My Dad's Bittersweet Business Opportunity.

DISCLAIMER: I am I 15 year old kid, I am a sophomore in high school. I would not call myself a spoiled bitchbrat, and my parents don't give me everything I want on a silver platter. LOLOLOL HE'S A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD KID HAHAHAHHA. Okay. Now it's out of your system.

Here we go. My dad was laid off from his position as an executive for a large pharmaceutical company due to budget cuts, and he was left with a year with pay to find a job. That time is running out, and he is most likely getting an offer to be the CEO of a developing pharmaceutical company. Awesome, right? But here's the kicker: It is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. FLORIDA. Of all places. My mom will not spend summers in florida, as it is much too hot for her. But mother preferences aside, I am a high elevation, winter/mountain kind of guy. I ski and longboard in my free time, and without those things, I don't have anything to do. I understand that I could learn to surf etc. But along with 90% of this site, I would be left with a hollowness without skiing. Not to mention my summer equivalent being longboarding (freeride/downhill, requiring hills), and Florida being as flat as my first girlfriend's chest.

I know some of you will say things like "Wow man you're so dramatic, skiing and skating aren't even important" To me, those things are all I have to get away from the stress in my life, and to genuinely have a good time. Call me over dramatic but it's true.
I have talked about this extensively with my parents, and I have been given 3 options.

Option 1: My dad moves to florida, we buy a cheaper house in Maine (where I am now), my mom lives in florida and summers in Maine, and I go to boarding school in Maine or somewhere else in New England. For me, this is the most attractive option, as my options for schools include some great schools near big ski mountains and such. The tradeoff would be significantly less time with my family.

Option 2: Everyone moves to florida. I will have to sacrifice skiing and skating but will have more time with my family. I would like to avoid this as much as possible as I believe I would be very unhappy living in florida. I would spend a lot more time with my family though.

Option 3: My mom and I stay in Maine and my dad lives in florida and visits us for about 60 days every year. My dad would greatly lose touch with us, and that would suck since we're really close now. It would be less complicated but it would kind of separate him from us. My mom would also be greatly burdened as I have a 4 year old brother and me, and she would pretty much be a single mom.

So I guess I made this thread to get help with my decision, to get an outside opinion. I know I'm not the only variable here. My mom doesn't want to summer in florida due to the heat, and my dad will obviously want us to be as close as possible. I just want a decision that will be the best for everyone. Thanks for any input guys.

TL;DR
MY dad might become CEO of a company in florida, I don't want to go to florida. I could go to boarding school while my family moves to florida, or stay in Maine but leave my Mom to take care of my 4 year old brother and me alone, or move to florida and leave all that I have learned to love to do.

Skiing doesnt last forever. It seems like the only thing to you now but go with your family. I used to ski 70 days a year. I love skiing. I might be around it alot but I literally actually skied 4 days all year... There are other things that are way more fun and more important in the long run.

yes, I understand your point. My point is, his perception of stress is different than everybody else. Who is anybody to tell him what he should or should not feel?

People go away to school all the time, why is this kid getting the guilt trip? Does everybody who studies away from home ruining their family? When I was in the navy I saw my parents

I moved to boca raton, fl ( 30 minutes from ft lauderdale) freshman year ( 3 years ago) from Ontario , Canada because of my dads job. It sucks balls but you just gotta deal with it

Florida is awesome. I was born on the GC and it was awesome. Beach everyday. And every girl there is hot just about, but there's fuck tons of old people and winterbirds.

Honestly, your dad has got an amazing offer and frankly you and your mother are holding him back from providing for you guys. Not trying to sound like a dick (I know I am sounding like one either way), but with the presumed salary your dad will be receiving you'll be able to go on awesome ski trips every year. I know that little amount might not be able to satisfy your cravings, but it's still something. I ski under 5 days every year, so you guys got it good!

I sympathize for you however for having to give up the things you love, I've been there before. Best of luck to you and your family.

If you really wanna keep skiing the next 3 years before you leave for college, do a ski academy or boarding school. Living in florida wouldn't be THAT bad and who knows, you might find something that you have a passion for living there. No skiing (maybe some ski trips?) and youd get to do a ton of water sports and skateboard.

I know you don't mean to come off as a spoiled brat, but I grew up with my dad in the military. I went to three high schools. One in california, one in alabama, and one in colorado. I moved 9 times across country from the time i started elementary school until the time i finished high school. Not once did I complain. No matter how shitty the place we lived. I moved from sunny california to bum fuck alabama, I didnt want to leave the mountains, the beaches, the amazing skate scene, my friends. But my whole family did. The fact your mom "cant handle the summer" in florida is honestly kind of gross. Your mom, who is married to your dad is willing to sacrifice three months a year away from the person she is supposed to love the most because of the weather? Like what the fuck? And i understand your argument that you dont want to leave the mountains and skiing, but yo ucan long board in fuckign florida. You may not like the place but it is your family. I just don't see why you would wanna sacrifice time with your family because you don't wanna be away from the mountains.

