When I was younger our family used to go to Hood for a few weeks every summer to windsurf. I don't do it as much now - probably because I'm lazy and my dad won't rig my equipment for me anymore :)
I think it's almost like 2 different sports - in the beginner phase you're on a massive floaty board standing around in a light breeze doing nothing but uphauling the sail all the time, and it's kind of boring. And then once you can hook in with a harness, waterstart, and get your feet in the footstraps, then you can get on a tiny little board that won't even hold your weight until you're planing, and you can go out in super strong wind & waves. At this point it suddenly becomes a lot of fun. The challenge is that it's a big step to advance from one phase to the other.
So if you start, stick with it through the beginner phase because it's actually way better once you get past that part!
