its a smart move, people use riots as an excuse to loot and pillage viking-style, wearing masks just makes it that much easier to get away with it. If you walk in a bank wearing a ski-mask, you think people are gonna take it too well? Pretty much the same concept.

and this isn't just for riots. this is for covering your face in any way that conceals your identity in any illegal gathering of people in public.

also if I'm facing 10 years for concealing my identity in a protest, the cops better god damn have the same for concealing theirs. ie the cops you take off all identification numbers and badges and go in full riot gear and commit foul crimes against citizens they're supposed to be protecting. see Toronto G20.

The 10 years is a bit much, but if you show up to a riot with a god damn mask or bandana or whatever, then fuck you. You're only there to cause trouble anonymously and you're a prick.

I agree that the G20 riots got way out of hand in terms of police force, though.

yes 10 years is retarded, I had overlooked that part in my post and I think it is outrageous myself, but the idea of banning masks at protest is founded; nobody has a valid reason to conceal their identity if they're rallying for a cause they believe in

first off, your safety is NEVER at risk in Canada for any protest unless you willingly choose to go to it. Protests are not against the populous, they're against an organization or a government, or Vancouver loosing in the finals. There is no such thing as a protest in Canada where your safety is in danger by anyone at the protests except by the cops who are supposed to be protecting your safety. It's retarded but true.


And many people have very valid reasons for concealing their identity.

the best example that comes to mind is that there are many employers who would fire an employee because they knew they went to a certain protest. this is also retarded but true.

second that comes to mind, if police are using teargas then there's a perfectly valid reason for having at the least a cloth wrapped around your face.


third: we're in fucking Canada. it gets to -30 on a regular basis during the winter in the vast majority of the country. you're telling me if I go to a protest I'm not allowed to wear my neck warmer?? absolutely retarded.



also there is the whole rights issue about having the right to wear whatever I want in public so long as it's not infringing on anyone else. and it's not.

I mean fuck. in Quebec city when the G7 was there there were all sorts of 'undercover' cops whose only job was to incite violence and give the cops an apparent reason to use violence against the crowds. well part of this was them cutting holes in the chain-link fencing. you know what people did?? they would tie wrap the pieces of fencing back up so nobody got hurt on the sharp ends. people are even looking out for your safety in these protests.

then on a related note, I have family in Quebec city who were downhill of the protests and teargas, being heavier than air, would sink down that way and filled their basement where thhe kids slept and such. they couldn't be outside their door even during the daytime because of the teargas. so if they wanted to go to the store and get some milk they'd have to cover their faces. and they could get 10 years for that???

the downvotes but no response to this post just prove that people disagree with what youre saying but don't have any information to educate it or back it up..everything this guy said in this post is true and if you think it's not youre way too naive to be claiming an opinion on the subject..

i can understand the desire for no masks but 10 years is an absurd, politically charged penalty and if you don't think that's true youre not paying any attention to other cases (which is fine, but does mean that your opinion on the subject is considerably less valuable than others')

these issues are a lot more complex (see: G7 etc) than some people would prefer to believe

If you're going to be protesting, stand up for what you believe in and show your face. All those fuck heads destroying shit in the Vancouver riots absolutely deserve hard time for it. There is no excuse to be destroying property that other Canadians paid for.

If some fuck in a balaclava destroyed my car there I'd love to see him go away for ten years.

And the bullshit about keeping yourself warm, wear a toque and a neck warmer. If you can't handle a Canadian chill then you're a baby.

Also those who wear them for religious reasons, well I have zero respect for most religions and I sincerely don't give a shit if you can't wear your mask for Allah or whoever you wear it for.

Alright, first off, I'll admit that I was kind of over the line in trying to demean you like that. I disagree, but it doesn't mean you're an idiot.

But really, valid reasons to conceal your identity? If you're concealing your identity I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume you are a threat. The mask a pretty common denominator in violent protests. You just don't show up somewhere with a god damn mask if you're not looking to cause shit.

Teargas- If tear gas is being used the protest obviously is already out of control and needs to be contained.

Canada is cold, yes, but how often do you see people walking around in winter with bandanas over their face? Like said above, you obviously couldn't walk into a bank with a face mask on. Or even a convenience store. This isn't some new concept.

Peaceful protests happen all the time. Nobody has their face covered.

I just don't share this whole "government is out to get me" mentality that a lot of people seem to have. Yes sometimes protests get out of hand on both the police and citizen side. But if a simple law like "you can't wear a mask" is going to make people think twice about their mob mentality then I'm all for it. Shit like the Vancouver riots just embarrass our country. Obviously hockey fans don't show up to the game with a gas mask and gasoline. Those people were not hockey fans they were there to fuck shit up.

So y'all haven't caught on to it being big money to put people behind bars yet? If you think this is a measure to ensure safety, you're wrong. It's just one more way to put someone in jail for 10 years that I guarantee was lobbied for by the for-profit prison system.

You just watch. More and more things that meant literally nothing in years past will carry massive mandatory jail sentences as time progresses if they can tie it in with patriotism/terrorism etc. Shit's actually kind of scary when you look at the profit margins in the for-profit prison system. It's a phenomenal business model if nothing else.

