another era of freestyle skiers is growing old. thank you for your service LOLO!

the next wave of skiers is taking ownership. these kids can 630 off flat rails and double flip in their first season in the park... step aside tom wallisch, any kid can do your tricks, and film it heath... these kids can even talk shit better than the people who created the sport.

the only thing about the new, newschoolers is......... they wont be as good as the originals.
ever since travis heed, vanular, and maybe brogan no one touched their personal steeze, and it certainly looks like the new era is hucking harder with less style and innovation.

In a way, this is kinda true. There are stil a lot of people out there pushing the sport in terms of style, but it seems like the focus, at least of lately, has been how many spins you can do off of a kicker or flat bar. I can't stand watching edits with back-to-back-to-back mega spins off rails when the skier can't even land without washing into a pizza doing everything in their power to just hold it together.

Is it impressive? Absolutely, I can't even imagine what it would be like to spin like that. But I feel once you see a few edits like this, they all begin to look the same. All in all though, it's just skiing, everyone does it differently.

^agreed. I would much rather watch edits with a lot of style (*cough*brogan*cough*) than some kid spinning a ridiculous amount like a top of a rail.

you know know the pain I had when the first generation riders (3 phils and others) retired. I still dont know most of the riders today.

I think we are beating a dead horse here but skiing will just become like snowboarding, you will have your competition guys who can do some real good cork 7s and janky 270 ons and then you have your film snowboarders who can pretty much film an entire segment on a stupid feature or just doing stylish stuff without taking it to dub. Basically skiing will completely diverge into shea flynns, andy parrys, and nick goeppers. which is cool cuz everyone is happy that way

see i think there are still skiers trying to make style more important than the tricks they do. hornbeck for example. and i think there are skiers some where that are a part of this generation that are still trying to do this. personally i want to make my self look stylish and make my tricks look steezy rather than . i cant do a six off or a 1080 but i can make my tricks look steezy (at least i think i can lol) but i agree and i do think there are a lot of kids who have the raw talent but look like a bunch of goons when they ski and that sucks since it seems like style and individuality is no longer a major portion of our sport

sparknotes: still think a few skiers take style over tricks, skiing is losing its style and people individuality of style

This thread should take off. Out with the old, in with the new. The people that embrace that the most are the folks I respect the most in skiing. We have to embrace our past and never forget it, but skiing should employ fresh ideas and fresh perspectives.

Have to disagree here. Have you heard of a young man by the name of Keiran McVeigh?

There will always be a general popular progression trend in every sport, older generations will say it will never be as good as it was, and there will aways be someone new every once in while who comes out with a new and original way of doing things that blows minds and creates a new style and movement.

Anyone who thinks that there will never be another Vanular, Wallisch, etc is just naive. It may be a while but eventually there will be someone.

like Saga said have you ever watched karen ski its like he pisses out style, you dont see him doing dubs and 10's off jumps his go to jump tricks are a 3 or cork 3. He is pushing the style aspect and so are many others

I think in one way youre right, but like saga said, there are plenty of people pushing the style of the sport. Bdog, Kieran, Keefer, Delorme. It does seem like a lot more people are hucking, but style will never completely die out.

i think that the whole "future spin" fad is an excuse for people to quit trying new tricks. its stupid why cant a triple look good too? why cant their be originality in a 1440? never seen one done with a seat belt japan witch i personally think could be rad maybe not done in a normal park but on say the JOI jump. I think the sport is pretty much a video game now . People should embrace "future spins" The more they are done the more style will be integrated. Future spins are hard and people are just pussys simply said

I dont know if it is because i have become numb and desensitized, or if having blown my knee out last season has made me less passionate when it comes to skiing the park, but i just don't find that much inspiration from the edits that i see floating around on newschoolers. 4 years ago, back when filming tech was shit you had to be a really good skier, and have an amazing editor for you edit to stand out. This usually meant you were either super dedicated to skiing and put your entire season into a banger 4 min edit, or you were pro and had a crew that followed you around all the time.

I feel like with the advent of the Gopro and the advancement of video tech things have gotten to the point where we are shocked and awed every day, and don't get me wrong the skiing in all of todays edits is next level, but for me it makes it harder and harder to find the inspirational edits that stick with you and you watch over and over again.

I remember back in the day (2008ish) you would have to wait to for fall and actually go to a local theater to see the years best flicks, and then the only thing that would cary you through the season would be edits like Pheel Good, and and that wonderful bliss in spring time that was JOSS, God how i miss JOSS. I still watch those edits all the time, they brought humor into skiing. Colby and I'm a pro is unforgettable, Team USA and Team canada truly great.... they carried on a tradition of comedy and bad ass skiing that has come down from before the time of Hot Dog. I think the Futureschoolers are taking themselves a bit to seriously.

so to all the Futureschoolers that don't take yourselves to seriously, and i know your out there, how bout some super styli edits with some awesome hilarity involved so that i can keep my motivation up for future seasons. the only problem i foresee is the one that lolo hints at in his message; a industry that has become to serious and competition oriented that they wont give you the money gear and support that you need in order to make things like this happen.

Huge props to companies like FDwear for keeping some comedy and laughter in the industry, and even more props to companies like 4FRNT for putting out team movies like DANG! and to companies like Saga, Line, Moment, Surface, Bluehouse, and so many others out there for supporting the little guys that are just fun as hell to watch, and don't give a damn about taking anything seriously

I read it, Ill summarise:

- Filming and editing tech has got way better.
- Available to everyone and there mum to film their skiing. GoPro
- Not just pros and crews and the super dedicated.
- Everyones edits are ill coz of the new tech, harder for the inspirational ones to stand out.
- Back in the day, one had to wait till fall to watch the ski films.
- Only a couple of edits through the season. JOSS.
- Used to be loads of humour, eg Colby Im a pro and the JOSS edits - humour originates from hot doggin
- Skiing getting to serious, lacking humour, to serious and competition orientated. reference LOLO.
- Props to companies keeping the stoke alive and keeping it real supporting the smaller guys who keep it real.

I agree. The entire freeskiing community is inventing fresh ways to keep the sport alive. A lot of us tend to keep the style alive, but there are a select few who want freeskiing to become aerials. I mean, there's nothing wrong with watching someone do a crazy rodeo 5, but I think skiing should be savored in everyone's lifetime no matter how far the sport goes.

I agree, that's how it's been and I think should be. Don't let the past limit what you do in the future, but never forget your roots and the skiers that paved the way for the sport to grow to what it is today.
