How do you add this effect to photos?

One of my friends with an iphone always took pics with his phone that had that really crisp look just like the pic below. Anyone know if it's just an app he used? He's out of the country right now, otherwise I'd just ask him

Take a nice picture, and actually adjust the photo. Don't just add a photo filter... pussy.
