Vail Resorts to operate Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah
I know that people hate on Vail because it is the big corporation of skiing but it's kind of rad to be able to ski so many places on one pass! My thoughts are that Vail is going to try and by a couple more resorts in Utah.
everyone and their moms would ski the cottonwoods on pow days only, and if you think its bad now wait until next year, then if you think its bad then wait until there is a single pass!
plus i bet park city needs some financial help with the whole their lifts on talisker land thing.
Idk, I spend 70% of my days at kirkwood. Kirkwood is probably the last "resort" that should be associated with the whole Vail vibe. I can however tell you not much has changed. Sure early in the season (due to heavenly being shitty at everything) kirkwood is a bit more packed but hell, mid week and non holiday weekends are just as good as they used to be. It's WAY less packed than squaw and alpine.
Honestly good, I've been meaning to ski utah (in my 20's) so this gives me ample reason. Most people that hate on this whole vail purchasing resorts (at least in california) ride at Squaw and Alpine, who are just as guilty (if not more) of producing a shitty vibe with gapers everywhere.
Yes, I do. I have never been a fan of publicly traded ski areas. Investors as a group or concerned only about earnings. Also, concerned with VR owning too many ski areas. I really don't want to see a situation where a megalith company has a monopoly on all the good snow.
As people who like to have the ability to travel, ride and film at multiple places through out the season its sick to only have to purchase one pass. It makes us more inclined to just buy the pass then trying to hit up marketing departments for tickets all the time.
As far as everyone skiing the cottonwoods on pow days I don't see any shortage of good snow to ride. There is so much lift accessible terrain and the amount of back country you can get into with minimal effort is incredible.
I know its sick to have un crowded un touched mountains all to yourself but I've always believed the more accesible skiing and snowboarding is to people the better. Share the stoke.
not hyped on the news. VAIL IS TAKING OVER, and some of you just don't realize that.
Having a multi mountian pass is great in a localized region, where you can ski your home resorts and maybe take a quick trip to another close-by. But the epic pass goes far and beyond a ski pass that most normal skiiers would get the full use out of. (not to mention a 2 times a year user).
Vail started with summit county, expanded to Tahoe, then went overseas to Europe!, and how about the mid-west? (afton alps), let's add shitty little Eldora to it as well!, now how about we get our hands on Utah?
This expansion might sound great to some, but I don't think they get the big picture. This takes away the locals, small-mountain aspect that so many diehard skiiers love and come back to year after year. Unfortunately it's all about money and if you can't beat them, join them.
A lot of Kirkwood affiliates (me included at the beginning) were bitching HARD about the vibe (possibly) changing at Kirkwood. Hasn't changed yet.
Huck, I'm curious to know if anything has changed on your front with Vail Acquiring so many new resorts. I guess I've seen n* become shitty but hell, it's always been a "resort" and not a ski area.
how is it sharing the stoke when people only want to ride a certain place because it has fresh snow and by far the most snow in the small range ?
i would be a fan of a pass in utah that gave you 10 days of your winter at any of the other resorts, but frankly if you have a ski slc pass lets face it alta/bird gets 25 inches pc/dv/can gets 11 with rain at the base, guess where everyone is going with their epic pass.
utah is not colorado as snow doesn't just blanket the state, there is a micro climate in the cottonwoods, snow totals vary drastically. everyone will ski the cottonwoods when it dumps or rains at their mountain if their passes work there.
and if you think there is ample snow to ride for everyone apparently you missed the january - mid february drought (still getting 450") where all alta had was massive gapered out bumps from the brutal raping she got for christmas break then it snowed only 40 inches january 1 until mid feb. thats not the LCC and the LCC doesn't need a pass that also works at the canyons or anywhere else. people ski here and get seasons passes for a reason, and nobody with an alta/bird pass would benefit from having a pass that works at the canyons or hell even brighton. people with a canyons pass that worked at alta would benefit every day of the winter.
'purchasing' = hitting up VR marketing for a handful of trans passes... no? kind of easy to say it'll be awesome when there's a good chance you'll get it for free
Ya I bought an epic pass and its really just for K wood. I'll do 2 hours at Nstar when its convenient if I am in Reno and wake up late or going to Sac/the Bay but I bought Vails pass only for that one mountain. Didn't ski heavenly once.
I knew I was going to have to drive through Colorado late January so paid extra for the full epic. Vail really sucked even though there was powder it was too flat (but I used Verbier so its all good) so I wasn't planning on buying the full epic again.
But if Canyons and Park City are on the pass I will probably buy the full epic every season not Tahoe Value.
That's why I fucks with mountains like Loveland, Taos, etc. Mom and pop, janky ass chairs, rad terrain, snow(ish) and nobody there all day erry day. Aiiiight.
At least it gives me more of an excuse to head out to Utah next year. I do think it would be kind of disappointing to see resorts in the cottonwoods be bought out by vail though.
Canyons was already previously owned by Talisker, Who also blow royal dicks. But I don't really care. Probably more rich assholes to deal with in this town. Glad I'm getting cottonhood passes next year. Getting my pow stashes ruined by little fucking racer and freeski team kids is getting old real quick.
I dont know if its a good thing or a bad thing but Vail is taking over almost everything, they just bought the hill in minnesota afton alps, and a family owned ski shop in minnesota.
what he said, Park City Mountain Resort was recently purchased by Powder Resorts LLC (they own Copper and Boreal) and there has been talk of a woodward PC so yeah PC is staying where they are at. I view this as an oh shit moment for talisker, they got in over their heads with their land investment and realized they know very little about mountian operation so now they are calling some pros todo some clean up work.
No fucking way man. The negatives far outweigh being able to ski a few extra places. Vail resorts has practically fucking ruined Northstar and Heavenly. They fucking suck, and all the yellow jackets are total douches as well.
I thought Kirkwood was fine this year under Vail. Vail ownership might mean the couple new lifts they definitely need to put in actually happen.
Heavenly is only for when you are in SLT and are too lazy to drive to Kwood, I didn't ski it once this year. N* had that annoying village to walk through well before Vail showed up. Neither mountain is awful I am glad they are on my pass.
I saw in the email today from Epic Pass that its not only 5 days this year at Verbier but you also get 5 more in Aarlborg. PRetty fuckin sick they toss in a 10 day Europe pass.
I was thinkin of dropping to Tahoe Value or Local but not anymore I will get the full thing again now. I like Utah.
Vail Resorts are awesome hope they buy somewhere in the San Juans and some New England mountains soon.

