I thought it was sick as fuck. Holy what. That was awesome. I don't know why you guys seemed to dislike it so much. I saw it in 3D too which made it even better

Perhaps a retarded question, but Can one choose to not see it in high frame rate? When I saw the first one in theatres I wished I had seen it in 2D, because I thought the visual effects were so... crappy.

Who else thought the completely random gopro-ish looking shots in the barrel scene were so out of place and shitty? My friends and I thought maybe they were only in there for some 3d reason, but even if that's the case in 2d it was just an eye sore.

It was pretty sweet, but that grade-school love triangle between Legolas, Steven Tyler's daughter, and Man-Dwarf was bullshit.

I'm interested to see how Peter Jackson turned the last 30 pages of the story into a three hour film...

Im the first to say I know absolutely nothing about technology, but I dont understand how LOTR could have such good special effects eventhough they were made back in like 2003, while the Hobbit movie(s) makes me want to gag a little in my hand and smear it under the movie seat.

Oh my god it was annoying. Some I can understand like the melting gold but some other stuff bothered me like the gopro shots down the river in the barrels

As for the film i really loved it, for me the 48 frames + 3D sucked me in to the screen and at some points it felt real. Specially the clips with the giant bees in the "bears" house. As for the story it was really predictable, but quite well written imo.
As for the CGI there was some insanly good parts like Smaug and the giant bees to mention some, ut also some insanly bad parts. The gold statue melting looked like some PS2 graphic shit and in some scenes the water was the same story.
The music could also been more memorable.
But overall the story had a nice flow and kept my attention from A to Z. Sure we all knew it was Sauron who was in that old fortress which is one of the bigger mystery features of this film, that mystic-exitement went away compleetly for me, but who gives a shit it looked fucking awesome when he took the shape of his real self and the eye at the same time.

Movie was fucking sick! wish it was darker like the lord of the rings. i get that they are trying to appeal to everyone but some parts were just way too childish. like a barrel scene where one of the dwarfs is just rolling over all of the orcs like hes in donky kong. those go pro shots aslo made me want to rage. so out of place and shitty.

Yea agreed. One big thing that bothered me was the ending. In my head I was thinking "oh shit here we go" then it ended. Well at least theres another midnight premiere to go to

Lord of the Rings, as a novel, is inherently darker and more adult than The Hobbit, which was meant to be a children's tale, more or less. The designs of the films reflect this: LOTR had a more dreamy, spooky, dramatic style, whereas The Hobbit had a more bubbly, bright, and accessible style. Also worth noting is how modern cinema convention (48p, 3D, digital) coincides with the stylistic aims of The Hobbit, so PJ got the funding and ran with it.

It sounds like we fall into similar camps about film: we do not have a preference for hyper-clarity because we feel that too much photo detail can ruin the magic. Hence my hatred for 48p, 3D, and most digital films.

I just dont like how Azog is in the Hobbit films. He should be dead like he is in the books. Same with Legolas. He's not in the Hobbit yet he plays a huge part in the movies.

Make the Unfinished Tales into another movie and keep the Hobbit as the Hobbit.

The movies would have been so much better if they didn't try to throw all the extras into it. I'm okay with the back story with gandalf, elrond, galadrial, and saruman. I find it awesome to see their story.

However, the other stuff with the pale orc and radagast. bleh. Those extras and the damn cgi ruin it. Wish they had treated the hobbit with the same careful devotion that they did with the lotr.

welllll i actually quite enjoyed the first hobbit. its a bit mickey mousy compared to lotr but i expected that from reading the book (havent read lotr books though).

this one was a pretty bad follow up though. some of the characters, acting and special effects were so cringeworthy. the elves were pretty bad, lots of the action scenes really lame. in the first one you felt like you were part of the gang watching your buddies go on an epic quest, this one not so much. some characters were totally underdeveloped or pointless like the river barge guy or the bear man. couldn't even get into bilbo or the dwarves which was too bad.

based on the lore the hobbit series was always going to have a different tone to lotr, probably working against it. this one though was pure star wars syndrome, entertaining movie on its own but doesnt really hold a candle to the sequels

yep completely agree. the really cheesy Hollywood parts threw me off a lot. Like the whole barrel scene. Sure, have him knock over a few orcs, but once you're past the 15th and he's bounced back and forth over the river 4 times it's just so incredibly cheesy and lame and ruins the vibe.

also the CGI was god awful in a lot of scenes. the part with Legolas riding down the bridge was just terrible. Computer game cut scenes have better CGI.

was still enjoyable to watch though

I just went down to visit family for christmas and saw it with my brothers again and I still love it even more the 2nd time. I just didnt like the animated looking stuff besides smaug which blew my mind but other stuff wasnt great gonna see it again

Saw a midnight showing the day it released, and I was very pleased. Some of the fighting was insane.

The framerate did give me a little bother, but fuck it did not really hurt my opinion.

Also, I don't know why, I thought that Laketown was so sick.

Overall, I really liked it.

Yeah, it's too bad they didn't spend more time with Beorn and less with the elves because Beorn is such an interesting character in the book and isn't given nearly as much attention in the movie.

I thought Bard was fine, though. Well enough developed, and, if the movie stays at all true to the book, obviously his and Beorn's full significance will play out in the next movie

Well I finally saw it last night and in total honesty I was disappointed. The graphics sucked, the ending was lame, and WTF was the the GoPro footage? The closest they got to following the book was just going to the locations in the book but nothing that occurred in the book really occurred in the movie. Obviously they had to spice it up a little bit but I for one like an original story line being followed. I did however enjoy the combat in this movie. It was a little more realistic and brutal.
