FWT & FWQ Thread 2013/2014

The Freeride World Tour & Freeride World Qualifier now both consist of some of the most important and simultaneously the most challenging competition events in freeskiing, and I want to create a thread which brings together both the people involved or interested, and also the latest news, event locations, dates & info.

Go ahead and post anything FWT / FWQ related! This includes pics, vids, news articles, interviews, opinions and any other info!

Nope, but I know it's always a lot of riders there, and it's hard to get into. You have to hve a few points and be quick to register.

So Euro FWQ riders:
got a rough idea of my calender, all depending on entry etc:

11-19th Jan Verbier freeride week 2 + 3*
31-2nd Feb Chamonix 2*
5th-9th Feb Engadin 3* (if i dont get into hochfugen)
8-11th Feb Hochfugen 4*
14-16th Nendaz 4*
29th-30th Hochgurgl 4*
24-27th Roldal 4*

Basically me and a buddy will be hitting all these dates if anyone wants to share accom or has floors for us to crash let me know... I have floor space for Nendaz Freeride if anyone needs. Just trying to cut costs down.

You can check your registration status simply by viewing the registrations page. Right now I think all of them are still on "WAIT". You can also see how many have registered, what the maximum number is, how many have been confirmed and how many have been declined.

I'd give it a bit of time and just keep checking for updates regularly. Best thing would be to contact the event hosts, I'm sure they'd be happy to help you.

I'm definitely trying to go to Verbier and Artesina, maybe nendaz and I'm looking into what others I can make it also. All depends on how many days I can skip of my study abroad program

Every event should be open now, Region 1 postponed its opening until 9 GMT or something of today. Registrations are usually closing around dec 20th

Nendez and artesina aren't showing up for me on the page... anyone else having that issue? None of the European 4* are showing up for me either but the USA ones are so I just signed up for the Chamonix 2* and Verbier 3* for now. Anyone else?

I think they will open up later on in the season.

Registered for Axamer Lizum 3*, waiting for the payment to go through.

First FWT action this season to be delayed - Revelstoke event rescheduled to March 10th 2014.

"Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort has recently opened for the season with great early season conditions, the competition venue known as 'Mac Daddy' face is in the backcountry outside of the resort, and is not yet suitable for the event."

Adam Coney said,
"First and foremost, FWT is committed to providing a safe and quality environment for our athletes. The new dates in March offer great benefits for the competition moving forward. Revelstoke continues to be one of the most favorite stops of fans and athletes alike, and we look forward to returning in March."

This means the 2014 season will open with the Courmayeur Mont Blanc (ITA) competition, on Jan. 18th.

they don't charge you till you get in which is a few weeks before each event.

yea they send you an email 20 days before the event where you can confirm or deny your spot, when you confirm they charge you if you deny they give your sport to someone else and you arent charge. you've got 20 days to save up!

Does anyone know if they have changed the payment platform they used last year?

as my card was one of those caught up in the fraud problem they had last season. Can't really afford to have 2000chf taken from my account again ¬__¬

yeah, im kinda worried about that again too, though I and everyone i met doing the tour had something happen to their accounts. one friend had $1500 charged for flowers, i had a bunch of random charges across the bottom of the US, the funniest being an inmate phonecall.

That happened to me too! Someone bought a $500 plane ticket to Texas in my name last year.

Does anyone know the differences of all the Verbier days? One option is from the 11-16 of January and the other ones are only 2 days long.

11-16 is the pass to do 3 2* events like last year. (ideal to get some experience and points as its like the same price as 2 events)

the 2 day ones are to do individual 2*s

plus you have the final dates for the 3* (which will hopefully be in Vicheres, that face was so much fun last year and way above the 2* rating it had last year)

ahhh ok damn I wish I could do that entire week but I have to be in Ferrara, Italy on the 15th. Do you know if the 3* has the actual competition on the 19th and then scoping out the run is on the 18th? I have to figure out a train from Ferrara and a place to stay near Verbier, and hopefully my classes in Italy don't actually start until the 20th haha. My host parents aren't gonna be stoked.

so who signed up for what?
I'm definitely going to Chamonix and would be stoked if anyone lives sort of nearby has a couch I can crash on. Looking at some Austrian stops that still have spots too.

