Employers Screening Employees Social Media

I have zero problem with potential employers looking over my facebook page/ entire internet presence. I'm on the first 9 pages of googling my name and I dont' have anything to hide on any website that comes up when you search my name.

Just to clarify, so employers prefer a clean, open privacy facebook? Does having it locked down make the person look bad at all? I don't really have any bad stuff, but I've just always had settings pretty secure so I'm curious if that looks bad.

obviously different professions will have different procedures for this type of thing. If I'm applying for a position that deals with social media they will probably look me up before I come in for an interview.

That is ridiculous. Not everyone has a Facebook so penalizing someone for not being able to find them is absurd. My personal life is my business and if an employer can't uncover anything about it online well too bad.

At social services, we are expected to keep our social media outlets set pretty secure so our clients don't go looking us up. Also, as employees of the government we represent it and are expected to act as such.

My younger brother is a 2nd year apprentice electrician and my former roomate just finished his 4 year ticket and I can verify that camp jobs up on oil rigs in northern BC and Alberta make you anywhere from 80,000-150,000$ before tax depending on your rotations (2 on, 1 off, or 3 on, 2 off etc). Keep in mind that once you make over 90k a year the government takes around 40% of it for income tax in Canada.

Most of the people I ski/sled with work camp jobs as either heavy duty mechanics, electricians or machinery operators and they're pulling HUNDREDS a day. Like $250-600 a day plus all their living expenses are paid while in camp (food, accom, travel etc) plus benefits.

They make a TON of money up north. I know it sounds crazy but its definitely not a stretch by any means. I mean my starting rate for site safety officer was $28 and that was regular time. Factor in 12 hour days 2 weeks on 1 week off and you're into CRAZY double time rates.

There is a ton of money in oil/gas/minerals. They want it out of the ground ASAP and there aren't anywhere near enoughtrades people to fill the jobs which are in high demand and only going to grow. If you're looking to make money, trades people make more than university educated "professionals" with bachelors degrees up here.

So if you're a trades person working full time up north in AB making decent cash you're paying 36-39% income tax (damn close to the 40% I stated)

and if you're in BC you're paying 38-44% income tax, ballpark.

Yay free healthcare.

Not to argue semantics or minor percentages, but fact remains these trades people are making a significant deal of cash, (way more than the numbers people were throwing around for 50k, etc) but we do pay a large portion to taxes in Canada.

These camp/rig jobs are not your traditional/conventional situation. It's nothing like a 9-5 M-F.

well not necessarily, you pay different rates for different portions of the money earned, not 40% for the whole yearly income. But yes, the taxes do suck, but like I said, RRSPs and TFSA contributions and charitable donations will help for the ol' tax return.

Alberta is 10% across the board on top of 29% flat rate federal. = 39%

dunno about that. not if you're a geologist/geotech engineer/geomatics engineer/geophysicist.

Those guys make some serious coin as well,  Trades people also tap out at that income and can achieve it before they are 25 years old but that's about as high as it can get usually,  there are very few that make it into the positions that pay 250k+  range as compared to engineers.

Luckily they won't ask for your NS account.
