as you might know, the TGR colab contest is up with a grand prize of $100,000k.
I want to know why there are 42 entries, more than half of which are in my honest opinion, pathetic. (not to be mean, but c'mon...)

$100,000.

seriously.

was it lack of marketing? intimidation knowing the likes of Sage were entering?

what is your excuse, NS, for not submitting something? A LOT of you could have easily made entries substantially better than the bulk of them.

do the math. a lottery ticket is a very long shot compared to this contest

If it's meant for "regular" people to enter and possibly win, big names should have been excluded.

I know I said fuck it when I figured out that go-huge pros are going hard after this. What the fuck chance would anybody else stand against that? I may be a dreamer but I'm not an idiot and there's no way I would ever hold a candle to the shit they could come up with between their redic skill level and the photogs/video guys they can collab with to make it happen. \


It's just kind of fucking stupid if you ask me. Either make it for pros or make it for everyone else. Combining the two is just stupid.

I don't understand why you guys keep thinking oh freeskiing is so underground no one cares. I think Tom is very unique compared to everyone else in our sport in terms of popularity. You're right there is a huge difference between watching a free YouTube video and purchasing something. The beauty of iTunes is how simple they make purchasing things, it could easily attract people who normally wouldn't buy a level 1 movie... GoPro makes a fb status of tom's trailer, link to iTunes, I can see quite a few people picking it up...

I mean just look at the art of flight. That was a very successful film, and I am not even trying to imply that toms one year solo film project with just decker will come even close to entertainment value that the 8 million dollar budget that t.rice had. But point is there is a much larger market than just this freeskiing niche. And I feel like Tom is the only rider right now who is big enough to possible reach that target audience and thus could result in some surprisingly high revenue numbers that you guys are so quick to write off cuz it's a ski flick.

And for what it's worth I always buy 4bi9 movie regardless because of a friend. But I am not going to lie I am less excited to see the movie because I have seen one of my favorite segs already.... I think that id a pretty logical mindset.

Please try to take your head out of your ass. I am stoked on you guys' edit but berating the sea of people who don't have those resources at their disposal for not wasting their time is completely fucked.

The reality of the situation is that the structure of the contest was fucked from the start. Guys like you will have a solid chance, sure- but don't act like you weren't already pretty much sitting around with all the shit needed to win this when the opportunity flopped down on your dick, mmmkay? Maybe if TGR had a "Weld your way to $100,000" contest, I could shit on you for not having a Miller 350LX just sitting there waiting to win it- "Oh man anybody who's got an $8k welder could win this" NO SHIT SHERLOCK.

Get it now?? I would have loved to have entered, but the way the rules were laid out, I knew I wouldn't stand a chance no matter what I hucked, plain and simple.

Didn't advertise at all. Its a joke that there giving out 100k and there wasn't much advertising. Also there was no guidelines to it. As in, everyone did think Wallisch was entering and such. Also for sage to enter a TGR contest like this is stupid. He is one of the top dogs for TGR, so shouldnt be allowed to enter. It would be like wallisch entering superunknown still.

I was not talking about an 8k piece of equipment, I was talking about a $1400 camera that a ton of people have. An opportunity didn't fall into our lap, we didn't have crazy resources, we put in hard work and committed to building big urban features and unique backcountry features. That took time and a ton of hard work but not outrageous resources.

Everyone is just lazy!! 4bi9 put in the work with dale showing why there the edit is the best. Your right tho, you guys got out there and worked hard for your footage. And on top of it didnt just throw it all together. Took the time to make a 100k edit and it shows! But seriously get sage out of it. Its stupid the top dog at tgr enters the tgr contest.....

Definitely hoping they do this again next year, if so i'm putting everything i got into charging hard and hoping putting out an edit as dope as mcnutts, or randy evans or all the other slayers!


but didn't happen this year, so best of luck to you Nick, you straight up murked the BC and have a good shot at winning, randy evans should be top 5 or even top 3, and Dale obviously killed it.

I AM NOT A PRO AND DO NOT HAVE HIGH END CAMERA EQUIPMENT, THEREFORE MY CHANCES OF WINNING ARE SLIM TO NONE.

I never downplayed your efforts or results, as obviously it takes a shitload of work and planning to execute something like this. I'm just saying that someone in your situation is well suited to make a competitive edit. The rest of us- probably not so much.

I guess you could just continue to bang your keyboard from behind an orange name and insist that this was for everyone and we're just lazy, but in reality it's for a few fell-positioned and equipped people to shoot it out for a top spot. If you lived in Minnesota, only had a contour HD and didn't know any pros would you feel the same way about your chances? I would venture to guess no, you wouldn't.

That's all I'm saying. If they wanted to include the masses they should have added a "non sponsored athlete entry" section.

^His point was that the equipment isn't really the issue. You don't need "high end" camera equipment at this point. You can do pretty well on a budget - easily well enough to put together an edit that wouldn't look out of place in this contest. The stuff that the big film companies were filming on a short few years ago is inferior to technology you can now buy on sale nowadays at your local Wal Mart.

The real reason you didn't have a chance to win this was that you aren't, and don't have access to, talent on a level of a Talkington or McNutt. Which may or may not be actually true - there are plenty of sleepers out there whose names no one knows, who I'm sure could at least take a run at those guys.

And if everyone could just not feed SFB's trolling that'd be fantastic, mkay.

Right because it's impossible to take gear off when you're being filmed hitting the jump. You'd be surprised at how many of these park rats do skin out to some pretty ill skiing including Wolverine... which is hardly difficult to get to.

