FWT & FWQ Thread 2013/2014

The Freeride World Tour & Freeride World Qualifier now both consist of some of the most important and simultaneously the most challenging competition events in freeskiing, and I want to create a thread which brings together both the people involved or interested, and also the latest news, event locations, dates & info.

Go ahead and post anything FWT / FWQ related! This includes pics, vids, news articles, interviews, opinions and any other info!

You are missing my point. I'm contending that the qualifying system they have in place doesn't inherently find the best skiers for the tour and that it favors certain locations. I would never expect to get on the pro tour by doing a local event, but I would expect there to be a local event. This would allow skiers to actually work their way up to the AM tour. I wouldn't expect every city to have one, but I would expect their to be one in each state or two maybe. The tour wouldn't actually have to fund the events, they could just be local events that also happen to get you points. The point of qualifiers is to find the most qualified competitors, not the ones with the most time and money to spare (this is a slight exaggeration). It also heavily favors Europe and there is a large number of strong skiers that have come out of North America. Canada actually only has one event and a lot of world class skiers have come from Canada. It just seems silly to have your only qualifiers be part of a tour where it is hard to enter events unless you have already competed in an event. This severely limits field of skiers that can possibly qualify, which means the chances of getting a really good skier are lower.

Well organize a 2* event near you and boom you can enter. I know plenty of people from the US who are doing seasons over here just to try compete.

You have to remember the tour is still young. More events pop up every year. Think of it this way: 1*s and 2*s are what you would consider local events. 3*s are like a flow tour, and 4*s are the AM tour.

you have to work your way up. The FWT do not organise these events, they are independently organised then FWQ affiliated. The only qualifiers the fwt do organise is the Verbier Freeride Week.

So push your local mountain to get a 1* or  2* event sorted out.

I don't have the means to organize such an event. It just doesn't work like that unless you have a lot of people or money behind you.

If 1*s and 2*s are like local comps then why are there less of them in region 2 than 4*s? Most qualifying systems have more smaller comps than smaller ones because their purpose is to narrow the field. In region 1 there are more 2*s than anything else, but in region 2 this is far from the case. In Europe this style of skiing, and skiing in general, is appreciated more than it is in the US, which is probably why there are so many more comps. If there are going to be so few in North America, though, it seems like some of them should be fewer stars. And if "the tour is still young", which I agree it is, then this would make even more sense.

anyone traveling from italy to chamonix for this weekend? the only trains i've found when i can leave are slow trains and take 4 x as long to get there as a car would (obviously I don't have a car...)
also possibly a stupid question but is the training day on friday or saturday (please say saturday)

you're on the waitlist. sign up order doesn't matter as long as you sign up and authorize pay before the initial deadline. spots are given by ranking first, with a sprinkle of recognized names (over ranked people in some cases), then it's first come first serve. with the subaru series now being ski AND snowboard there are a lot less spots available, as they need to get the comp done on time.

both man, i've signed up for both! not a single email was sent confirming or denying the either of them. Unorganized and bad communication by these half-wits is making me laugh at their system. Now I get to watch johnny fuck-off jump a 1 foot cliff and get points...

surprised you didn't make the 2 star, oh well, just show up early, get your name on top of the waitlist, and see if there's any no-shows/drops (occasionally people sign up for both, then drop the 2 when they make the 4). i know that's what i'll be doing cause their online system blows and works like it was designed in the early 90s.

Yeah, coming from 10 hours away its tough to do but im thinking I might go for it. There is so much damn snow in crested though its worth it just for a trip. Have you been accepted?

ya i'm pretty sure i just got on top of the waitlist for the 2 star so i'm going to show up tomorrow and hopefully i'm in, if not the pow is so good so fuck it...


comp should be sick though for sure.

Theres lots of snow here. Things are goin pretty well. Steadily snowing this week, so the venues should be looking nice.

The Kirkwood FWT stop has been relocated to Snowbird due to unsuitable conditions.

Really think sometimes the guys in the 4*s completely blow the FWT away. Some guys are completely insane.

You only have to look at the FWT rankings and the fact so many rookies are at the top says everything