Idk maybe we just have different values but I think sticking around your family is more important than fucking skiing. And your longbaording argument is just stupid. You can longboard anywhere.

Move to Florida, you haven't told us where in Florida, but it could potentially be a really good time. Worst case scenario, you give it a shot for a year, and if you truly don't like it, you take up option 1.

Think of it proportionally. I haven't been exposed to the stress that you have made blatantly clear that you have. So my brain doesn't even know what "real stress" is. So the same amount is generated by smaller things due to a lack of comparison. So if you think of what stressed you out in your sophomore year, and then think of that today, you realize that you made a bigger deal out of it back then. That's because you've adapted to stress and built tolerance over the years. I haven't, so I'm more likely to get stressed at 15-year old things than you.

thousands of kids in the US go to boarding school every year, you get like a 6 week break generally plus some other breaks, where you could go live with dad. you would have a great time at a Maine boarding school, gould, kents hill, cva etc.

If you want a list of schools that are near mountains and involve skiing that put school over skiing here they are.

Not ranked in order of academic excellence
1. Holderness
2. New Hampton
3. Kimball Union Academy.
4. Gould(Sort of)
5. Tilton (sort of)
6. Brewster (sort of)
7. Berkshire
8. Deerfield
9. St. Pauls

The top 2 have free ski teams, as does Gould. I am not sure about the rest, but I know they have club teams as well. And if you have friends in the area you can always join them on the weekends.

OP needs to realize that there's more important things in life than not being able to ski all winter.

unless you're of an age to move out, you have no options here. i know you're young, probably lived a very sheltered/priviledged life and don't really have any knowledge about the goings on in the real world but at the end of the day, family is all you have. you're problems of not being able to ski in florida are really miniscule compared to what others are dealing with in america.

move to florida, find another hobby and take a ski trip once a year.

If you can, check out Florida before decision time, it might not be that bad. I would say try option 1 for a semester and see if it doesn't harm your family relations. If option 1 does mess up your family, then just sack up and move to Florida.

I couldn't live without my mountain sports, so if it were me, I would continue living in maine, and ski and longboard. (in my case bike)

For the family aspect of this, just don't fuck up your life at boarding school, and you'll graduate and continue having an amazing relationship with your parents (if it is already)

My dad was in the navy my whole childhood and i moved all the time. You'll make new friends, and you will still find ways to ski.

Move to Florida and convince your parents to pay for coc/windells for a week or two, and add in ski trips over Christmas and Presidents' Day weekend, until you go to college

Wow, haven't checked on NS in while. So my dad had taken the job, with an effective starting date to be the 26th of August. The contract was signed around the 10th. I was going to move down with him, my mom, and my brother, and go to a really nice-looking public school in Cypress Bay. Then, around August 15th, after my dad had gone down to check out the offices and meet the employees/management team, he gets an email saying that they didn't need him anymore, and that the contract was now void. So naturally, he's in the process of suing the company for breach of employee agreement and the odds are in his favor. There's more to the story, I just don't feel like posting everything about this on an internet forum. So I was gonna move down the florida and take your advice, but these Sunshine State assholes decided it was a better idea to just pretend like it never happened. Wahoo.

while florida is perhaps the worst thing to possibly happen to planet earth, I say deal with the next 3-4 years in florida with your family and then go to college in the mountains and spend the rest of your life in the mountains. family comes first, especially when they support you, and it will be really shitty for your dad to take this job as a financial necessity and suddenly enter a life of spending only half the year with his family and traveling all the way to maine when he wants to see his wife and son.

enjoy the beach for a few years and then move on if you desire. i highly suggest learning how to kiteboard if you're gonna be living down there. it will easily keep you occupied for a few years

By the way OP, I had to live in Orlando for a year and a half because of my dad relocating jobs as well. Not going to lie the weather was the shittiest fucking shit, but I sacked up and dealt with it. And guess what? Now I live in Colorado. My point is that you're 15 years old and you have the rest of your life to ski and live where you want. Changing scenes for a couple years and gaining a different perspective won't be the worst thing in the world for you. The mountains aren't going anywhere. Besides, think of what your dad has been going through. The dude lost his job and now has to move to fucking Florida. He doesn't have an option and is trying to provide for your family. Now's the time to be a supportive son and put your shit on the back burner for a bit.