Talisker is also the company that wants ski link to service only their rich homeowners, tried to bankrupt Park City/ evict them multiple times and they're completely fine with building mcmansions and gated communities all over the fucking mountain.
The Canyons hasn't been "local" for a long-ass time.
It's not significant at all except for the fact that you can now ski at the Canyons with an epic pass. You're a fucking moron. "Ohhh they're going to ruin the local vibe broo! They're going to put all the mom and pop shops outta business"

Vail owns Keystone and Brek which the majority of Ns'ers seem to think are THE greatest ski areas of all time.
The point is the terrain is the limiting factor with regards to sorting out kooks and shredders. Not many bay area gapers liked kirkwood because it's too steep. If you're worried about some big corporation changing the vibe because of tourists and subsequently them taking all your pow spots perhaps you should start skiing steeper stuff.
That's like me telling you that I'm pissed half moon bay is growing because more people will be at Mav's when a big swell comes.

Steep places that scare those people away seem to have a demographic I don't really care much for when you are off the mountain and having a drink. Basically the good places in general that aren't catered towards gapers and have good reputation for tough terrain are crawling with crusty lonely ass desperate as fuck 40 year old dudes all skiing with backpacks who are all about finding their "pow" etc etc.
Forgive me if I am not 100% digging that hardcore "vibe." I put up with it for good terrain of course but I'd rather have a party atmosphere off the slopes.

Its just becomming more and more of a feat to run a ski resort nowadays. All that stuff that old timers rant and rave about from "back in day" were times where it was just simply a bit easier to run a good ski resort like that especially with good snow years. Its hard to keep good help and turnover is already high in a hospitality-backed industry like that and it really rubs off onto others. Not that people are rude there but its just a lot more stress to run an operation when you know for a fact you're going to lose at least half of your staff members throughout the season. Just at least from what I witnessed when I was working there for a little bit.
They lose a lot of their mountain staff by april which explains the closures of Gad Valley in the spring and costs money to keep those lifts running. Its just the way it is nowadays, and especially with changes in management there will be effects you'll see here and there. But you just push that shit aside and focus in on how fun it is to ski that canyon. Its busier and busier each sesaon but theres a reason for that.
It'll be really interesting to see what Alterra ends up doing with Deer Valley. If they change the script entirely and make it more akin to something like PCMR or keep it like its still a sorta Yellowstone Club-esque playground for the extremely wealthy. Bob Wheaton stepping down sorta raises a red flag for me, it looks like they are wanting to bring in more Alterra people or he just simply wanted to retire.

What pass did you have? Was it Chair-only? They're usually pretty damn cool with letting it slide at the end of the season. One of the bigger upsides to the chair only pass. You can get some free extra insurance laps off the Tram and just lap little cloud or Mineral Basin when it gets warm and soupy.
Its usually pretty kino for mid-season too. I prefer to take chairs and bank some fun lil laps on my way to the the fun stuff. I was kinda butthurt tiger tail wasn't in good shape this season. It was insanely fun the season before.
Yeah it was chair only, and it was a weekend day so there was a line for the tram and there were about 6 of us who heard they were letting people on the tram so ski patrol had to get a verdict from management and they said we couldn't ride it up even once. And yeah, tigertail is my favorite area too, last year was ridiculous but low snowpack made it a minefield so I spent most of my season on peruvian. Did get my first tracks on a storm day at pearly gates though. Theres really no point in riding the tram on weekends anyway and since I work 35 hrs a week and take 3 classes, chair only is the way to go for me. Next year if theres a good powder day I think I'm going to go with a few friends, build a jump and learn backflips since it's one of my goals for next season.
