Too bad the conversation isn't about the best sports city in the 80s. So in my opinion anything from more than 10 years ago is irrelevant.

Or we could include that if we wanna talk best sports city ever. I just think its more of a dynamic thing that changes over time. So no, in the 80s Boston wasn't on top and so statistics from that decade doesn't disprove anything about right now

Nobody cares enough about soccer to drive all the way to foxborough for games. Also, the stats aren't entirely fair. Toronto does have more fans, but they also play in a much smaller stadium. Toronto FC's stadiums fits 20,000 people while Gillette fits 70,000. If Toronto played in a stadium with a capacity of 70,000 their numbers would look closer to the Revs than the ones they have now. Toronto's average attendance is around 20,000, while Revs is around 15,500, but the stadium sizes skew the numbers greatly.

the made up 10 year limit won't even really help your case in just a year from now.

I think a decade is a pretty well established measurement. and even in the last decade Boston is fading. We're now over a decade since some of the championships. So no, it doesn't just suit Boston. How many years do you think we should go by then?

I'm not removing baseball from the argument. I'm saying if you selectively remove soccer from Boston then we can selectively remove baseball from Toronto. Look at all or look at nothing.


I'll bump this thread once a team like the Bruins are bottom of the pile again and the attendance is down at 80%.

And global, gotta go with London (5 epl teams,) Manchester (2 of the most popular teams, or maybe Barcelona. I mean Christ, Catalonia has tried to secede from Spain, and Barca are their warriors.

Toronto teams do shitty? Everyone cares about them. Toronto teams do well? Well, Toronto teams don't do well but I'd imagine they wouldn't lose support for doing well.



How can you say a city is a sports city when the ONLY reason there are so many 'fans' is because their teams are doing well? Soon as their teams don't do well they loose fans.

no. you were arguing that Boston was not the best sports town, if I'm not mistaken. By saying the patriots have been good since 2002 (longer considering they won the Super Bowl in the 2001-2002 season and had gone to the Super Bowl in the 96-97 season) you essentially proved the other persons point who was arguing that Boston was the best sports town. If you still believe Toronto is a better sports town then you are sadly mistaken

Right cause your logic makes much more sense. Who caaaares if the teams suck, that doesnt matter! As long as you got some fans in the crowd to watch the teams suck then its all good.

Boston has 7 championships in a decade, and thats only in the 4 major sports. If you consider minor/college sports then you have to add 1 national championship to BU hockey, 4 national championships to BC hockey, and 1 Lacrosse championship to the Boston Cannons. Whats that a total of 13? Lets see how many championships Toronto has... well no championships in the four major sports, none for the Jays, none for the Leafs, and none for the Raptors, and no NFL team. Oh, but wait, they did have one championship for their CFL team! That makes it 13 championships in Boston to 1 in Toronto. I rest my case!

for the NHL for instance, the categories they are ranked on are:

-how well the team does
-how well the team does
-does the team have any superstars
-does the city have deep hockey roots (the only one that matters for this)

how is that a measure of fan loyalty???

a measure of fan loyalty is: do you still sell out when your team is bottom of the conference?


top of the list for NHL for fan loyalty:

-Montreal
-Toronto


and wtf with Winnipeg being at the bottom for fan loyalty?? they have some of the most intense fans in the league after only 2 years being back. They've sold out every single game. every game.

This is straight statistics so it's an overall generalization of whats best for all of the teams. There will be outliers and you pointed one out and called the whole thing bullshit because of it. Congrats. These metrics were chosen for their statistical significance when measuring one data against the rest of the set. It generally works so sorry for it not being perfect. If other measures worked better, those probably would have been used. There is no such thing as perfects statistics.

It's all Lebron. He has more starpower than anyone else in the NBA by far and easily all american athletes. Who's number 2? Is it Kobe? Durant? No chance in hell he comes close to some of the football (soccer) stars or maybe an f1 driver for most in the world.


Lebron james can sell you headphones. Shaq can sell you a buick. It's actually really fucking interesting when you think about it.

