Dye Stuff (Bindings, Helmets)

I've got some fresh Look Pivot14s in kiwi green and I really hate that colour (bought it for what the binding is, not colour, hype, w/ever), any idea how to dye them black? and how safe is it, I mean will it affect performance (chemicals attacking the substance or something)?

other thing is my white RED helmet, black as well...

anyone got advice? because just spray the bindings black... wears off & display of din setting becomes invisible lol
and spraying the helmet won't last long either, scratch it a bit and the white is there again...

the toe on the pivots shouldn't be a problem to die since they're composite plastic, im not sure about the heels since they're metal they may take longer to dye. And same thing with helmets. If you chose to use spray you you would want to use spray paint and clear coat to make it last a little longer. Another option would be plasti-dip, you can spray the bindings/helmet and just peel it off around the din window. On top of the plasti dip you could use their glossifier to change the finish.

The heel piece wont die, RIT dye is absorbed into plastic during the dye process. It will just wipe off of metal. The helmet isn't a good idea to dye, because the heat from the dye process could mess up the interior foam or weaken the glue.

Don't dye either. If you want maybe spray the helmet. Spraying the bindings will void the warranty. Not worth it.

ok thx for the help again!

dying it with Rit, will the din window stay clear? just use tape or something over the window and take that off afterwards?

My suggestion is:

1. Buy a new helmet
2. Live with the color of the bindings

You said it yourself, you got the bindings for their performance.

Yup this. You are asking how to dye the two things that most affect your safety. I wouldn't mess with either.

yeah true, two guys above me, still i was wondering wether there are ways... buying a new helmet is of course the best option in case with the helmet, however 100$ isn't something I just throw outta the window when I could dye it for 10$

Or you could sell the helmet and buy a new one

That way you may only be out of pocket the same amount of money as dyeing it but have a safe helmet.

who buys white RED helmets these days lol... tried it so much, no one would ever want to buy it... (agreed, I personally like matte black helmets waaaay better, too)

Personally I think white helmets make stickers look cooler anyway. Black stickers on white.
Plus it's not about color coordination on the mountain. It's how steezy you are in the park.

true about that, but i didn't start this thread to argue about this... i just like my clothing looking good, makes me feel good, makes me ski good... working on a fluid style as much as possible, trust me...

Okay 4 years old helmet and you want make a change, thats understandable.  I thought you were talking about painting brand new gear like your bindings.
You probably shouldn't sell a Helment that old, especially if it has taken a beating.
You should Probably replace a helmet after every three years unless you have taken a hard fall/or its's cracked.

The one which fits your head the best.

It gets said a lot but like boots helmets have to fit well that's the most important thing. Go try a load on and see what fits you. Take you goggles with you and try those with the helmet too. If you try enough you will find a good fit for your head and ine which also works with your goggles.

my biggest problem, stores around here only have RED helmets, no Giro, Smith, Sweet, POC, Bern etc. only RED overandover again and RED does fit but not really as much as I wanted they did...

hard to try on when theres nuthin around :(

Well then yeah you have a big problem. You could try to find an online retailer that will allow you to send stuff back if it does not fit but you may well end up spending a lot in shipping. Maybe try some bike or skate shops and try differnt brands. They won't fit exactly the same as the ski helmets but give you a good idea how they will fit
