan. And hell, maybe it has a bad rep with much of Michigan.

I am one to take a lot of pride in the place I'm from (not that I'm from Detroit, michigan in general) But pride aside, Detroit has a lot to offer as far as fun goes, it's a mecca for sports, music, entertainment and food. There's a lot of history to it and the biggest names in the world go to Detroit, it's not just run down houses and bankruptcy. That's a whole different side of the city.

Obviously I'm wrong. I'm making a point that that is the reputation Detroit has with much of the country. Perhaps you missed that I said I'm from Fresno, California. It's pretty close to the Detroit of California (we'll let Stockton hold that title) and we just came off of a 19% unemployment rate.

As far as te culture in Detroit goes... The problem is that Chicago has a lot more of it, so if someone is going to vacation in the Midwest, it's gonna be Chicago. Tourism shouldn't be an industry Detroit is worried about, but it should be worried about building jobs and maintaining the large corporations that are there and drawing new corporations there.

You think they could afford to hire all the security and pay to have all of the venues prepared and get everything ready with a deficit of $350 million?
Really?

Austin is a great place to have it. I visited and its dope as fuck - lots of night life and prepared venues in a large area that doesn't looking depressing as dick to people traveling to see the X-games.
