We need more trains in this damn country

State of Cali. is funding a multi-billion high speed rail system from downtown LA to downtown San Fran. It'll be the slowest high-speed rail system compared to the cost per mile. Slowest, and most expensive... only in America.

Elon Musk has said he will make a 'hyperloop' system for a tenth of the cost though

still beats Canada's

I can attest to the fact that trains are the most comfortable way to travel. The Netherlands has the most extensive rail-system in the world. The public transport in general is great for that matter.
Luckily, students travel for free, which is great. I take the train everywhere. I (finally) got my driver's license a couple days ago (and I'm 22). I simply never had to get it, because I just took the train everywhere. About 90% of the time taking a train is MUCH faster than going by car.

America does need to get its shit together when it comes to a railroad network, but the vastness of the country doesn't really help...

If america do it properly then HSR will be great, but there are huge factors to consider, one of them being the huge amount of initial infrastructure to set up, and also the fact that the trains would be travelling faster than the human eye/hand reflex can cope with.

i.e Before the train driver even has time to see the truck broken down on the crossing ahead, he has hit it. Boom 1000+ people dead.

So you need to have the infrastructure and safety mechanisms in place for 100s and 100s of miles across rural land. To maintain that amount of track and keep a high safety record you need to spend a lot of money which by all accounts america doesn't have a huge amount of. (Although I propped the economy up with my hard earned $$$ on a little trip to colorado back in February, so you can be thankful for that!) We have the same issue in the UK - to set up a HSR network costs a silly amount of money.

BTW I FUCKING LOVE TRAINS!