Also I have ski days on my Epic pass for arlberg, verbier (can't make it to ski week though), and les trios vallees. Anyone nearby to those spots? Would rather have a local show me the mountain than ski around aimlessly. Let me know!

Im also going to Chamonix, Staying at auberge Alpenrose   was like 16 euros a night with breakfast.. who can complain at that. There is like a crew of 4 of us staying there.

As for Verbier, Nendaz is in the same ski area (its where i live) been here 7 years so can show you around If you're in the area

ill be there, still figuring out a place to stay, looks like the cheapest way is to just get one of the chalets, book for two then get like 6 to 8 people in one. (looks like most places charge for more than 2 people, so you gotta be sneaky).

google "lodging near Enumclaw, Wa". That will give you much better prices. You have to drive a little to get to the mountain, but it's not that bad (about an hour depending on how you drive).

I'm planning on being there if I can get away from class for a little, but I'm out of Seattle so I don't have to worry about places to stay haha

Per person, dormitory...  http://www.chamonix-alpenrose.com/  website is out of date but just shoot them an email to make a booking and get price.

Last year we had an awesome april.  Who knows this year. snow has been hit and miss. Snowed today 10cms so tomorrow should be a good pow day.

If you have no points you can pretty much forget doing a 4* event. Unless you can get a wildcard from the event organizers (each event has 5 wildcards)

They select based on ranking... even 3*s this year without points are hard to enter.

That's why you get fucked from by them if you're from a state that isn't Colorado or California pretty much. How the hell can you get ranked if you have to travel for too many hours to ski a comp? It's a janky ass system if you ask me.

Depends where you are based (in europe)   there are like 5 2*s within 2 hours drive from me. a 3* an hour away and a 4* on my doorstep.

But for sure having to travel 5 and a half hours for Engadin is seeming a massive ballache.

I think the system is good as there is such a boom in the amount of people competing. They had to do something to filter out the average skiers that compete from the good skiers. It's no different to other sports. At the end of the day you are trying to qualify for a world tour so prepare to travel.

The US in general is much harder to travel around for, Colorado really only has two of them. Europe is nice in that countries are pretty much the size of our states and they have trains going everywhere. I'm able to make it to twice as many as I was last season but that's only because I'm studying abroad this semester. next season I'm lucky if I make it to three when i'm back in the states.

Awesome FWT morning in Italy today!

Judges didn't seem too impressed by riders throwing tricks - rather dishing out the higher points to the more speedy, aggressive riders.

Highlight for me was Samuel Anthamatten, who blasted over a rocky cliff patch at the beginning of his line, hucked a gnarly double, and then unfortunately over rotated on the last feature trying a three. Loic Collomb-Patton displayed an absolute destroyer of a run and claimed first place, holding onto it while having to wait out plenty of riders after him. Josh Daiek came close with just one point less, taking the second place, followed by

It was a great comp, judges want the tricks but also the landings.. Samuel should have played safe on the last hit, might have ended top 3 at least top 5..

Except the point of a qualifier is to filter out the average skiers. Most sports have regional qualifiers somewhere along the line, not a qualifiers tour pretty much. Some one could go to every qualifier from day one, be mediocre, and take up a spot in all the comps that a better skier could have gotten if it wasn't for their system. Being from Washington the closest other stops other than Crystal are in Colorado and California. Those are a little too far for a lot of people from Washington to go to, but Crystal is four stars so that's pretty much out of the picture.

But you're trying to qualify for a world tour which is pretty much at a pro level. There aren't too many sports I can think of where you don't have to travel around doing the am tour before getting on the pro tour. If you legitimately want to try and get on the pro tour, you're going to need to travel around and do all the am events to qualify.

Would you expect to get on the pro tour in park/pipe by just doing well in one local event? Would you expect to get on any pro tour in any sport by doing well in one local event?



Also: props to Rizzo for getting 4th on the snowboard side. Kootenay represent!
