Nendaz Freeride has announced it's date. 14-18 March '14.

Still nothing as to whether it will be a 4* again or remain a 3*. Hope it goes back to being a 4*.

Ski season is slowly rolling over the horizon in the northern hemisphere, so although the remaining FWQ dates won't be released until mid November, here's some related news:

The Swatch Skiers Cup returns to Zermatt (Switzerland) in just less than two months! On the 4th of January 2014 this contest between North American and European skiers will commence - here are some words from the two captains (Julien Regnier & JP Auclair):

“When we first met it was a blast of new energy and new ideas for skiing. JP is an amazing skier, very creative, a hard worker and I really enjoy skiing with him,” said Regnier of his opponent.

Auclair responded, “I first heard about Julien through my friend JF Cusson who told me about ‘this French guy who was doing really progressive skiing.’ When we met, we instantly hit it off and starting skiing and working on different projects together.”

Anyone looking to compete in FWQs this season should definitely check out this information about judging criteria.

It gives a good insight into which processes are used to define the riders' scores on competition day. Obviously, similar criteria are used not just in FWT/FWQ, but also in other freeride competitions, so this is useful no matter which comp you're taking part in.

Have they changed it from last season?

Top tip for people getting into it. If you have the chance go speak to the judges. It will give you an insight to what they are looking for etc and they are normally super cool and approachable.

They're just the ones I've listed as possible on my calendar, so that I can work around them with university, ski instructing, etc.

I want to ride them for the experience, just because freeride events are so fun, and obviously to challenge myself and improve my skills generally. You get to see new places and meet new people, and I absolutely love traveling. Another thing is the fact that I ski better when I'm under a bit of pressure, so competing always helps with that.

If I get three results I'm happy with then I'll definitely go easy on the comps.

Doing lots of comps makes sense if you want to get on the tour because you have the most chances to get good results. If I was taking it seriously I would only bother with 3 and 4 stars though, you can't get enough points to qualify from 1 and 2 stars.

Nope, but you have to do the 1-2 to stand a better chance of qualifying for the 3/4 stars. Depends. Guess if you have the budget for it why not.

only 2*s i do is verbs freeride week and temmos (or was it 1*) cause they are so close.

But most people who actually are trying to qualify for the tour will have points from 4*s already, and they are worth so much more, for example, I have a 20th from the Chile 4*, which is 345 points, the guy above me was 3rd at a 2 star and only has 350 points.

Definitely doing lots of comps works, even the best skiers fall sometimes and giving yourself the most chances is key. Personally I am based in Japan for most of the winter, and there are no comps there, so will only get to do the Roldal 4*, hopefully my points will be enough to get in.

FWQ events are rated from 1* to 4*, this depends on certain things such as the terrain or the size of the competition. Each type of event has a different value in points.

Example:
1st place in a 4* competition gets 1800pts / 1st place in a 2* competition gets 600pts

The aim of the point system is to give riders a chance to gather points throughout the season, and seeing as only the three BEST results count towards the final score, it's still possible to make your way to the top despite bad results early on in the season. Each season, the four top ranked male skiers/top three female skiers (from each region) qualify for the next season's FWT.

Also you have to have enough points to qualify for 3* and 4* events as higher points get priority.

So when starting out look at doing 2*s early season and aim for the 3-4*s late season.

Yeah I think the Norway comp will be an expensive trip (and will also require knees), but never been there at all so I am stoked to go. I might go to the Scandinavian champs in Sweden in May as well.

Have you competed before? I think points from last year help for getting entry.

This. Super bummed there isn't one at the bird this year. Also strange that the Crested Butte and Squaw ones are so close in time to each other when all the other ones are decently spaced out. Going to be hard to decide which ones to go to.

hahah..bummer, i was thinking about leaving my knees at home..but I guess they will have to come! yEAH its expensive, but I think definitely worth it.
