The biggest problem isn't that there are too many pussies out there. The problem is that the bullies are insecure because their parents suck at parenting. Bullying is nothing more than a defensive reaction to bury your insecurities.

Part of the problem in my eyes is the police mentality spreading through our schools, to put it simply, kids can't stand up any more or face much harsher consequences then the aggressor. For instance, at my old highschool, if you get in a fight, no matter who started it, doesn't matter if you were jumped or really fought back, all individuals are automatically suspended.

The biggest problem isn't that people are pussies now, it's that they have literally 0 adult support when it comes to the types of bullying that occur now, and the fact that the media glorifies killing yourself. Parents don't know how to internet and neglect to tell their kids (whose majority of interactions outside of school are digital now) how and what to behave and expect. Kids think that the internet is like real life and that things said on the internet under the guise of anonymity (or even facebook) are personal attacks on their character. Since that interactions is nearly constant with the invention of smartphones and public blogs with a comment system, kids are being attacked all day, every day, which they feel is personal, and their parents lend 0 support because they are technologically retarded, so they end up killing themselves.

And then the media tells you get a parade if you kill yourself and celebrities will visit your house and say nice things about you on stage. It's disgusting.

You and I (presumably, if you remember a time when you didn't have internet...) had the luxury of the character building "bullying at lunch or in the hallways" harassment which was fleeting, temporary, and from which there was respite at the end of the day when you went home or hung out with friends. If your parents were abusive, there's a good chance you would've killed yourself too, but more importantly, the point is that you had time for yourself and to reflect, not a constant barrage of harassment.

Inb4 "should just turn off he internet". That's what smart people do high/middle schoolers are not smart.

I think we forget how cruel and uncensored kids can be though. Thinking back I can remember people telling other kids like "You're fat ugly and disgusting, you're family is poor and your stupid so you're life is gonna be shit"... Like sure you might build character but realistically no one should have to go through that, theres other ways to build character which out a strong chance of destroying self confidence.

But, depending on the age of the member, things were drastically different.

Growing up, there were no cell phones and no internet until high school. While in high school, cell phones were only able to make phone calls and that's it. I'd say things are a bit different now, wouldn't you?

Sure, but the internet started getting big in the early 2000's, so even 19 year olds would have only been 6 or so when the internet started becoming relevant and would have been exposed to it for the majority of their childhoods.

And having a cell phone that only made calls doesn't increase the difficulty of your childhood enough for you to be able to talk about "kids these days" as if the way they grow up is so incredibly different from you

Well, i don't know for sure, but i'm assuming that you idiots think it's a good thing and builds character because it toughens you up or something? If this is the case then, taking it to the next logical step, we should make sexual and physical abuse of children a recommended practice because it also toughens them up. If you are going to argue that words do no real damage, then wouldn't real, physical damage do even more for character development and toughening up than verbal damage? I'm going to assume that not even you people are moronic enough to think that parents abusing their children is good for the child in the long run.

To argue that words to no damage to a person at that age is just stupid, when you're a little kid and you hear everyday how worthless you are it doesn't make you tough, it just destroys any self esteem you had and you eventually start believing the things you are getting told because you don't know any better.

its not black and white, there definitely is a point where it becomes too much, or too little. complete sheltering or the worst kinds of verbal/physical abuse are obviously bad for kids, or anyone. and adults abusing kids is much different than kids "abusing" other kids.

learning to deal with real life/human nature at a young age is most definitely valuable. people have and always will be mean, there will always be bullies, and that starts at an extremely young age, pretty much starts as soon as you get into school and are around other kids.

bullying from other kids isnt bad at a young age, you get called names, made fun of if your weird, whatever, if it gets extremely out of hand and or constant, then sure i think there is a limit and someone needs to step in and stop it. but other than that, all its doing is preparing you for a couple years down the road and pretty much the rest of your life.

bullying hasnt gotten worse, if anything its gotten better, we do so much now to attempt to prevent it, yet kids are killing themselves over it now more than ever. we have kids killing themselves over fucking text messages...

this is what i think..

