Bus Driver Discretion

Warning: this might be boring.

So I use public transit on the occasion that I don't have my bike around, but from observing from my deck, I've noticed a couple of things about bus services in a small community.

This would most likely have to be a proposal to local government (county, even city): Bus drivers, since they are formally trained, licensed, and randomly monitored, should be allowed the discretion to treat a *Stop* sign as a *Yield* sign if current traffic levels allow.

ex. If bus services in said area run late, and not many cars are on the streets, or if it's between rush hours and there are no obstacles, then the bus driver should continue on through the intersection without putting on the brakes to stop.

Sounds good but I think due to liability issues it wouldn't fly. Something like that would only take a couple minutes off each persons commute and the city gov or whoever would probably put safety above time.

No that's a fucking stupid idea we have stop signs for a reason and buses especially should obey them given their size.

I have been trained, am licensed, and my driving is occasionally monitored by local police. No more stop signs for me at night! Woo hoo!

Mmmm, naw. The only reason that I would actually support this is because when I'm on the bus I hate when it abruptly stops. Especially when I'm standing.

I like to call those intersections "stopionals" you just look and if you're good send it. Tough to pull off unless you're in a neighborhood or something

For buses it's not that big of a deal and since they have to stop before all railroad tracks in CA, I don't ever see them being allowed to yield instead of stop. However, I think this could be very helpful for a trucker towing a fully loaded 53 foot trailer.

Horrible idea. What makes busses so special?

Also city bus drivers in Seattle fuckin suck. In the last month I have seen one run a red light, and even put on his blinker the wrong way for the turn. Also they put in a shitty rapid ride system which makes the busses block the whole roadway, and causes stupid fuckin amounts of backups for everybody besides the 20 poor/old people on the bus

Yeah in my experience bus drivers tend to be assholes and ignore most traffic laws anyways. They already drive like they're above it and can be scary to drive near, I'd rather not have them actually above the law

this pretty much sums it up.

bus drivers are just normal people, they arent these elite drivers with the abilities to let them do this. if youre hiring marines or air force pilots or some other elite people to drive the busses then fine. but for now stop signs are there for a reason and there are too many risks letting bus drivers change the rules.

If anything, this would work well in smaller communities, not places like Seattle or cities larger than that. And no, not only poor people use public transit.

It's not that bus drivers are some special kind of breed; they're monitored by the public (other drivers) and any lapse in judgment by a driver could easily be reported to the city/county by notifying them of the bus number and time of incidence.