But how can you argue that a city that just fuckin dominate the past decade of sports is not the best sports city??? And not to mention, all the teams are still good, with the exception of maybe the Celtics. I know they made the playoffs, but with them looking to ship out Doc, KG, and Pierce i just don't see them being contenders next year.

New York, Chicago, Bay Area, LA, Boston, Pittsburgh, Florida in general... None of you can claim any of these places as the 'best sports town'. They're all awful. You don't see Packers fans coming late and leaving early to games like you do in these cities (Pittsburgh, don't even talk - look at your average Bucs game)


Cleveland, Seattle, Portland - OR, Denver, and even Kansas City have WAY better fan support for their teams, and don't have shit for a bandwagon (well, maybe Denver, but I wouldn't call Wyoming and other states/towns along the cont. divide legitimate for a bandwagon..)

I think we're super far off on what is generally accepted as a great sports town.

I say having buzz year round is the most important thing in a great sports city. The cities with all 4 big leagues will have a game in town every week of the year and that gives them a huge advantage as there is always something going on. Buzz for a single team can be huge during the season but it dies in the offseason. A city can be huge for one sport but that doesn't mean it's huge for sports in general. A team can have great fans or a sport can have great fans but that doesn't mean the city does.

MLS is weird. I went to a RSL/Galaxy game in salt lake and it was the most fun I've ever had at any professional sporting event. However, just because the people that fill the staduim and the atmosphere is nuts doesn't mean SLC is a great soccer town even though it is a great place to see a soccer game.

I wouldn't say that buzz dies in the offseason at all in a real sports town. and MLS is getting pretty legit these days... stadiums are packing in more than a basketball team, and are filling a void in towns without MLB - especially. Cities in turn are itching to get a club in town, and build a stadium. New York even just announced a new team, and they don't even have a stadium in the works yet. That's how juiced people are for the beautiful game these days...

Portland has Basketball and soccer. As soon as basketball is over, soccer starts up. As soon as soccer ends, basketball starts up. Those fans sell out both and are fucking APESHIT over both, more than any city I've ever seen. You see timbers news in the middle of February. You see Blazers news in the middle of August. It's crazy.

You want to go one higher, look at Seattle. No championships for any of their current teams... they still get a good crowd at Mariners games - who are abysmal, they still sell out Seahawks games, they get 38k+ out to sounders matches, and before they shipped out the Sonics, they were pretty rabid about that too.

Get them a winter sport like NHL or NBA, and they'd oversell everything all year round.


Maybe it's because it's too rainy or something, but I firmly believe the PNW fans are the best...

Denver. because Broncos fans are insane, Rockies fans are pretty crazy for a team that does fuck all, Avs fans sold the shit out of their arena for years until people started fucking with the team and making downright laughable trades that shipped out their favourite players, and Nuggets fans have straight come out of the woodwork recently and sell out constantly.

Oh, and if you count MLS, rapids crowds are pretty awesome too.

and then up the road you have Buffs/Rams games that draw decent crowds even when they're AWFUL...

CO fans are pretty damn legit...



(and just to note - i'm from the Bay Area - the place that I claim has the worst fans in sports - just to let you know how I feel here)

The turnout at Mariners games is terrible. Seattle has completely given up on the Mariners. The reason Seahawks games sell out is because the team is so hot right now. It's also their only decent pro sports team. The Sounders do have incredible turnout, but its still soccer. San Francisco is a much better sports city than Seattle. That's coming from people I know in the Seattle area too, not just me. Denver is not a great sports city, the Broncos have quite the bandwagon, the Rockies don't really sellout that often, and the Avs are a has been with attendance that wanes in the absence of a playoff run. Portland is crazy over the Timbers and Blazers, but its still not a great city for a sports fan to live in.

Uhmmmm... You must not be a fan. The team started in the AFL with the original name of the Boston Patriots and kept that name for 10 years until '71 when they moved. Even if they weren't originally called that however, you'd still be wrong because Boston supports the Pats, so the Pats are our NFL team. Not to mention that the stadium for a team that is represents 6 states is closer to Boston than any of those other states.
