Investing in stocks

If you want a good website to practice on, marketwatch.com is nice. I used it in a business class last year where you can play stock market "games" against other people. The features in it are nice and I'd imagine it would get you prepared for the real deal

Correct. "Annualized return" is a standard measure in finance.

sure its a standard measure but basing it off the performance of one stock in the such a short time frame is like doing a survey with only one person, the results will be skewed and almost completely meaningless.

Curious as to what your portfolio is up for the year right now, percentage wise? I got that diversity too and am wondering in total, how much your choices in the variance bring your returns above the market trend. My guesses aren't too educated, but rather are from more graph analysis and a little background info. (+~19%)

Just skimmed through the thread so far so, OP, forgive me if you said this and I missed it, but how much capital are you starting out with? If you can scrape together 3 grand, I would strongly recommend getting a mutual fund and designating it as your Roth IRA. It's important to start that early and get as close to the annual $5,500 max every year. That's how I started in college and I've maxed it every year since. I'd recommend vanguard. Their funds historically have great performance and low fees. As far as individual stocks go, diversification is key. Make sure you have a nice mix of small, mid, and large cap stocks. I have about 1/3 of my money in mutual funds and the other 2/3 split among about 12stocks and a few ETFs. For research, I use www.morningstar.com . For $180 a year you get premium stock/bond/fund analysis and portfolio management tools but they offer quite a few articles and services for free. I do most of my trading through a brokerage account with my bank (usaa) and it's relatively cheap. To echo what others have said, long term is the most reliable way to make money. I started investing in college (I'm 26 now) and my portfolio is worth just over $120K. I usually make no more than 2 trades per month and 3/4 of my transactions are buying more shares. Stay away from commodities futures, options trading, day trading, and penny stocks. Don't get obsessed if your stock is down a few points and overreact. Check it every few days. Reinvest your dividends, pay your taxes, and set yourself up for the future. Good luck.

Just started reading this a few days ago. I'm really enjoying it so far and I can even see it helping me with some of my finance classes in the coming semesters. Hopefully I can get through it pretty soon, read over some of the topics that need I brushing up on and start doing some research and get my money into some equities after this summer.