Yes- before you say it- I realize that sounds crazy but I can't think of any other reason you'd want to throw someone with no prior record in jail for 10 years for wearing a hankerchief.

How are people against this? It's already illegal to just be there! It is to prevent people from using anonymity to get away with crimes that they shouldn't even be committing on the first place.

And to who mentioned the teargas that had drifted away from the protest was in residential areas? Well it would be fine to cover your face there because going to buy groceries is not an illegal gathering

It's called a deterrent. I'm pretty sure in most cases you'll hardly get a slap on the wrist, unless you were doing something fucking stupid like damaging public/private property.

Also 10 years in Canada is not bad considering it's fucking Canada. Prison in Canada is like bringing a date to Applebee's, an absolute joke.

The new law, which takes effect immediately, makes it illegal to wear a mask in Canada "during a riot or unlawful assembly." (Because apparently Canadian laws against rioting aren't dissuasive enough?) Those caught wearing masks during riots could spend up to six months in jail, not including additional charges for rioting; masked miscreants caught "inciting" a riot face a potential 10-year sentence. CBC reports that "exceptions can be made if someone can prove they have a 'lawful excuse' for covering their face such as religious or medical reasons."

no. covering your face does NOT mean you are a threat. like I said, you could be covering your face out of fear of losing your job.

we've had many protests in Canada. many. look at all of them and tell me how many people have been injured by other protesters. Practically none. almost all the injuries, probably well over 95% of them, are caused by police.

Protests in Canada are, for the most part, very peaceful affairs. Even the worst protests (hockey riots) are still pretty tame affairs.


Teargas does NOT mean out of control. Prime example is Quebec City. The police used many instigators to make it seem like it was out of control only so they could bring out their toys and start using water cannons, teargas, and rubber bullets. This then turns into a perfectly good reason to wear a face mask.


You must live near Toronto if you don't see anyone with scarves and face masks and neck warmers covering their faces. Friggen Toronto, with your mild weather. Calling in the army to dig you out of a dusting of snow. I digress..


Peaceful protests happen all the time. And people caver their faces in every single one. Show me one single protest or demonstration where people don't have some sort of obstruction on their face. even a gay pride parade is full of people with rainbows painted on their face.




I absolutely do not have a 'government is out to get me' mentality. Christ, I work for the government. but this law just crosses lines. this is a law you'd expect in a country where the government is scared of its people. Which sound about right at the moment. This is the same government that's set up anonymous hotlines so you can snitch on your neighbour if you think they're not paying their taxes. the EXACT same thing that you'd see in Nazi Germany. But you start getting enough of these laws pilling up and soon enough you realize your freedoms are being restricted.

Many would even consider anonymity a freedom.


Then it makes you wonder. those people who showed up at Vancouver with gas masks and gasoline. how do we know they weren't cops?? they've done this exact thing at about every other large protest in the past while. And it just seemed too convenient that the cops would abandon a cop car in the very middle of the road clearly in no position to do anything at all and just left it to get burned.


And in a bank and convenience stores, those are private properties. totally different story. this is public property we're talking. then what gets tricky is what determines an illegal protest. it's a retardedly small number of people who could be together on public property holding a few signs in winter time with a scarf on and 10 years can be handed out.

this law has gone much too far.

i think a few things have gone overlooked.

1) This is for unlawful situations, not peaceful protests.

- The reason? Well (one might be..) as soon as you put a mask on it psychologically changes the way you assume responsibility for your reactions. You lose your own sense of identity and self responsibility, therefor having less inhibition to prevent one from participating is destructive acts such as the vancouver riot.

2) The reasons for this law might not based on an ethical standpoint--sure wearing a mask is now more punishable then murder in some circumstances. But murder also DOESN'T cost the government a HUGE chunk of change like a riot might.


I mean, c'mon. If you're doing something where you require a face mask, chances are you shouldn't be fucking doing it.

Also, who else gets the irony that the NHL is now making it mandatory to use something that's mask-like (facial visors) in a sport that is pretty much equated with riots and violence on the ice, and the nation that created it is now banning masks haha.

If you're a goalie, and you get into a hockey fight, do you now serve 10 years instead of 5 minutes? Lulz.

peaceful protest =/= legal protest



now I'm not sure if you just skim read or only know how to read certain words, but you also need to understand:


the vast majority of protests in Canada are peaceful. the reason some of them turn 'violent' is because of police instigators in the crowds. see Montebello as a perfect example.

a perfectly peaceful protest can be unlawful.

a dozen nuns can be sitting on a lawn with a few signs to protest mild sentencing for child rapists, but this will be a UNLAWFUL protest. heaven forbid they pull their watchamakalit too far over their faces or they could get 10 years in jail.

Well then that person is retarded because you cannot lose your job for attending a peaceful, legal protest. If you do lose your job because of that, you can sue your employer pretty easily for wrongful termination.

my dad is a CO and i've done months and months of work inside of the edmonton institution. i know exactly what its like. its an incredibly ugly place, run by indian gangs and hells angels. there is no chance any normal person would last very long in a place like that. might not be as bad as american max prisons, but its not far off. a little macaulay culkin lookin chump like you wouldn't last a week in there.