Also why would he waste his time skinning around in the BC like a fucking pussy when his chance at having a career skiing (maybe that's why you're so angry?) is hitting urban and park?

Give Dale two seasons and I bet he will be ripping lines and skiing harder than 90% of TGR's site, which is full of granola-eating sally-asses anyways so I guess it wouldn't be too impressive.

I can understand his skepticism... you'd think that a bunch of those features / rails / locations would have been hit by multiple 4bi9 athletes, some of which shots would make it into the movie. So to some extent sponsor dollars would have contributed to this. But I don't see why that's a bad thing. A lot of people are going to watch this edit and many of them will subsequently see the 4bi9 movie, which is obviously the fond hope of everyone sponsoring that movie.

I mean literally and figuratively speaking, you can't win if you don't try. That much is obvious. But don't tell me that random nobody bros are going to take this contest when you just wrapped up a fucking star studded edit in a fucking prime location with some sick gear, y'know?

I understand that you don't need a 7D to make an incredible edit and this site is evidence to that every day. I'm just saying that if TGR meant to include everyone, this was a shitty way to do that. There are very few who feel their riding and filming will be on par with the top echelon skiers and filmers submitting their work and quite frankly I'm not surprised there were so few submissions from people we don't already know.

I have no idea how people aren't understanding that basic concept.

I'm not saying it would be a bad thing. But the claim was made that Dales part was able to come together because of large contributions from sponsorship dollars. I was simply trying to explain how that is not the case. The 4bi9 guys for the most part did it all on their own.

He doesn't hit a cliff until halfway through his edit, the landings were cut from almost every shot, the ratio of impressive skiing/time was just terrible.

He did have a nice 360 off that natural diving board, but is that supposed to make up for the rest? I don't think so.

I think you'd be surprised at how much TGR, especially Todd Jones, respects urban-focused edits. Cam and Clayton had an all-urban segment in The Dream Factory last year and Todd respects the hell out of Stept (probably because Nick and Alex remind him a bit of he and his brother Steve when they founded TGR.

In regards to 100k video contest, I'm with Nick McNutt on this one. What do you have to lose? So you're not going to be able to upload that sick edit onto Newschoolers, Vimeo, and Facebook right away. Oh well. Upload your 12-13 edit to TGR and get all the people at your dad's office to vote for you, along with all of your social media and real friends. It's $100,000. There's not one person on this site that wouldn't benefit from having $100,000.

...except Steve Stepp because that kind of money would kill that man.

we all know that large contributions from sponsorship dollars are not too prevalent in the ski industry except if you're at the very top.

the claim is that alongside dale's murderous skiing, he was in an environment with a group of ppl - 4bi9 filming for their movie - that gave him access to the resources he needed to be a top contender in this contest/ produce one of the best edits with unique urban to come out this season

fairly large group of people aka the crew and its sponsors (not just dale and mcleod/ napier/ arnell/ aj, already a solid collab of filmers right there). this allows for purchases such as a winch and snowmobile, stuff that random chad homie might not have the same access too

once again props to dale for making one of the most fucked edits in skiing. it was clearly a big commitment, but shouldn't be minimized as far as resources the way mcleod made it out to be

All of you guys are making assumptions regarding resources that you simply have no clue about. I don't know why you jump to conclusions based upon the way you think things work in your head. I'm just saying that is not the case. I NEVER berated anybody for not entering, I was making the point that I think edits from around the world, based heavily on what I see appear on this site on a regular basis, could have faired well in this competition. Maybe not win or whatever, but who knows, deifnitley many more competitive entries could have come out of Newschoolers. I see shit almost daily from some unknown Scandinavian kids on here that blows my mind. If anything I was giving more props to the level and depth of talent that is out there these days.

Sooo much butthurt in this thread. Saga and 4bi9 were completely right in entering this contest and there was nothing unfair about what they did, they have a ton of skill and they produced a sick edit that has a good chance of winning.

At the same time Saga and 4bi9, you guys do not need to try to put yourselves on the same level as the average newschoolers, because your not, not even close. I won't claim to know anything about your funding or resources but even if you guys did not put any money specifically into the Dale edit, there is no way an average no name is going to have the time or resources to put out something like that. Not only because Dale slays, and 4bi9 is an experienced company with their shit on point, but i'm assuming you guys dont have to worry about working full time in a dish pit or mowing lawns in order to support your skiing like 95 percent of the people on this website probably do.

What I'm saying is you really just need to let this go, take the high road, and accept that your edit is fire, you killed it, and people will always be butthurt. Going to these lengths to rebuttal peoples comments and defend yourself just looks silly because we all know you guys are not struggling to find time to go out and film skiing like a lot of other people are.

Because he, and the other people in this thread, have no fucking idea what they're talking about.

You guys would be shocked if you knew how much "support" 4bi9 gets. they pay for everything out of their pockets, mcleod napes and aj all do freelance work on the side to pay bills yet they were out on the streets 4-5 days a week for 3 months this winter logging shots then spent 3-4 weeks in grizzly building shit. None of them live a lavish lifestyle, everyone is scraping to make ends meet. Even big companies like l1p and pbp, they arent brain farm, they dont make millions of dollars every year. Any crew of kids couldve done what 4bi9 and dale did this year, yes having a winch or a sled is helpful but they hiked everything in griz and then used cars/bungies/natural drop ins for alot of the urban features too. Saying you dont have the "pro" resources is bullshit because 4bi9 barely has any of that shit either.
