as you might know, the TGR colab contest is up with a grand prize of $100,000k.
I want to know why there are 42 entries, more than half of which are in my honest opinion, pathetic. (not to be mean, but c'mon...)

$100,000.

seriously.

was it lack of marketing? intimidation knowing the likes of Sage were entering?

what is your excuse, NS, for not submitting something? A LOT of you could have easily made entries substantially better than the bulk of them.

do the math. a lottery ticket is a very long shot compared to this contest

"No chance" was me overselling it, but by rights this should be more or less a lock, but with the format, I can totally see something screwy happening.

First of all I am definitely bewildered and bummed out that more big-time edits from great skiers didn't come in. I was honestly expecting 200 + edits, with at least 40-60 to be very very good. I was primarily expecting 90% of superunknown edits to pop up again (with even more phenomenal footage from the rest of the season perhaps). I wasn't really expecting Level 1, 4bi9, or another major company to give away any shots though, but it definitely looks like 4bi9 made the right choice now.

Eheath said it earlier that maybe the realski footage wasn't allowed, but we don't know for sure. Yes maybe it's a bit of a slap in the face that other skiers from major film companies could simply use their footage from X Games to possibly win 100k (out of TGR and their sponsors pocket), while Chris Benchetler and Sammy Carlson are the only guys that film for TGR (and they don't even film for them that much). I think TGR might have specifically notified the Realski crews and told them that their footage was not allowed. If not, I have no clue why they didn't throw their footage in other than the possibility that the film companies maybe wanted to use some of the realski shots for their own movie and they didn't want the footage to be seen even more. Or more importantly, they didn't want TGR to have any of the footage for their use.

And to answer the question keep in mind that my skiing ability is absolutely NOWHERE near the top entries such as Mcnutt or Dale, and hell, guys like Ras Jacob have me by a landslide. Anyways I was able to ski a lot from January-April and I got some pretty decent footage during that time. A little park skiing, but mostly cliffs and "big mountain" (inside ski area) lines. 100% of this footage from a GoPro and 70% of it as a POV angle. And of course, this footage would've been edited by the glorious iMovie. I'm not sure how this footage would compare to some of the best 12-13 season edits that on NS because my footage is dominantly big mountain, but I can tell you that my park skiing is definitely not at the level of the best NS edits however. So I was intrigued by the 100k like everyone else, but I never seriously considered entering mainly because of the first paragraph ^^. And even with the surprisingly low amount and debatably low quality edits that were entered, there really is no chance that I could crack the top 12 anyway.

The contest was pitched to us by TGR as an effort to establish TGR as a true online platform for action sports (not as a big mountain/bc film company). Essentially they are trying to cross genres and interests and become a massive website. That is a big reason the money came from their pockets and not from sponsors. We were told that they expected a broad range of submissions covering every facet of skiing and that is why the finals voting scheme made sense. In effect, every area of skiing would be some what equally represented and that would give the final vote a balance and fair outcome. Obviously from the entries we've seen that is not the case, they are pretty much all BC/pow/big mountain skiing, which I think is a result of a very poorly marketed contest by TGR and in effect has relegated it to a contest based on TGR's classic granola, big mountain reputation. If it was pitched to us as a contest from the classic TGR (not the new tgr (a broad based action sports web platform) than we definitely would have pushed harder for a different method of picking the winner. Hard to see how a fair/balanced vote is possible in the finals with the current entries.

this makes a ton of sense. the average NSer hears 'tgr contest' and immediately thinks of BC, powder, and cliff edits. the average NSer most likely is either A) not too interested in that or B) has little to no footage of that

Well you should probably win bud. I thought the point of the contest was to promote skiers that don't get that exposure...sage's, dale edits are awesome but they film with major companies so it just seems a like they get tons of exposure as skiers Max arresualt, Jordan clakre and the other whistler boys should be way higher in the rankings

Poor marketing... Didn't even know about this until the submission deadline already passed. Would've loved to have thrown an edit out there even though I have a very little chance of winning, but for $100,000 why not? I feel like they also should have made the submission deadline at the end of the summer or fall. This would've allowed everyone a lot more time to gather their shots from the season and put together an edit as well as given TGR more time to spread the word about the contest. That being said, your edit was so sick Nick! and Dales was also fucked

Got mine in there. Mostly re-cut footage from the season, but I'm not gonna say no to a nasty cash purse. I might add though, im getting shit on in the voting category. Perhaps it's the fact its 1/4 the length of everyones and has zero lifestyle.

Are you joking? You think Tom needs to sell 100,000 downloads to break 100k? How much do you think iTunes takes Jesus, no way it can be more than 50%.

