as you might know, the TGR colab contest is up with a grand prize of $100,000k.
I want to know why there are 42 entries, more than half of which are in my honest opinion, pathetic. (not to be mean, but c'mon...)

$100,000.

seriously.

was it lack of marketing? intimidation knowing the likes of Sage were entering?

what is your excuse, NS, for not submitting something? A LOT of you could have easily made entries substantially better than the bulk of them.

do the math. a lottery ticket is a very long shot compared to this contest

I think TGR messed up BIG TIME in marketing this contest, it should have been WAY bigger, I feel like no one really knew about it

It was also pretty lame to see people include shots in a classic movie trailer style (cutting landings etc.) People should have to go all in on a contest of this stature or atleast should have the respect for the scale of the contest to put their best shots (and landings) in the edit.

i'm guessing it had a lot to do with the fact that they dropped the contest info almost two years ago...not to mention, i would assume many of the higher profile athletes didn't see it as worth the effort, because of how potentially deep the talent pool is(was). they'd rather dedicate a season to putting out a sick film part in their respective crew's movies rather than waste it on a contest and not win (though it may have been a great entry). especially in a sport where career length is limited, and seasons spent putting together quality film parts are even more limited.

it appears to me that the current front runners put in a whole lot more production quality than most people can come up with. I am surprised hood crew didnt try to toss something in tho, they seem to enjoy participating in online contests, and dont seem to give a fuck about what people think about production quality.

I'd say yours was easily in the top 21. you had a bunch of stomps, rad POV angles and decent editing. You just need some more votes. Unfortunately, I can't say that about half of them.

I think most people said "why would I enter? im not going to win" so intimidation for sure. Also, they didn't market it well. I mean, there are some crews who couldve dropped there shots for one skier (like 4bi9 did with dale) but for the average skier, just making a park edit your friends shot on your t2i or gopro isn't exactly the type of edit for this contest. This contest is about producing a movie segment, which honestly 80% of newschooler skiers kids couldn't produce.

Im not sure why more movie companies didnt try this with one skier, it arguable hypes up their movie and its not like they are going to lose sales AND they could win $100k! 4bi9 sent it, seems like a no brainer. Wouldve been cool to seen a stept entry, pbp entry and level 1 entry at least. Oh well.

I'm also assuming music may have deterred a few people. it was a real challenge to find a song I though was alright for what I wanted to put out.

im gunna be honest and say that a major deterrent was the pros. once you find out people like dale are doing it then its just not worth it because a majority of us cannot stand up to skill level so it just seems totally pointless to enter in a contest in which you know you have no chance in winning. plus i doubt anyone wanted to be the kid with the shitty edit that they though was great but wasnt because it was before or after a pros edit and looked bad in comparison

you had to have proper music licensing. they provided everyone with a password on a free music site. so finding a song that diddnt absolutely suck drove most people to the point of not caring anymore after listening to hours and hours of garbage.

tough when there are legitimate production companies in there. no kid with a go pro is gonna beat a team that puts out full length movies every year



also i haven't heard about this contest until today, but then again i don't ever visit TGR

Any "winner take all" video contest which includes all types of skiing is a little too broad I would say? Seems pretty hard to judge different styles of skiers against one another.

Maybe if they had split up the $ into different categories or at least 1st, 2nd, 3rd places, more people would have been into it?

but don't the top 12 make some sort of 'finals', where they all appear in a movie together? sure, seems pretty daunting to compete against Dale, potential pros, Mcnutt...but if you put together a good segment (I think Max Hammer has a sweet segment, but maybe not the strongest skier), you could get in the movie, get some exposure, and hopefully get something from it. Obviously winning 100k would be fanfuckintastic, but TGR seemed to drop the ball on the comp

The competition premise is stupid, the risk does not match the reward at all, if it was like a million dollars then okay it would make sense, but for 100k? Nah...

Here is the reasoning, if you know you have a honestly good shot at winning this competition, aka you're on the forefront of this sport, then you're better off just making your own standalone video project, and keeping the rights for yourself. Otherwise if you get in second place in this competition what do you get out of it? Does TGR pay you for your footage that you gave them? No you just gave it away, when there certainly has a lot of value to it.

That is honestly why Wallisch didn't enter that competition, I bet he can make more than 100k by selling it on iTunes, and even if he comes short it is still guaranteed $. As opposed to all or nothing tournament.

The reason why like X-games video comp's are so big and successful, because it is x-games, those videos get shown on prime-time TV or on websites like ESPN. Sponsors are going to love that and pay their athletes handsomely. As opposed to this competition where outside the skiing community who the fuck knows what TGR even is?

Also your lottery ticket analogy is flawed... Because the risks and costs of buying a single lottery ticket is much much lower than spending an entire season filming, putting yourself in harms way, and then potentially just give away everything you just worked for free.

it was more directed at all the kids putting out "11-12 season edits" on here, rather than into the colab contest. they have nothing to lose.

and yes, TGR has the rights to the footage, but so do you. you can re-use/re-edit the footage you submit as much as you like for any reason you chose.

Yea but once the footage has been seen once, it def loses its value...

I mean I thought there would be more big names entering this competition as well... Even tho the marketing for this competition was poorly handled, the marketing they did do for it made it seem it wasn't even meant for kids who make a top rated season edit to enter. I thought it would be more or less film companies sending their athletes top footage at a chance to win the $, but then I refer back to my first post how it isn't even worth it for them to enter it...

