Why should he be ashamed? He went with his gut at the time and wanted to play with the penguins. Obviously things didn't work out, penguins decided to not resign him so he chose another top contender in the east. He's making millions of dollars and on a top contending team, lots to be happy about.

<---- pissed off canucks fan here. Alright so we have lost 3 preseason games already and i am getting very nervous and losing faith in Torts. Tortorella was hired to ignite a spark in our players and bring a new energy to the team, as of thus far i havnt seen much. I understand what he was doing by not coaching the first few games, but instead observing, but honestly he was hired to be yelling and screaming on the bench at Alex elder, burr, the sedins, and kes. The country club atmosphere that has plagued the canucks locker room need to end. There is not first or second lines anymore, its open game and torts needs to have the players fighting for ice time every night. If the sedins arnt hot, we cant play em first line. I like the fact that kassian is playing with the sedins as a two way forward and also to offer protection to the sedins, and i wanna see more of it. As for the new draft prospects i think their all complete pussies and i don['t wanna see em played for at least 4 years. I still cant believe that we traded one of the best up and coming goalies for sum bo horvat kid, its bullshit. Eddie lack has never played a regular season game in the NHL and Luongo is washed up, his glory days ended in game 4 of the bruins series in 2011. He is a arrogant self centered asshole and he bitches way to much about ice time and he thinks that the world revolves around him . looking forward the canucks need to get mentally tough, we need to learn how to play situation hockey. I still remember the glory days of 2011 and we need to learn and rectify the mistakes that we made in 2011. as for david booth, the clown needs to go, booth is the biggest joke in the NHL. We dont need players like booth bringing down our team with all his fucking injuries, on the ice Booth is shit.

Are you ready for the inevitable example of how bad NHL supplemental discipline is everybody? Are you ready?

People are already calling for an 8-10 game suspension for Zack Kassian for this play.

Now, don't get me wrong. He deserves a suspension. But the largest suspension ever handed out to date by Shanahan for a high stick was 2 games. People want TEN for this? Even analysts are saying eight. Reckless, yes, injury on the play, yes, but it was clearly unintentional. He wasn't TRYING to hit Gagne with his stick. There was no intent to injure him. It was just a play where he didn't have control of his stick. So a two to four game suspension seems reasonable to me. But this is the NHL, Kassian isn't an all-star, and Gagne is a skill player, so we all know what's going to end up happening here.

Now for the comparison to what happened in that Leafs game.

In this video we see two intentional axe-swings by Phil Kessel at the ankles of John Scott. Now, Scott is being a huge (literally) prick here, being a useless player going after another team's star. But this is obvious intent to injure. He's trying to take out the guy's ankles. The first one, you can say he reacted out of anger, but the second one he had a few seconds to think about, looked at Scott's ankle, wound up and hacked. He's deliberately trying to injure an opposing player with his stick.

How many games do you think Kessel gets? I'm going to go with zero. Maybe a preseason game that doesn't actually count. He's a star, you see, and the victim was a tough guy journeyman who doesn't really matter.

Can't wait to see if I'm right!

This is the NHL. Hockey players fight. It's literally what happens when you get a bunch of huge, super-strong, and way-too-sober Minnesotans, Canadians and Eastern Europeans together and then proceed give them objects that are easily turned into weapons - even under inadvertent contact.

I mean they give these dudes things that have a shaft, and a blade. That's literally the definition of most medieval weaponry.

then, you give them a giant sweet-ass awesome cup as a trophy if they win? And they get to put their name on it?! Holy shit. I'm surprised the 70's didn't include a lot more epic bloodbaths.

But remember. These guys are ultimately gentlemen (I mean, other than Sean Avery, that is). And because of that, off the ice, they are the least-likely to make the news in comparison to the constant DUI and domestic violence cases you see in the NHL, and NFL... They get their rage and frustration and leave it where it belongs - on the field of battle.

So with that, grow a beard and shut up. Dropping the gloves is here to stay.

some of the best games I've ever seen haven't had fighting, and those that did would have been just as good without.

plus the players really do look like a bunch of hormonal children with anger management issues when they start yelling and fighting and pushing and face washing each other.

fighting in hockey has nothing to do with the equipment.

fighting does not win cups. you can be the most rough team on the ice and never get into a fight.

when you watch a game of hockey that doesn't have a fight do you think "well that was a shitty game"

when you play hockey and don't get into a fight do you not have fun?

this is retarded. I can't believe people can actually argue for fighting in a sport that is just as good without it.

Fighting did at least HELP win cups before the 80's. You don't watch enough old games if you think otherwise. If you're the most rough team on the ice, chances are that there will be fights. Hands down. They didn't call them the Broadstreet Bullies for no reason.

I don't think it's shitty WITHOUT fighting. I just think it's a pretty awesome extra cherry on top when there is.

I have been in a few hockey fights as a teenager. They were fun. When I wasn't fighting during games, it was also fun. This is not relevant.

I didn't make any logic leading towards the correalation between fighting on the ice and domestic violence at home. I was more just playing the tongue-and-cheek thing with that whole entire post.

And these days, when a solid hit can lead to your suspension in this league, wtf are you supposed to do? It's actually MORE LEGAL in hockey, to get into a fight with another player, and punch him right in the face during stopped-play, than it is to level him with an awesome open-ice hit.

Not many fights in this modern-day NHL lead to suspensions... but damn, just about every single hit is under the microscope. So under that, honestly, if I was playing in the NHL today, I'd get into a lot more fights if I could. Especially if my team was down 4 late in a game. At that point, why the fuck not?

There are definitely some games I have watched where a good ol' hockey fight or two would make it all the better. Especially if the score is low or lopsided, the gameplay is slow, or the fans in the arena are obviously bored.

Phase one of my theory is complete: Zack Kassian has been suspended 8 games for his reckless yet accidental play. Who wants to bet that Kessel's intentional one doesn't get half of that?