And you completely missed the point... I am not saying 100k isn't a lot of money. I am saying however the way it is allocated it is in fact not a lot of money to cover the opportunity cost of entering this competition. An all or nothing purse is stupid, if the 100k like I said was allocated over 5 people, then it would be a lot more enticing to enter....

Why do you think the main event in WSOP pays out so many people, instead of consolidating all the money for one large prize?

This contest isn't a contest. It is a lottery based on how the voting situation is setup and how the prize purse is allocated. Most people don't like gambling, and for people saying "they should enter this contest they have nothing to lose," are retards.

Im on TGR every damn day. i had no idea this contest was running. If its back next year we will submit something just to add to the list of interest to show that there is some interest in contests and that not only should this one continue but there should be more. i work better with a deadline and a goal .

As was previously stated in this thread numerous times, most of us aren't working with film companies, sponsors, or even close to a legit camera to make an edit that is close to winning a 100,000 dollar contest that is supposed to be mostly based on aspects of creativity within both cinematography and skiing.

I have seen dozens, if not hundreds of mind-blowing edits come out of this website. I felt it was valid to ask why, givin the shot at not only the money but the exposure, would the people who produce said videos not enter something. the level of top rated edits on this site are often amazing and that's why I asked a "stupid question".

For me it was, I'm not going to win so what's the point. I was deterred by hearing that pros like Sage were doing it, because I know I wouldn't be able to put something together to compete with him. Also, I didn't know about the top 21 or 12 or whatever it is being in the Colab movie...So now I regret not throwing an edit in and I regret not working harder this season.

a stupid fucking question?? hahaha get out of here dude. The whole point of this contest was to give anyone who was down to put forth the effort, a chance to win. It correlates completely with the media revolution and the fact that there arent there barriers of entry to media production that there once were. A majority of Dale's edit was shot on 7D's, and there are dozens if not more kids on this site with that camera- anyone around the world could have created something with the same tool. We produced Dale's entire edit on money out of our own pockets, we literally had the same budget throughout the winter for this project as some random unknown kid with no sponsors as you state. Mcnutt asked a great question and one that clearly is very interesting as there were astonishingly less than 50 entries.

Wtf is an online distributer? Isn't that what iTunes is? You upload your thing to them, they sell it and distribute it?

I mean I don't know really know how iTunes works, but I really thought they wouldn't take more than 30% of the revenue....

And yes eheath 10k downloads at $10 = 100k. If iTunes takes 30% he would only need 3000 more downloads to get to 100k.

Nick McNutt, I had never heard of you until your shots in 4bi9's Begging For Change. I was immediately like "damn this dudes dirty at 180ing in the BC and has dope style." Since then, I've been consistently amazed by the edits you've been putting out. Your season edit and the edit for this contest were fire. Keep on skiing and living it up man, it's enjoyable just watching the shit you do.

Such a good point. The TGR crew themselves seem to be biased towards backcountry stuff, and because of the huge imbalance of backcountry entires the majority of the vote will be surely be biased towards fellow backcounty skiers.

In my mind Dales edit was clearly the best. The picture quality, music, editing, creativity, and skiiing technicality were all one point. It was also the most diverse entry that I saw in the contest, with the most impressive and creative features. I strongly believe dales edit should win but I dont think it will.

No offense, by why would McNutt vote for Dale in the finals? Frankly, why would any person competing with Dale vote for him ? Clearly the best strategic vote for a contestant would be to vote for an underdog, and not one of the front-runners. For this reason I believe this voting system is unfair and puts alot of faith in the honesty and ethics in the contestants, and might ultimately be the downfall of Dales edit chance of winning the 100K.

That was like what 10k(not sure if it was actually 10k or more) and pretty much every edit in that contest was better then any in this one, and they were short, imagine with a full season and ten times the prize...

Disappointing though still some really enjoyable edits in there, just nothing that is really 100k worthy. Even though i'm pretty much only into big mountain and ski mountaineering I thought Dales was the best.

I read most of this thread (maybe a little tipsy) but not all of it so please excuse me if I'm regurgitating shit.

Honestly, I go on this site almsot every single day and I had no idea the deadline was coming up. I even forgot about the contest until a couple weeks ago! In my opinion, there was not nearly enough marketing. People who say they didn't enter because of the competition are just pussies, seriously, what the fuck do you have to lose? I don't know if I would have entered this year due to knee injuries, BUT, I had completely forgotten the competition after I first read about it anyways.

At this point I have offered my excuse, no need for more. Extremely poor marketing is what I believe to be the cause of this downfall for such a sick and inspiring competition.

