Just wondering, why would a thread like this, currently with 488 downrates, be at the top of the front page?

Seems a bit silly to promote something that has a massively negative response. Personally I have no wish to log in to Newschoolers and be confronted with the worst thread on the site as the most visible element.
So my question is, is getting massively downrated as effective as getting massively uprated? If that's the case, perhaps I should focus on creating the worst possible content for the site. Maybe that'll net me more views!