kids are so damn sheltered now, any time someone makes fun of another kid its like the anti bullying squad is called in and a team is sent in to investigate. people are fucking crazy about preventing it. and they do, but eventually, kids get freedom, they do shit outside of school, outside of adult supervision, where they dont have the constant pampering of a teacher/parent. and when some kid who grew up, never having to stand up to himself, not learning how to eget made fun of and get over it, not let shit get to him etc.. gets thrown into a situation with no adults around, and gets "bullied" especially if its around the puberty age where everyone is mentally and emotionally fucked, and kids are much smarter than than they were when they were in 1st grade, and know how to be much more cruel and how to really hurt someone, its no wonder they cant deal with it, flip shit and kill themselves. you have a kid going through puberty with the emotional strength/wisdom of a 6 year old. what the fuck do you expect?

i saw bullying like crazy when i was in grade school, JH, and HS, but i NEVER heard of someone killing themselves, not once in my 12 years. and now in my same town with pretty much the same population its always been, i hear of at least one or two a year. yet now we have all this anti bullying shit in place.

i was bullied myself, pretty much constantly from 1st-4th grade, and i will say it definitely was good for me, i was a weird kid, super overly shy, could hardly function around other kids, and i just had to sack up, defend myself, get over my problem and learn how to be around other people and deal with shit, it made me a better person for sure.

So many of these posts are straight up retarded. I was bullied so much when I was young. Literally lost so much of my childhood..... for what? So some kid who's has some shitty parents can feel great about themselves? Those are years I can never get back, years I had to learn not to be a child. I had to grow up early to deal with that shit...... and NOBODY should have to go through that. Every kid should have the right to just be a kid.

Do you even know the issues I have to fucking deal with as an adult now because of that shit? The social anxiety, the confidence issues, trusting someone. Such a small thing that has such a destructive effect in the long run, and nobody should have to deal with that shit. I have developed ways to deal with it and move forward but why should I have to?

Bullying isn't just getting embarresed every once and a while..... or getting teased from time to time. It is the complete destruction of every ounce of self confidence you have by pure intimidation, and its fucking bullshit to think that is good for a person in any form at all. I don't give a fuck if people on NS are going to judge me, or make fun of me.... but you guys really need to lose some ignorance, and just learn decent human beings.

Everyone who argues bullying is terrible for children's self esteem and stuff, nah.bullying gives you two options, either stand up for yourself and get the bullying to stop, or shut up and put up. I will say bullying a child with mental retardation or similar extreme cases is totally unacceptable. However, if you are a totally normal kid and get bullied, and let it keep happening without standing up for yourself, you are setting yourself up to be a submissive and passive adult.

I dont think it is bullying or anti bullying... to be honest I think america is starting to take a turn towards shitty fucking parenting and a crminal system that will put someone in jail for throwing a punch. With the stories most of us have heard from our dads and grandpas if you had beef with someone you went to the corner lot or the back of the school and fought it out. Today if someone is bullying you we go to our parents and they blow the shit up. going to the others parents and to the principles of the school. now im not saying violence is the answer, because by no means it is but if we werent so fast to letting mommy and daddy deal with our problems and learned to deal with them on our own i think bullying would decline. if you think about it bullying hasnt changed its only our attitude towards bullying that has changed and it is now easy to find evidence from the internet or text messages that shows people are being bullied.

I remember getting bullied when I was younger because of my first name and it drove me crazy. I hated the kid (I still hate him with a passion) and would come home every day from school crying because of the torment he put me though. What did my parents tell me? Just ignore him and he'll stop. Well, he didn't stop and one day on the bus ride home from school I had enough. When we got off the bus he started making fun of me again and I freaked out. I chased him down the street with my oversized backpack on and viola case in one arm and when he finally tripped on someone's driveway, I was on top of him and using my viola case like a fucking weapon. I didn't give a shit that I knocked two of his teeth out, broke his nose or anything like that. Once I was done, I cried and cried and cried, the entire way home. Why? Because I realized I had busted my viola on that fucker and my parents were going to be super pissed about what I had done and rightfully so, they were.

People no matter what age they are going to be picked on. It happens here in my office every day and there's nothing you can do about it. But at some point, we need to take a step back and realize that EVERYONE has feelings.

I was also bullied as a kid. What I did is ignored them and found my own friends. If they started talking I would ignore them and if it got worse I had friends to back me up.

Oh, I had my own friends as well. Though in my case this kid bullied everyone, was also much larger than most of us and this is elementary I'm talking about. Not high school or whatever.

In any event, I couldnt imagine growing up in this decade and getting bullied. With facebook and twitter or what have you, you cant escape it. It's terrible really.