X Games was $50k to gold (SammyC) and I'm not sure the rest, but 2nd (Pettit) and 3rd (P.White) got X Games medals and CASH as well. Also, I'm pretty sure the highest public vote snatcher got $10k (Wiley).
There were huge differences in the comps:
-only 8 were invited to X Games Real Ski / vs unlimited in CoLab
-Real Ski had mandatory filming during first 2 months of season only, leaving the rest to film for feature movies
-4 chances for major cash prizes (up to 50% of the field) / vs one massive prize in CoLab

I've already heard that TGR wants to run this comp again next year. I'm sure there will be some adjustments in the format... AND all of you know about it now so there will be much better content, right?? It's up to you.

dale's edit was not some unknown kid with no sponsors. the money coming out of your own pockets was an investment for a movie. not just dale's tgr entry. there's definitely sponsor money coming towards All Damn Day so i'm not sure how valid that claim is. in this scenario, money is collaborated between a fairly large group of people (4bi9 n sponsors) as opposed to some random kid and his/ her group of friends

the filming for these entries definitely should be solid, the skiing needs to be on point, and the access to resources needs to be available


obviously ya dont need top of the line camera gear
but a big majority of newschoolers shredders focus on park skiing. they're not building ridiculous backcountry reverse tranny step-ups or butter boxes


the excuse is that it didnt make sense for most people on this website to enter. the talent isnt there. the edits in that contest are some of the best content to have been released for free this year along with the real snow entries, david lesh's video, various free movies and webisodes such as b an e

even looking at a lot of superunknown finalists there was a bunch of park skiing. those videos dont really make sense in this contest


one last excuse, real pathetic but true, is people are lazy. 100k is a lot of money but a lot of people see that contest and are like fuck... i dont have a shot, why bother
getting organized with a filmer/ filmers, potential snowmobile, potential helicopter, bungee/ winches, people to help build, and passes requires some organization
the skiers most likely to kill it in this contest are talented ams/ pros with connections, much easier for them to produce an entry than young chad

there was also an assumption for a while that wallisch was making an entry (he might as well have) which helped discourage entering

that was a lot of writing. lets brighten the mood

As the tittle sponsor of "All Damn Day" I can assure you we did not put any money towards Dales Co Lab edit. And if any of the other sponsors involved with "All Damn Day" were putting money towards the movie and it was being used for Dales segment it they need to step up their game.

The budget 4bi9 operates on isn't much more than what a couple of kids with decent part time jobs could put together. What they do with what they have is incredible. Just because someone is able to put out astonishing video content does not mean they are cleaning cheeseburger grease off themselves with franklins.

why did you try to argue about something you admitted you knew nothing about? i'll make it real simple for you; not everyone can just hit up itunes and say "hey put my music/movie on here." for the people that can't get directly in through itunes themselves they go through 3rd party distributors that get your music/movie on itunes for you, so at that point you are paying not just one but two fees when you make sales, do you understand now? you make virtually no profit from itunes (even going directly through them) unless you're a huge radio artist.

I hate agreeing with eheath, but i totally agree with eheath. How does 1 million+ viewers generate money for Tom? Its doesn't, if anything it generates money for gopro through google's system of partners, and even then they don't make that much $. The real money comes in getting the gopro brand to more people, and then they pay Tom to an agreed upon level for helping them reach those new people. He wouldn't get 15,000 sales from a personal movie. A gopro movie might, but then who does all the cash go to?

And to your point 1 million youtube views on a single edit = 15,000 sales, how many people do you think are dedicated freeskiers who follow tom out of that million? If you're generous and say 200,000 thats a lot fewer possible sales. And seeing how unwilling people are to spend money on the internet, if you got 1% of them to buy the movie on itunes that would be 2000 sales of 9.99 movies. Itunes keeps half, so really thats 2000 $5 sales, or $10,000 revenue. Not profit. Then Tom would have to go pay his filmers, travel expenses, and post production staff. Which would cost a lot more than $10,000.

And if you aren't going to buy 4bi9's movie because you saw a sneak peak that was fucking rad, you weren't going to buy it in the first place.

I looked online and saw something that said iTunes usually takes only takes 30 cents per song, the record label take like 60 cents and then the remaining 10 goes to the artist.

I just assumed it was not that hard to get your material on their esp if you're Tom and have sponsors like TNF and GoPro and Monster and he would of simply been able to bypass the "record label fee". And yes I realize there is a difference between movies and songs, but was assuming iTunes business model was similar enough to make assumptions.

And lastly to the kid who said "I don't see how Tom getting million views is gonna help him..." Its called advertising, more people who see his trailer is going to increase the amount of possible sales theoretically.
