I got a new kayak about a week ago and finally took 'er out for an early morning assault on a new spot... All I can say it TITTAYS.

mmccarthy14bought a 6'6" ugly stick the other day caught two small mouth yesterday in an hour. I kinda fucked up though. I bought the rod whre it's supposed to use 10-25 lb line and I only use 6-8 lb fireline usually. Does it really make that big of a difference?
.Hugo.is that a medium heavy power? Despite that you should be fine, those guidelines for line weight really arent that big of a deal. Id watch out though fireline is known to wear grooves into line guides, especially on lower quality rods. Those grooves can fray or knick your line which will weaken it and may lead to breaking and losing fish.
mmccarthy14what kind of line do u suggest? I use a reel tha holds 6 8 10. and yea its a medium heavy power
Huck_NorrisFor that I'd probably say ~20lb braid will be good for just about anything. It's a moderate rod so it'll be good for cranks and other vibration baits for sure. I'd rock Sunline SX1 on that in a heartbeat. It'll still be well within diameter guidelines, have higher strength and less elasticity and will allow you to use that whole rod and cast farther with the braid IMO.
I don't fuck with the "superlines" like fireline and nanofil anymore. They can be really spotty and have strange fray issues once you've had them on for a while and braid just casts better.
.Hugo.What he said. Braid is the easiest to handle and cast. Just do not overspool your reel, it will be a mess. Also make sure you tie a good knot as braid is the most likely line to slip. I like the modifies imoroved clinch with the palomar a very close second
Ive never tried sx1 but I actually just ordered some. If its half as good as their fluorocarbon ill be happy.
Huck_NorrisI really like it. No coatings to instantly wear off and bleach out like power pro or 832 so it stays consistent in feel and dark green. PP is more limp but it's also much thicker and more rope/cloth like. SX1 is my fave so far by a long shot. I also spray the shit out of it with that KVD pixie jizz. I use it in 10 & 30lb and would not hesitate to recommend it.
Someday I'd like to try that toray braid for frogs to keep the guide noise down but damn. Spendy stuff!
shitpoopwas rowing......left my worm in the water. fish took my rod. RIP UGLY STIK
fuckin pissed
mmccarthy14Ready to blow another 60 on another? I boght the rod and reel seperate so ine was like 75
.frenchycould be a lot worse than 60 bucks dude! thats on the cheap side
probably gonna add a baitcaster setup to my rapidly growing arsenal this week. thinkin of a 6'6 or 7ft rod. Whats a nice baitcast reel for 75 or less? thats at cabelas...
rod arsenal is starting to take out a big chunk of cash lol
.Hugo.For that price, id personally go shimano of pflueger.
My brother has a shimano caius and that thing casts a mile, way farther than my $200 reels haha. Cabelas has the pflueger president on sale for 80 and its normally 150
.frenchyword thanks a bunch dude. You think it's hard to learn how to use a baitcaster? I'll put on pretty heavy braid so i dont get rat nests as often lol
trying to plan a trip so I can break my personal record, probably need canoe/kayaks tho because not many places you can catch a 7+ pounder from shore this time of year hahaha.
.Hugo.Nah its not hard at all, but I guess for some people it may be. Like you said start out using heavier braid, thats the easiest to cast. Then try some thicker mono maybe because thats not too hard either. Where it gets tricky is with fluorocarbon. That can be a pain in the ass
.frenchyidk if i'll use fluoro to be honest... Might just have fluoro on my spin reels. We'll see how much i like baitcast though. Do you have a baitcast for every type of line? like braid, mono, fluoro?
.Hugo.I only use fluoro and braid and I try to avoid fluoro just because it can be a pain on baitcasters, and there are a ton of northern around here and theyll slice through it like butter. But I will use it on the really clear lakes for jigs and texas rigging.
But I always use fluoro on my spinning rods 100% of the time
.frenchyHow come? I have one of my rods setup on 50lb braid and that's what I catch a lot of my 4+lb bass on
.Hugo.I assume thats about the fluoro on spinning? I mainly fish very clear lakes. Braid is too easy to see underwater when its clear and u only use spinning rods for finesse presentations. Braid wont allow as good of action and if the fish can see and feel a big thick braid they will nit be fooled
.frenchyahhhh I see, i dont fish many clear lakes at all. but i've caught a couple decent smallys this year on my 50lb braid in pretty clear river water hahaha.
mmccarthy14Probs gonna take a ride up to bass pro shop in hooksett nh this weekend. Any suggestions on bait I should buy/general equipment. I have line, rod, reel, swivels, kind of need more hooks. I've found hooks on the smaller side work better than bigger where I fish. I'm probably gonna look for pitbosses too since frenchy suggested them to me.
mmccarthy14Also, I have some cranks but I never seem to catch anything with them :/

Huck_NorrisI've got some great videos right here that will show you how to set up and dial in a baitcaster as well as how to cast it without birds nesting like a mofo.
These guys have awesome tutorials btw.
how to set up
http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/adjust-baitcasting-baitcaster.html
how to cast: Note the feathering of the thumb. HUGE in BC. It allows you to selectively brake so you don't need to use as much internal braking or spool tension and can thus cast farther. Also no line twist like happens in spinning reels.

I'm pretty much all BC reel these days. My finesse reel is a Curado 51E with Abec7 bearings and 10lb SX1 braid. I don't see myself going back to spin except for suuuuper light river tackle or something and even then I'm thinking a pixie might be a good alternative- as twist sucks more in tiny baits.

.frenchyThanks man! I'll look back at this when i get my setup. nobody ever wants to go to cabelas..... fuckers.
Huck_NorrisThey probably know what's good for them! That shit is dangerous.
.frenchyyeah I mean I go around every 2 weeks.... None of my friends are THAT into bass fishing like me so they dont need to spend money there lol.... ffuuuuu
shitpoopwent fishing and caught a free rod! hell yeah
abu garcia reel, and a bekely cherry wood rod
Huck_NorrisMoar story please
Nice haul Hugo!
shitpoopwent fishing at the local lake. I lost my rod here too, lol. So we take out a boat, and first cast i was like "damn. just a big fucking stick." and wiggled my line a bit to shake it off, but as i reeled it it i was like "nooooo way!" and it was a solid 6 6" LL bean rod/reel combo with mono. the reel just needed to be lubed and it was in mint condition in no time! cant believe it was first cast too
seanwhiteI was all set to go fishing this morning, except for my alarm was set for pm not am.... haha fuck, oh well hopefully get out there tomorrow and catch some and get some pics up for you guys
soulskierA few largemouth I caught the other day, somehow made it this far in life without ever fishing soft plastics on texas rigs and I'm already in love
and here's a lion fish the wife caught on our honeymoon a month or so ago in Bermuda
shitpoopdude your such a great fisherman, your wife is a great catch! what bait did you use?
