Why are park rails so pussy?

im hoping for a real answer here-- why are the rails in parks so small and short? you go to nice parks and they have no problem having 60 foot jumps open to the public but you can't find a rail that lasts for more than a split second or has more than 2 kinks in 99% of parks

wassa deal?? im always so jealous when i see parks in edits that have quad kinks and shit...that shouldnt be that rare eh?

this is actually a huge factor. This year while I was working park crew the Ski Patrol was always having us scale down on the size of features due to insurance/ liability reasons. Also why would management want a rail that 5% of patrons can hit and is a hazard to everybody else on the mountain

for sure dude, me too. same with watching-- i get way more hyped seeing someone grease a super long and/or technical street rail than do a bunch of switch ups or whatever.

when urban in movies started moving toward throwing tricks on short downs rather than just cleaning harder ones i was bummed..it was a necessary step in urban but meh, not my bag

do not be fooled. easy features are nothing compared to a big long Keystone quad elbow. there is no feeling like greasing that bad boy.

From my experience snowboarders (not all) like shorter rails. So that's my guess, whenever you put out a hard to complete rail everyone says it is a 'skier' rail.

well definitely, but parks have to cater to every ability level. the easiest way to do that is to build features that are safer but more trick-able. greasing a tough rail is an awesome feeling, but how would you feel about a park full of rails where you can only get through them less than 50% of the time? it would get pretty old pretty fast, and make it way harder to progress and learn tricks. not to mention the issue with beginners wrecking themselves.

i see what your saying, but honestly i think parks should just have 1 or 2 truly difficult rails and leave the rest as trick-able things for people to have fun on. if you want gnarly rails, you're gonna have to go hit some urban anyway.

the elbow rail they made out of the tubes was sick, so many possibilities once you were comfortable on it.

My home mountain is Gore, too. Trust me, I am the worst park skier on the mountain. Most of the time, I back out because of the fact that I feel like I could die riding some of the sketchiest rails on the mountain, mainly I hit a few features, mainly some jumps. After reading the title of this thread, I immediately thought of the flat-down that was only in for one day, but turned into a cannon rail in late March.

parks need a balance between challenge rails and trickable rails. So whats park city's excuse? They have such a big budget and stash of rails and yet the rail line was garbage. There wasnt a single challenge rail the whole year and they hardly ever changed the setup (when they did stupid things like the pill to corrugated box and box to stairs were made). If theyre gonna connect stuff, do it with rails. like if that dumb close in feature at the top of the park that you couldnt even hit as an elbow was just a flat down it would get so murdered and it would be like half the work to set up

challenge accepted. titcomb mt is the shittiest hill of ALL time.
700 feet tall
only 8 rails
park crew not allowed to make jumps, have to do it behind ski patrols back.
only 17 trails
only 1 glade.
Not open fridays
but the food is cheap.

we have a 110 degree donkey and i do back side swich ups over the kink. its that counts i have slid a donkey the the angle is still really sketch. any one else with a donkey needs to try this its quite fun

I can't drive though. And I am the only one in my family that skis, so I am constantly hitching rides from people. But once I get a car...I'm getting myself a mount snow pass.

The only actual rail at my park has an almost 2' 6" ft gap on it is super Gnarly.

So basically what your saying is no one at your mountain is learning to ride rails. This is the problem. Too many mountains put nothign but extreme shit up. Same thing with alot of parks and jumps. They will put a whole bunch of 30' booters up, but fucking refuse to put in some beginner jumps. Pisses me off man.

I could not agree more. It was essentialy my first year park skiing and it really discouraged me from learning anything but a box. I ended up having to build my own pvc rail to learn.

Yeah, I lucked out by having at least a small 8foot flat bar at my mountain, but the step up beyond that is retarded. The next easiest rail at my mountain is either a 25 foot flat rail with a 5 foot gap to get onto it or a 15 foot down rail over a staircase thats side entry only. How do either of these seem like an appropriate step up from an 8 foot flat bar? Grinds my gears man.

I think diversity is the way to go. I work in a park, and I am pretty much in charge of jibs. What I try to do is have all the basics down first, such as straight rail/box, down rail/box, Flat Down rail/box. Then I try to get creative and do gaps, transfer stuff, really long stuff. We don't really move things around much in my park after putting it up (no budget) but I always try to be as all round as possible.
