They're only using the HI virus (modified version) to bind with human T-cells, take over the cell and force it to produce a specific protein which makes them able to kill cancerous cells.
Say this treatment is done to you, yes you now have HIV, but the HIV you have is not the same HIV Magic Johnson has. Magic Johnson's HIV attacks his T cells and destroys his immune system, your genetically modified HIV attacks cancer cells and leaves your healthy T cells alone.
Simple:
Yes you are injected with a virus, but that virus is good for you.
It's the same idea that Botix is derived from a deadly toxin, but people directly injected into themselves for appearances and does not harm them (if done correctly)
No you misunderstood what I was trying to convey. Of course it's a huge scientific achievement. What I meant with "only" was the fact that nothing dangerous was happening with the HIV, it was simply being used as a genetic component which alters T-cells. It could theoretically be done with other viruses which function in a similar way, yet which are unknown to most people because they have no significant meaning in medicine. Thus the fact that a potentially harmful virus is used in this process holds nothing largely within it. Writing from phone and I hope I conveyed my point.
personal treatments are cool but the cost is immense. I haven't watched but I believe the idea is to make the immune system attack cancer cells. this would work well if all cancer cells looked the same on the outside and remained that way. look up provenge.
Nope. With having viruses attack cancer cells (oncolytic gene therapy) the goal is to have the cancer cell express genes transfected by the virus and then said genes cause apoptosis in the cell.
Every time I read about medical treatments being tested now-a-days, my mind is simply blown. Maybe it's because I just didn't hear much about stuff like this when I was younger, but it seems like we are just truly pushing the impossible at such a fast rate now.
The only reason we have HIV anywhere on this thread (or in any discussion about this video, or the video itself for that matter) is because HIV is one of about 5 viral diseases that most journalists have heard of.
ahh that's he alternative. Same issue though, you'd need everything to present the same cell surface characteristics so the virus has something to look for.