Just like I don't really know who is meant to enter this competition... I think if anything it is aimed at kids who entered super unknown... But even then when you say oh you have a chance to win 100K they feel they have no chance.

They needed to increase the prize money, so that the top film companies would be more enticed to send in submissions, or change it so like the top 10 athletes get paid. So like 50k first, 25k second, and so on and so forth. Then kids would be like well I may not have a chance to beat Sage, but hey I could walk away with like 5 grand...

TGR should hire me.

Its not that your footage loses value, you're some random kid with a bunch of urban shots/pow shots with your homies *cough hoodcrew* you literally have nothing to lose.

Your comparison to tom is pretty off too. Tom is top 5 most popular skiers in the game right now. And no, he will not make $100k on itunes, the real money comes from sponsors, itunes justs makes it easy to distribute. Tom is also an anomaly here, no one else is making a project on their own and just saying that "why enter tgr when you can just make your own project like tom" is extremely flawed. Do you know how much money has gone into a project like that? do you even know how much is put into a movie by pbp or l1p? You cant just "do it".

That being said, again, im very surprised stept, l1p, pbp didnt do a similar thing as 4bi9 and release one persons shots (which arguably doesn't effect the movie at all) for the slim chance at $100k. I bet if clayton or karl or dane or parker or someone else entered, they'd have just as good of a chance as dale does right now, which is pretty high IMO.

im pretty blown away there was only 42 entries. and definitely thought the quality of edits would have been much higher. 100k for first is sweet, but i thought top 12 making the tgr movie was a pretty good prize too.

nick i was looking to enter my edit just to see how it would do but i only had a few days at the end of the season to track down my shots and have time to edit and submit it plus it was my first season in whistler i was there to have fun but if in the future another company wants to do a similar contest i would wanna work for it

i am very disappointed with the quality of most of the edits. Don't know why people think its okay to cut out their landings. after seeing who entered, i am kicking myself for not entering, especially since sage is the only pro and his video is mostly filmed inbounds at Alta. Such a weird way for a contest of this caliber to turn out.

Well first off TGR royally messed up marketing this 'competition', simply no one knew about it. For them to have gotten more than 42 entries they would have had to consistently market it throughout the season to keep athletes thinking about making entries, which they obviously didn't. Second, I think that 'winner take all' is definitely a deterrent, especially as we all assumed the number of professional entries to be higher. I and I'm guessing a lot of people would much rather have seen a 100k prize purse given out over 1st to 5th place.

This. I don't know how the prize money is being distributed so this statement could be way off but I feel like more people will enter a contest if they think have a chance at winning something even when they know they can't get first place. You may not be the best skier on the planet but if you think you are at least good enough to hang with some of the bigger names and have a chance at a top 5 finish you are more likely to enter. But if all the money is given only to the first place finisher why put in the effort when you know even with the best season of your life you are not going to be able to put together a segment that can top the likes of Dale, McNutt, Cohen, etc.

Sure a winner takes all is really appealing marketing slogan but if you are looking for more participation I believe you need to broaden the prize distribution. Then again maybe TGR didn't want a couple hundred or thousand submissions. Perhaps they wanted to keep it exclusive to only the few that had the capability to put out A level parts.

I bet you Tom can make up to 100k off iTunes...

His GoPro youtube videos have attracted over 1 million viewers... I don't think is that far of a stretch that like 15,000 people drop $9.99 on a movie on iTunes after it gets tweets and posts on all his sponsors social media hyping it. Seeing as how GoPro has 5.5 Million followers as is... 15,000 from there is nothing.

And I didn't mean "oh why enter TGR when you can make your own video project..." I meant it more like why would a individual ski company give away its best footage for free when they can keep it for their own. I mean Dale's edit he dropped is prob going to have at least 80% of the shots in his segment in 4bi9's movie. For like idk level1 to pretty much just give away Parker's entire segment, or Tom's if he still filmed with them, I think it would lose hype for the movie, not gain it. You think it doesn't affect the movie at all, but I know for me at least I am now less inclined to purchase 4bi9's movie since I already have seen the segment I was looking most forward to.

I had really big ambitions for this contest and was planning on entering an edit, but due to minor injury and various other things not coming together, like virtually no pow after mid-January, i didn't stack nearly enough footage. I honestly expected a lot more entries, and more with production quality like Dale's/4bi9 and Sage/Adam's. Bummed i couldn't have put something together. Your's was sweet too Nick.

I bet he could get close. Charging $10 might be a little much to ask for a solo video part online but I think it would be pretty interesting to see how many downloads someone like Tom could get out of his solo project.

You're not going to get $10 on Itunes for a 5 minute segment. Now, for a "solo project movie", sure, but that's not what we're talking about. And Heath is right, to make $100k he'd have to sell considerably more than 100,000 downloads.

Also, point above that Tom is an anomaly is a good one. The original "it's not worth it for 100k" comment is yet another example in the long-standing tradition of NS kids having no sense of context or proportion with respect to the dearth of money that actually exists in freeskiing. Just about no one in this industry, including most household names, will see 100k coming to him from someone all at once... well, ever. That is a shit ton of money. When Dale rightly wins, he shall be stoked.

Additionally, the fact that it's such a shit ton of money leads me to agree with the criticism that it should've been separated into 5 prizes to encourage participation. I mean, hell, $50k is still nothing to sneeze at as a grand prize, and if third place was, say, $15k I would expect a lot of people to think "hey, who knows? I could podium this."
